Reading ebooks on #Apple toys, iPod, iPad, etc

So Apple has gone and screwed things for etailers, and if you aren’t aware of how things are running, you might think you can’t buy ebooks for your iPod or iPad unless you use iBooks.  Personally, I hate the iBooks app, anyway.  They also aren’t letting the app stores tell you why the buy links suddenly disappeared.  I’m not an app store.  You’re not an app store. So we can tell each other and spread the word, right?

Apple has forced the apps like Kobo, BN, Kindle, etc to change things and remove all buy links from the apps.  No more in app purchases.  This is an Apple thing and the etailers had no choice.

But don’t worry.  You can still buy your books outside of the iBooks, which is cool if you hate the iBooks app like I do…and if you hate having a mega-giant try to control how you buy things (like I do).  And you also have tech-savvy people at Dear Author who will tell you how.  Info can be found here!

So how the heck do you get books onto the app itself?  This procedure is called sideloading and it’s fairly easy… (read on for more)

  1. That’s because Apple just doesn’t have enough money even though they have more cash reserve at the moment than the US government $80 Billion. They make me sick with the greed.

  2. I don’t do Apple anything. My hubby does, because of work and they give him toys to play with. He currently had an iPad & iPhone but, he’s not a big reader so probably doesn’t even know about this. Thanks for the info, I’m sure he’s gotten calls from customers thinking it’s a problem with the VZW network and not Apple directly. I have the Samsung Galaxy Tablet for ebooks. Love it because I can read my PDF files, Nook books, Kindle books & Kobo books, it’s an all in one. 😀

  3. The more crap like this Apple pulls, the happier I am I went with the Samsung tablet. I’ve got an iPhone, but I may switch to an Android phone when I upgrade. I don’t read ebooks on my phone, I use the tablet for that anyway, but the way they are trying to control the market just irritates the snot out of me. They expect other etailers to either LOSE money or people to buy their books from them… no thanks.

A lot of people aren’t aware of why this happened. It’s just good people on blogs like DA and sites like Galley Cat are so good at spreading the word.

  4. I am so tired of Apple being so manipulative. They have messed with the ebook market and prices, they have tried to control apps, and now they are trying to control the software/applications their customers use to buy and download things. Didn’t microsoft get a class action lawsuit for installing microsoft programs on every windows pc filed under market control? Steve Jobs is a very greedy man. I have a kindle, an iPod touch, a PC, and an iPad that I use to read ebooks- they will not be getting me to use their inferior iBooks app just by taking the catalogues out of the better ereader apps.

  5. I’m debating when it’s time for me to upgrade to a new phone to going to a droid based phone for this reason. I love my iPhone and it’s easy to use. But, I hear great things about droid and I’m no stranger to tech…we’ll see. I still have 6 months…

  6. As far as phones. I’ve never used an iPhone. I have a Droid X and absolutely love it. I can do everything on it that I can do on my Tablet and netbook. I post to my blog, facebook, check news, all from the phone. My hubby has Droids & an iPhone and uses his Droid as his primary phone.

  7. So that’s why Kindle and B&N and others had to update their apps and remove the buy links from their apps. Geez. I don’t like that. I hate when companies try to make me buy things their way. I don’t even use the iBooks app.
