The first contender for the 2019 Douchery Award

So, it’s been a crazy few weeks in Romancelandia.

For those who remember #HaleNo, the author who stalked a reviewer a few years back…well, she’s sold a book about the experience like it was a fun little lark.  Tee-hee!

Some other crap-shit about how it’s unbelievable that a courtesan could marry into nobility and have a HEA, but hey…the endless waifs finding their way into nobility are never questioned, a million and one playboy princes sneaking of into the contemporary world and nobody recognizes them…???

There’s been other crap, but I gotta tell you, I think the biggest contender for the 2019 Douchery Awards has already made his presence known, and it’s not an author (thank goodness).

May I present Jimmy Thomas?

Jimmy is a fitness guy…and he also runs Romance Novel Center.  He models for romance cover photo shoots and sells them.

And he hates on fat people. Like…seriously. Here’s a peek at his latest rant over on Facebook..

Yes, disgusting how lazy Americans are! How little self-control, discipline, and care for their health they have. Especially when I see fat kids… That is “child abuse” and it really irritates me😤
———
And so tired of seeing posts or write-ups about how “big is beautiful”, telling other obese/severely overweight people that they should just love themselves as they are…
———
NO THEY SHOULDN’T! Stop encouraging them to be lazy, and unhealthy!
———
– Don’t act like you don’t fly on a plane because you’d rather drive… You hate trying to force-squeeze yourself into the seat and embarrassed that you can’t even buckle the seat belt as it won’t reach.
– Same for why you don’t go to the movie theater…
– Or on amusement park rides.
– You hate not being able to be on your feet for that long due from the pain of all that weight your feet, ankles and knees have to hold up.
– Having only stretchy wasted pants and XXXL t-shirts for the majority of your wardrobe.

~*~

There’s more, but…you get the point. Jimmy clearly likes to talk and people who like to talk usually like attention. Let’s give it to him. I have a rebuttal.

Jimmy says:

And so tired of seeing posts or write-ups about how “big is beautiful”, telling other obese/severely overweight people that they should just love themselves as they are…    NO THEY SHOULDN’T! Stop encouraging them to be lazy, and unhealthy!

Shiloh says:

Oh, so sorry, Jimmy, but you’re wrong! The ‘Big is Beautiful’ write-ups come from the Body Positive movement, which was created so women who don’t fit the ‘Hollywood’ version of beautiful could actually start feeling something other than shame and hate for their bodies, WHILE STILL seeking health.  It’s the ‘healthy at any size’ thing.  Logically, as a nurse, I know a person won’t be healthy at 500lbs, but that’s beyond morbidly obese and not really the standard.

You’re clearly not reading much into these articles, either, because they aren’t about encouraging big women (or men) to be lazy.

Here, I’ll help you.

But Shiloh says…  honey, I fly. I love the movies. Amusement park rides… eh, I’ve ridden more than enough, but that’s neither here nor there.  Some fat people fly. Some fat people don’t. Now, your ugly attitude does play into it, but it’s not so much embarrassment…it’s the way you look at us. Me, I’ll just settle my chubby self in and enjoy the ride. But not everybody is as obstinate as I am. But some people don’t fly for other reasons…it’s expensive. It’s annoying. If I can get some place by driving six or eight hours, I’ll do it, because I have my car and I don’t have to show up early to the airport for the flight out and back, plus I’m not paying out the wazoo for luggage. There are so, so, so many reasons why people don’t fly.

As for those stretchy-waisted pants, have you noticed the growing trend among women in general, of all sizes, who just love yoga pants?  It’s because they are comfortable. Staggering.

You really don’t know much about the people you’re insulting, do you?  You think all we do is sit around and munch on chips?

Boy howdy, can I educate you?

Widespread misconceptions about obesity

  • The most recent data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey, a study of a nationally representative sample that used accelerometers to measure physical activity, suggest otherwise. Based on objective measures, only 7% of Canadian children and youthand 15% of Canadian adults meet physical activity guidelines. When split by body mass index categories, obese girls average 11 159 steps per day, while normal-weight girls average 10 224 steps per day. Obese boys average fewer steps (10 256 steps per day) than their normal-weight counterparts (12 584 steps per day), but they have a larger body to carry. Translating this physical activity level into calories expended (kcal per day) would likely show that obese boys actually burn more calories on a daily basis.

Jimmy says….All of those who say they love their large body, in a MILLISECOND would say yes to being able to snap their fingers to be in great shape!

Shiloh says… well, I don’t know about that.  If being in great shape means being a douche like you?  I’ll stay as I am, thanks!

———
Jimmy says…. Unmotivated people need HARD CORE, IN YOUR FACE reminders like this post of how unhealthy they are at their size, and NOT “so called” friends not saying a word to them about it, afraid they will hurt their feelings!… F THAT!… So this is merely one of those wake-up calls….

But Shiloh, and SCIENCE say… JIMMY IS WRONG… Fat-shaming, like Jimmy apparently likes to do makes the bullied person more prone to gaining weight.

Shape your life | Fat-shaming doesn’t help

I mean, really, Jimmy… if a heavy girl like (I’m a size 20) was at all concerned with what douches like you think (and I’m not) goes to the gym and suspects people like you are watching with judgement (and they do), how likely am I to go back?

Fortunately for me, I’m not concerned about them, because their judgement says more about them (as yours says about you) than it does about me. I go to the gym. I use the elliptical. I spin. I lift weights. I do yoga.

But judgmental asses like you are why so many obese people AVOID the gym. The judgment hurts.

So, maybe think about that the next time you’re considering an IN YOUR FACE comment. You’re just making the problem worse. True facts.  Science backs it up.

———

Jimmy says… “Do you think I enjoy going to the gym? Hell no! I did the first 15-20 years working out. But when you have been doing it for almost 34 years, it is DRAINING, time-consuming & HARD WORK! Especially at my level, where I push harder and further than most do or can, as it is now innate to me and I don’t feel the OMG/WTF feeling of exertion until I stop my last rep, where then I am dying out of breath, about to fall over/pass-out.”

—-

But Shiloh says…  Oh, poor baby. Here I am thinking you enjoy gazing at your manly muscles. You don’t???

Awww…oh, well.

Anyway, when you go to the gym, you can work out in peace and not have muscle-bound meatheads like yourself watching you from the corner of your eye, judging you, or girls snickering at you, staring at you.

And when you got home, feeling a little proud of yourself, did you sit down and get online and see vitriol about how lazy you are?  Lazy!  I mean, you work a full-time job, you’ve got kids, you’re married, you’re moving from before the sun rises and crash well after it sets, getting by on far less than recommended amount of sleep… (Oh!  Another factor in obesity, not enough sleep!)

Did you know people who sleep less are more prone to obesity? And if you’re working two jobs, often required for lower income families… you don’t have as much chance to sleep!

WebMd | Poor sleep and weight gain

I see you like the CDC (BTW, did you look up contributing factors to obesity in young girls? Like socio-economic factors? Genetics? Environment? THE MORE YOU KNOW!!!)

  • Overall, men and women with college degrees had lower obesity prevalence compared with those with less education.
  • By race/ethnicity, the same obesity and education pattern was seen among non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, and Hispanic women, and also among non-Hispanic white men, although the differences were not all statistically significant. Although the difference was not statistically significant among non-Hispanic black men, obesity prevalence increased with educational attainment. Among non-Hispanic Asian women and men and Hispanic men there were no differences in obesity prevalence by education level.
  • Among men, obesity prevalence was lower in the lowest and highest income groups compared with the middle income group. This pattern was seen among non-Hispanic white and Hispanic men. Obesity prevalence was higher in the highest income group than in the lowest income group among non-Hispanic black men.
  • Among women, obesity prevalence was lower in the highest income group than in the middle and lowest income groups. This pattern was observed among non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic Asian, and Hispanic women. Among non-Hispanic black women, there was no difference in obesity prevalence by income.

CDC Obesity

IT LOOKS LIKE LESS-PRIVELEGED PEOPLE HAVE MORE ISSUES WITH OBESITY!!!! IMAGINE!!!

If you live in an unsafe neighborhood, you’re less likely to exercise!

If you’re on a cramped budget?  Processed and unhealthy food!!!

Less educated?  You don’t know the importance of a healthy diet!!! WOW!!!

Have family members who are obese??? MORE likely to happen to you!!!

———
Jimmy says… So save your hate comments for when you are talking to yourself about your own obesity!

Shiloh says

It’s already been determined that fat-shaming and fat-hating don’t work and actually make people want to eat their feelings, so, Jimmy, darling, honey… assholes like you make the problem don’t help. They hurt.

Go eat a cookie.  Maybe you’ll feel better.

  1. I think his attitude is disgusting but even more so than today the post on Instagram and Facebook are gone. Now it seems like a big publicity stunt.

Whatever it was I hope it ends his career. I’m an author but don’t write romance – still though I’ve seen the massive number of authors scrambling to get him off their covers and many generous cover designers offering to help them.

Rule 1: Don’t bite the hand that feeds you!

  2. Ugh. What an asshole. Just what did he expect to accomplish with that load of shit?

  3. Yes! Thank you for this well-thought out, informative and compassionate post, Shiloh! I couldn’t believe his post when I saw it.

  4. I came to your blog after reading what Maren Smith had written. Thank you for correcting his spelling on his wasted pants comment. It always amazes me that the more vitriolic the message, the stupider the messenger. The sad truth is there are scads of people who probably read his comments and thought he was correct and nodded their heads as they mouthed the words to themselves. That being said, there are more of us who are well read and very informed as to the issues that contribute to being overweight.

Thank you so much for your great article. I’m a great believer in Karma. So. Hope his enjoyed his fifteen minutes because times up.

    Laura

  5. Jimmy certainly qualifies for the Douche Award of the year! I loved the way your rebuttal to his hateful remarks were spot on, you have such a wonderful sense of humor!

  6. Oof… I’m a bit behind. Hadn’t checked for comments here… sorry, guys, but thank you.

I hate the harm his ignorance causes. Hopefully, he’ll fade into obscurity. I know many authors have reached out to their pubs and cover artists about NOT using him anymore.
