The Descent

I can’t decide if I liked this movie or not.

FYI, spoilers coming so if you want to see it and don’t like spoilers, come back and talk after you watched it.

The main characters, Sarah and Juno, are big into adventure stuff.  Great friends, they do the white water rafting, caving things, if there’s no risk, there’s no point.  That seems to be their motto.  Then Sarah suffers a major loss.  In a freak accident her husband and little girl are killed.  I really hated that part.  Car accident, nothing to do with the scary stuff, although that scene in itself is pretty gory.

Year goes by and Juno tries to get Sarah back into things.  She’s feeling really guilty and I already figured out why in the opening scene.  She was getting it on with her friend’s hubby.  Bad bad girl… BIg group of friends get together and they go to this cave, and unknown to all but Juno, is completely unexplored.  They get stuck when there is a collapse in the one tunnel that leads back to the entrance cavern.  Monsters lurking in the shadows, people die, two or three or four might make it out, but things start happening.  Somehow Sarah learns about what Juno was doing with her husband back before he was killed.  She has the chance to get out, so does Juno and this is where I started to really not like it.  Up until this point, I was doing okay.

BUT…Sarah basically feeds Juno to the monsters.  Literally.  Now don’t get me wrong.  I love my husband and I’d hurt anybody that ever tried to mess around with him.  But I wouldn’t feed anybody to some monster lurking in the dark and she did it in a most gruesome way.  Yeah, bad things beget bad things and if Juno hadn’t been screwing with her friend’s hubby, wouldn’t have happened.  But I don’t by into the one bad turn deserves another.  If that’s the way the world worked, there would be nothing good in it.  And isn’t that a depressing way to look at it?  I guess that’s why I like romance.  Always a happy ending.

This movie?  Nope.  No happy ending. Ends with Sarah hallucinating, or dreaming, about her little girl in the cave with her.  Happy.  Maybe that was the happy ending for her, but seeing as how she basically murdered somebody… oye.

Nope.  That settles it. I didn’t like it.  I like scary movies, love them, but I like it when they end with the note that good triumphs over evil.
