BOMC for August/September

Kindle

nplay.jpg

I’m late!  Ack!  Sorry!  August has been a hellacious month, teething baby, deadline for a proposal, not to mention the three, yes three, novellas/short stories I’ve written since the start of the killer 70 Days of Sweat.  I’m also more than half way done with the current WIP, titled The Missing and I’ve done edits on One of the Guys and For the Love of Jazz, both due out this fall.

So yes, I slacked on the BOMC, I admit it.

BUT!  I have done some reading.  I read Ann Christopher’s Trouble and liked it.  I reread Nora Robert’s Rebellion (uhhhhhmmmmmm… the MacGregors….I’ll admit that a certain juvenile part of me wants to have a tantrum that we won’t see any more of Daniel or the rest of the clan…sniffle) and I’m working on Moongazer by Marianne Mancusi~working because the idea interests me but I hate first person.  Normally, I’d toss it back to the TBR pile or the giveaway pile but the idea is pulling me so I am going to work past my hate of first person and read it.

But I have read something that I absolutely loved and it’s going to be my BOMC….Night Play, by Sherrilyn Kenyon.  The readers over at the BDB yahoo group mentioned this one and after I saw it multiple times, I had to get it and oh, man am i glad I did. Vane and Bride…. ummmmmmm…. wonderful book there.  loved loved loved it.

It was mentioned after a couple of the group members asked for suggestions for books with plus sized heroines.  Now I am plus-sized, but I didn’t pick it up because of that, and I didn’t pick it up at all until several people started raving about it.

Plus sized doesn’t matter to me.  Just liking the heroine is all I care about and way too many books with plus sized heroines seem to feature the heroine as just about hating herself because of her weight.  How can I like her if she doesn’t like herself?  More, how can I like a book if it makes me feel that much more self conscious about my own weight?

Night Play did none of that.  Yes, the heroine wished she weighed less, but she didn’t dwell on it too much.  Some, yes.  But not too much.  And the hero loved her.

He didn’t have a fat fetish and that’s another one of my pet peeves about romance books with plus sized heroines.  Comments like he loved her big, jiggly ass do not strike me as erotic, romantic or hot.  I see those in a book and I throw it.  Literally.  And I probably won’t ever buy the author again.  Yeah, I have a big butt and the DH incidentally does like it, but if he called it a big, jiggly ass, I’d smack him.  So I don’t want to read that kind of line either.

I was a little leery of reading the book just because it did have a plus sized heroine and too many books with plus sized heroines hit my pet peeves.  Not this one.

Vane was romantic, he loved her as she was and saw her as perfect.  Bride accepted herself and came to see that Vane loved her without pulling any stupid crap that also makes me want to hurl a book.

This was just, plain and simply, a very good, very hot, very sweet romance.  I enjoyed it so much that I went out and bought Valerius and Tabitha’s story, although I haven’t read it yet.  I also want Fang and Fury’s stories.

While I’m not haunting her website and looking for bits and morsels of the next books, and while I haven’t bought every book on her backlist, I can definitely say I am loving what I’ve read so far from SK.

Since it’s so late in the month, Night Play is going to go thru August and September as the BOMC. This is a contest which means there is a prize and the prize is Night Play.  If you’ve already read it, join in anyway and if you win, you and me will work something out.

As always, the way to win the book is join in on the discussion.  FYI, I count DISCUSSION as something like, Hey, I read that book and I loved this about it or that…  or a comment like,  I don’t normally read her because….    You can offer suggestions for me or other bloggers, books you’ve read and loved, etc etc.  But I’d love to win this isn’t really discussing. It’s sort of boring and I do hate being bored.  ;o)

You can comment as many times as you like, but I draw the name by ISP so you will only be entered once, and it’s YOUR responsiblity to check back at the end of September to see if you win.  Reading my blog regularly greatly increases your chances of seeing your name… but that isn’t why I do it that way.  I’ve got too much to do to track down winners and after I’d wasted a week trying get ahold of one, I decided now the winners have to contact me.

Soooooo…. who has read it?  Who has loved it?  Got any recs for me?

July's BOMC

Kindle

And the winner is Angie… who commented

you know, I wondered if someone would yell at me about only reading the first two. I remember both May and Charli telling me to make sure I had book three on hand before I finished book two. And I did. But I wasn’t ready to move on. And part of that really is because I read much more with my ereader than I do a paperback.

Angie, you know my email.  :O)  Email soon or I’ll give your prize to somebody else.

Kindle

And honestly, Jaynie, it isn’t rigged.  ;o)  Since you are her boss, maybe you can make her give you the prize.

The winner is Erin…the not so innocent.

Ooooh this one is actually in my TBR pile! I must dig to find it *s*

She has a couple of free books on baen.com. I love her story Sympathy for the Devil! I must hunt down more of the books in this series now that I reminded myself of it. (the Sympathy for the Devil series I mean)

July's BOMContest …. Stardoc

Kindle

stardoc.jpg

I actually did some serious reading this month.  Well, for me….

In June, I read like five books…okay, actually, I read all of those this past week.  All the books were good, but none were blow my socks great so instead of using one of them for the BOMContest, I’m doing an old fave.

Anybody that knows much about my reading preferences know that I have a couple of authors that I adore.  I’d almost even go fangirl on them.  And I don’t do fangirl.

SL Viehl is one of the few authors that could push me to go fangirl.  The first book of hers that I read was Stardoc.  Now this is sci fi, but before all of you romance readers pull back and shudder, relax.  There’s romance in the book.

Very well done romance.

This is a series, too, so instead of falling in love with a couple and then never seeing them after the HEA, you get to spend a lot of time with them.  Almost Roarke and Eve-ish.  But the hero in this is even scarier than Roarke.  Duncan Reever.

If I had to go into a dark alley that was lined with thugs, rapists, murderers and politicians, I’d pick Duncan Reever over Roarke.  So come on, you romance junkies, if you haven’t given the Stardoc series a chance, you need to.

The heroine Cherijo is hhmmmm… I don’t want to use the word fiesty.  I don’t really like it. Cherijo is unique.  She’s stubborn, she’s smart, she’s strong, she’s funny.

The world building is phenomenal.

The stories will pull at your heartstrings, it will make you laugh, it will make you want to beat SL Viehl over the head for the things she does to her characters ,  it will have you panting and salivating for the next one in the series, just because you have to know how she’s going to get these people out of that mess.

As always, the way to win the book is join in on the discussion.  FYI, I count DISCUSSION as something like, Hey, I read that book and I loved this about it or that…  or a comment like,  I don’t normally read sci fi because….    You can offer suggestions for me or other bloggers, books you’ve read and loved, etc etc.  But I’d love to win this isn’t really discussing.

If you’ve already read Stardoc but you have something to contribute, fire away.  We can work out another prize.  Winner will be drawn at the end of July.

And we have a winner…

Kindle

As always, if the winner doesn’t check back and email me within…oh, lets say by Wednesday, I reserve the right to draw another name.

The winner of the ‘interesting promo’ contest is Zara who said…

How about the little plastic coffins that have candy in them, with a card attached with your website information, etc.

by Zara June 23rd, 2007 at 7:02 pm

With all the vampish stuff I do, this could be kind of cute and it was a little different from some of the other suggestions tossed out.

So Zara, email me at shilohwalker@gmail.com and put BLOG CONTEST in the subject line.

Vaya con Dios…and a sort of weird contest

Kindle

**This Contest is Now Closed-June30**

Things about to start getting crazy around here so I won’t be around much or responding to comments, either.  Tomorrow, we leave for Cincinatti for a few days.

Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday, I’m covering at the doctor’s office again.  Thursday, we leave for Atlanta for two days, and then on Gulf Shores, Alabama for a week.  To make sure people don’t forget about me and my little blog, I have some posts written ahead of time and a few guest bloggers so even though I’m not here, the blog isn’t going to fade away while I’m MIA the next week or two.

Before I say adios for a few days, I’m going to do a little contest.  Enter only ONCE… I do check ISPs when I’m going thru the entries so double entries won’t do any good.  Contest is open to all, regardless of where you live.

And what is the contest for?  Welll…. probably a book.  Definitely some promo goodies that a friend picked up for me in Texas at RT a few weeks back.  Some of them are the standard things, little pens, notebooks with the author’s info on them.  There’s one of the stress thingies in the shape of a heart.  There were some mardi gras beads which my daughter took.  A car which my son took.  And pens… lots and lots of pens.

Pens are a pretty standard promo thing.  Everybody uses them.  Everybody loses them.  We always need more pens.  The notebooks can be handy if you’re a notebook user.  The mardi gras beads entertained my baby until I took them away from her and she threw a bloody fit.

I’m always trying to think of a clever, inexpensive promo item, but I can’t think of too many things that haven’t already been done.

Soooooo…. why don’t you all do the thinking for me?  Toss out your most outlandish, or sensible ideas, and I’ll draw a name from the commenters and the winner will get…. you guessed it… some of these promo items that a friend swiped for me.

Enter only once!  As always, the winner’s name will be posted here and it’s your responsibility to check back and see if it’s you.  If I don’t hear from you within a few days, your prize gets regiven.  I’ll draw a winner sometime next week before I leave for vacation.

Don't forget….

Kindle

This month’s BOMContest… it’s for Holly Lisle’s I See You.

Don’t forget I’m looking for guest bloggers.  I’ve got a couple, but I would like a few more.  Whether you have your own blog or not, you’re welcome to send me a blog post you’d like me to consider.  It’s open for authors & readers alike, so if you have something on your mind, email it to me and we’ll talk about it.  You can a few more details here.

Busy couple of weeks coming up.  Starting tomorrow, I’m helping out at the old day job while somebody is on vacation for a few weeks.  And it’s possible I’ll be filling in more later this summer.  One of the nurses just found out she has cervical cancer which means surgery.  This lady has got some of the worst luck in the history of the world.  Whoever coined the phrase whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger must have been thinking of this friend of mine, because she just keeps getting more and more thrown at her.  If you’re the praying type, she could definitely use the prayers and positive thoughts.  Whatever they decide to do, she’s going to be out of work for a little while so it’s possible I’ll be filling in for her.

After I’m done covering for the nurse on vacation, I’m on vacation.  We’re going to be at the beach the second week of June so I won’t be around much.  (Hence the need for guestbloggers).

On June 2, I’ll be signing books at the Lori Foster Reader and Author Get Together.  The book fair is open to the public and the details are below.  If you live in the Cincinatti area, I’d love to meet you.

This is at the Marriott North in Cincinatti~Book signing hosted by Barnes and Noble at the hotel.

Book fair from 4-6 on Saturday June 2.

Cincinnati Marriott North
(Just north of Cincinnati on I-75 at Union Center Blvd, exit 19)
West Chester, Ohio
6189 Mulhauser Rd
West Chester, OH 45069-4842

This and That

Kindle

Yep, I forgot to get my TT done yesterday.  Sorry!

I’ll try to get back to it next week.

Been busy with the monster’s field trip yesterday and today?  Today I was…playing.  We’ll call it playing.  Yeah, that’s it.  The DH is out fishing with the monster now and the bratlet is spending the night at a friend, so it’s just me and the baby bratlet and I’m finally finished with what I’ve been messing with all day.

Just a few reminders about things, and events….

Looking for Guest Bloggers… if you’re interested in helping me out while I’m filling in at the old day job and on vacation after that…go here.

If you want to read about May’s BOMContest…go here.

I’m going to be signing in Cincinatti in a few weeks and if you want details on that…go here .

And if you need a laugh… go here… found courtesy of Karen, who found it via Monica…who found at Mrs. Giggles…

May seems to be the month for blog dramas.  Yikes.  My head is spinning from what little I’ve let myself look out.  And I suspect there is more drama I’m missing, but if I want to get any work done, I’m not going to go investigate.

Now I’m going to sign off here and go eat… I haven’t eaten much except a sad, very sad bowl of something that resembled chili~went to eat with the bratlet at school and i should have brown bagged it.  Or signed her out for lunch.  Or something.

well hell… Mrs. G’s link was wrong… sorry, folks… and uh.. ewww! link now fixed.  that will teach me to think i know the link.  Copy and paste always from now on…

New release

Kindle

Taking the lazy way out today.  I need to hit get some serious work done on several WIPs and since today is a release day at EC, I’m using that to get out of a serious, insightful (choke, choke) well thought out blog post.  ;o)   See…I can do humor…

There’s an excerpt up at the AM blog here.  This is straight contemp, no shifters, no psychics, no vamps, which I don’t do much anymore. It was a nice change for me…hopefully for you as well!

And now I’m going to grab something to eat, finish my email and do a quick blog run before I get to work.  Later~

Oops!  Edited to add… don’t forget the BOMContest… May’s book is I See You by Holly Lisle.  Click the BOMC category in the sidebar to read up about the book and the contest.
