\u201cHow considerate of you, showing such concern for us.\u201d She bared her teeth at him. \u201cAny other reasons why you\u2019re darkening my doorstep?\u201d<\/p>\n

His brows came together, a puzzled frown on his face. \u201cI\u2019ve yet to darken a doorstep, witch.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re too damn close to our territory\u2014too damn close to a whole lot of people who\u2019d sooner gut you than look at you. Why in the holy hell are you here? Where are the rest of your men?\u201d<\/p>\n

With a humorless smirk on his lips, he said, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t look as though I have any men.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot buying it.\u201d Syn shook her head. \u201cWarlords don\u2019t travel alone. Where are the others?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are none. I\u2019m what you would call a\u2026\u201d He paused, his head cocked as though he was trying to find the word. \u201cA deserter,\u201d he finished, his voice cool and regal.<\/p>\n

Off in the forest, they heard another ominous crack and the ground under them shuddered as one of the forest giants went crashing to the ground. They were going to be dealing with downed trees for a while, she suspected. Glancing up into the canopy, she hoped none of the trees around them gave out just yet.<\/p>\n

Unless of course, one of them fell on the Warlord\u2019s head.<\/p>\n

Xan lifted a hand, rested it on her shoulder. He dipped his head and quietly said, \u201cIt isn\u2019t safe to stay here, Captain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAgreed,\u201d Kalen said, his voice flat and hard.<\/p>\n

Damn it, she knew that. But damn it, she didn\u2019t know what to do. Tersely, she said, \u201cWhat about him?\u201d<\/p>\n

She glanced at Kalen, one quick glance, because she wasn\u2019t looking away from the Warlord for any longer than two seconds.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t answer outloud. His voice, hard and harsh with worry, blasted into her mind with enough force that she almost flinched. \u201cI don\u2019t know what in the hell to do, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s wise to just leave him here.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHow do we know he\u2019s telling the truth about being a deserter? And what in the hell does that mean anyway? Why did he help us?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Kalen\u2019s silver flashed. \u201cI don\u2019t know. And we don\u2019t if he\u2019s telling the truth\u2014you or Elina need to look at him. I can\u2019t do it\u2014if he\u2019s ever encountered a psychic before, he\u2019ll know how to modify his thoughts, but he can\u2019t alter his basic emotional landscape. Look at him\u2014if he\u2019s a threat, kill him. Here and now. Otherwise, he comes with us. But he doesn\u2019t leave here alone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
