Book bloggers\u2026they are your friends<\/h3>\n

Besides librarians and booksellers, another group of people you don\u2019t want to neglect or abuse<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Bookbloggers.<\/p>\n

This doesn\u2019t mean going and totally schmoozing it with them.\u00a0 While some may be totally into that, chances are it will annoy others.<\/p>\n

Just talk<\/em> with them.<\/p>\n

When I say talk<\/em>, I don\u2019t mean hit their blog with<\/p>\n

Hi, I\u2019m Shiloh Walker and I write erotic and paranormal romance, with some romantic suspense thrown in and I see that you like Lora Leigh, JR Ward and Linda Howard.\u00a0 Because of that, I think you should give <\/em>MY<\/strong> work a try.\u00a0 If you\u2019re interested, I\u2019d be happy to send you a copy for review<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Folks\u2026this isn\u2019t talking.\u00a0 This is basically invading a blog, and most authors who use this spiel almost always<\/em> do it where there\u2019s already a conversation going on.\u00a0 So not only to do they intrude on an active conversation, they are doing to pimp their own work, and coincidentally, they are throwing around big names in hopes of catching interest.<\/p>\n

Does it work?\u00a0 Well, you might grab a little bit of interest.\u00a0 But you\u2019ll also annoy a number of readers\u2014you\u2019ll alienate them.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve alienated them, they are less likely to try your work, whether or not they say anything at the present time.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, if you actually just talk\u2026well, you can build up some friendship, or at least friendly relationships and that will do you a heck of a lot more good than the bit of interest you might<\/em> gather from heavy-handed promo.\u00a0 Because when you leave a good impression, people remember you, they talk about you and not in a\u2014holy crap, did you see how she just totally interrupted us to pimp her shit-how rude!<\/em>\u2014sort of way<\/p>\n

When I say TALK<\/em>, I mean\u2026 TALK<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Something like\u2026<\/p>\n

Oh, man\u2026. Linda Howard?\u00a0 I <\/em>love Linda Howard.\u00a0 One of my favorites from her is <\/em>Son of the Morning.\u00a0 That woman can <\/em>write.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Readers tend to get aggravated when an author invades on conversations just to promo-whore her stuff.\u00a0 So despite what you might<\/em> hear from some sources, I really don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to do you any favors to try that route.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an example:\u00a0 If you were having conversation with a friend at the bookstore and somebody suggested a book they liked, or a book they\u2019d loved by an author you were discussing, chances are you wouldn\u2019t mind.\u00a0 This might even be something you<\/em> have done.<\/p>\n

But lets say this person more or less shoves her<\/em> book at you\u2026<\/p>\n

Oh, wow.\u00a0 I see you\u2019re looking at the latest Lora Leigh.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 I write <\/em>just like her, or so people have told me.\u00a0 I think you should try <\/em>my stuff.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Folks, this isn’t a good sales pitch.\u00a0 It’s heavy-handed, it’s awkard.\u00a0 Some authors can work this sort of thing into a conversation.\u00a0 Others?\u00a0 Can’t.\u00a0 Many of the ones I see online?\u00a0 They can’t.\u00a0 They are the ones who intrude on messages boards at Amazon, Goodreads, blogs, all in the name of pimping their stuff.<\/p>\n

When authors use this sort of tactic, it brings about\u2026an awkwardness, we\u2019ll say.\u00a0 Some people may be unsure what to say, period.\u00a0 Some aren\u2019t going to say anything for fear of hurting the author\u2019s feelings.\u00a0 Some just don’t like conflict.\u00a0 And…um, well others just might tell you off to your face.\u00a0 But it puts a strain on what had been a pleasant, open conversation and they can no longer freely discuss things.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t going to help endear you to them, and again, despite what some people think, I really don\u2019t believe it does a big promo boost either.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, if you can just talk to readers and bloggers about the common ground we\u2019ve got?\u00a0 Which is a love of books?\u00a0 That can do you a world of good.\u00a0 If you can be genuine.\u00a0 I never set out to build a huge network of bookblogger friends.\u00a0 I was just talking to people about books, because\u2026well, I kind of love to talk to people about books.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t really talk about mine\u2014I feel weird<\/em> talking about my books.\u00a0 If somebody asks questions, yeah, I\u2019ll answer.\u00a0 But when I\u2019m at a book blogger\u2019s blog, a reader\u2019s blog?\u00a0 I\u2019m there to talk books.\u00a0 If I\u2019m at another author\u2019s blog, I\u2019m either there as a guest\u2026 I don\u2019t mean a guest blogger-those are different rules, I mean as in a guest in their house<\/em>\u2026or as a friend.\u00a0 It does us well to remember courtesy.<\/p>\n

However, this doesn\u2019t mean it doesn\u2019t help get my name out.\u00a0 People ended up at my blog because they saw me talking at other blogs.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had people tell me they bought my books just<\/em> because they saw me recommending other people\u2019s books\u2014and no<\/em>, this isn\u2019t why I do it.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t be honest when you\u2019re out there in blogland, don\u2019t bother because, people?\u00a0 Readers aren\u2019t stupid and when you\u2019re putting on a front, it comes through a lot more clear than people tend to realize.<\/p>\n

Just remember that readers and bookbloggers… They are people\u2026treat them with courtesy and respect, and they\u2019ll give it back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
