{"id":8080,"date":"2010-07-14T09:00:33","date_gmt":"2010-07-14T13:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?p=8080"},"modified":"2010-07-11T19:06:48","modified_gmt":"2010-07-11T23:06:48","slug":"goodreads-bad-promo-a-mini-rant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2010\/07\/goodreads-bad-promo-a-mini-rant\/","title":{"rendered":"GoodReads &#038; Bad Promo&#8230; a mini rant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;m on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/96909.Shiloh_Walker\">GoodReads<\/a>.\u00a0 But I don&#8217;t do much there-just keep my profile up, approve the friend requests &amp; add in new books I buy when I remember.\u00a0 If I was any sort of organized, I could probably organize my books, the books I want, the books I&#8217;ve read through there a <em>lot<\/em> better.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a ramble for another today, though. Today isn&#8217;t about rambles.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about ranting.<\/p>\n<h2>Dear GoodReads Authors:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are recommending your own books to me, please stop.\u00a0 It&#8217;s annoying.\u00a0 And no, I&#8217;m not the only one who thinks so&#8230; ask the readers&#8230; they get annoyed, too.\u00a0 Many of them go and unfriend when happens too often.<\/li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8090\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/UP.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8090\" title=\"UP\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/UP.jpg?resize=193%2C260\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9Disney|UP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<li>If you are friending me just to pimp your books?\u00a0 Don&#8217;t bother. Because I will not buy you.\u00a0 There is such a thing as subtly.\u00a0 Use a dictionary and look it up.<\/li>\n<li>If you send me a message asking me to recommend your books to my friends-after all, <em>&#8216;I&#8217;m self-published and I am my own marketing and publicity team&#8217;<\/em>, not only will I <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not <\/span><\/strong>check your book out, your name now goes on my list of authors I&#8217;m not very likely to buy&#8230; yes, I realize self-pubbed authors have to handle marketing &amp; publicity on their own.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a hard gig.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m not a fan of going that route-it&#8217;s too much hard work.\u00a0 But you signed up for it.\u00a0 You do that hard work.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t try to enlist me.\u00a0 And when you try to enlist others, whether readers or authors through such hard-sell tactics, you actually do more <em>harm<\/em> than good&#8230; you might get a few who do that, but true word of mouth does you a lot more good than&#8230; &#8220;<strong>please oh please oh please buy my book&#8217;<\/strong> (That tactic didn&#8217;t work for Doug the dog in UP when he was trying to talk the bird into his prisoner.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not going to work for you either.)<\/li>\n<li>Stop bleating about how wonderful your books are.\u00a0 We all want to think our books are awesome.\u00a0 We really, really do.\u00a0 But if you can&#8217;t actually <em>interact<\/em> with people withoutsinging your own praises?\u00a0 You&#8217;ve lost people before you&#8217;ve really even had a chance to hook them.<\/li>\n<li>And if you&#8217;re wondering who this is directed to&#8230;well, I&#8217;m not naming names-that&#8217;s not cool, it&#8217;s not professional, but for crying out loud, if you&#8217;re one of bajillion that keep recommending your own books to me????\u00a0 Or you friended me just to pimp your books??? Or you&#8217;re one of the numerous self-pubbed authors who messaged me thinking you could get me to recommend your books to others???? Yes.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sorry, I don&#8217;t want to be harsh, but yep, it&#8217;s directed toward you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Subtly&#8230; it can do you a world of good.<\/p>\n<p>And on occasion, so can sending out a good, old-fashioned, smack-them-over-the-message like this.\u00a0 <strong>When you annoy readers, you lose readers.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;m on GoodReads.\u00a0 But I don&#8217;t do much there-just keep my profile up, approve the friend requests &amp;
