So.\u00a0 You going to a conference or convention this summer?\u00a0 Meeting up an editor this summer?\u00a0 An agent?<\/p>\n

Or maybe you just chat up with them at blogs.\u00a0 On twitter.<\/p>\n

I want to share with you something that I see a lot.\u00a0 Either online, especially on blogs, or at conventions, conferences and get-togethers.<\/p>\n

Agents and editors tend to get rushed<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And they get rushed by people who often gush<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Now, I understand the nerves behind this.\u00a0 Honestly.\u00a0 For those who don’t read my blog regularly, maybe you should read this post<\/a>…although I’ll hit the highlight here.\u00a0 It was at RWA Nationals, where I got to meet Nora Roberts, Jayne Ann Krentz, Susan Elizabeth Phillips…<\/p>\n

One of the authors I got to meet was Jayne Ann Krentz<\/a>-love her books.\u00a0 She was one of the authors I discovered right after I found Nora Roberts.\u00a0 I introduced myself to JAK and she tells me she enjoys my books.\u00a0 At this point, I\u2019m somewhere in the vicinity of the clouds-the cirrus ones\u2026you know, those really wispy ones that are like almost in the stratosphere?\u00a0 That\u2019s where I was.<\/p>\n

When I get back to my room, I tell my mom.\u00a0 One of my fave authors has read my books.\u00a0 o_O\u00a0\u00a0 Can we say \u2018googly-eyed?\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m talking a mile a minute while I grab my stuff for the parties.\u00a0 A few minutes later, we hit the door and head down the hall.\u00a0 At the same time, one of my neighbors also heads out.\u00a0 My friend is talking to the lady\u2026she looks very familiar, I can\u2019t figure out why, and naturally my friend isn\u2019t exactly catching my \u2019subtle\u2019 signals.\u00a0 So finally, I ask outloud\u2026\u00a0 \u201cWho is this?\u201d\u00a0 while I\u2019m rudely pointing at the lady.<\/p>\n

The lady smiles, as friendly as can be, and says\u2026.\u00a0 \u201cOh, I\u2019m Jayne Ann Krentz.\u201d<\/p>\n

I blink, and then say\u2026\u00a0 \u201cNo, I just met her.\u201d<\/p>\n

And my friend is rolling her eyes, looking at me and going,\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cYou are such a dork.\u00a0 This is Susan Elizabeth Phillips<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

I die.\u00a0 Then I accost Susan Elizabeth Phillips.\u00a0 In the hallway.\u00a0 I grab her and hug her and squeal, \u201cOh, I love your books!\u201d\u00a0 (I\u2019m not a hugger\u2026I am not normally a squealer, either)<\/p>\n

Turns out that SEP heard me telling my mom about me meeting Jayne Ann Krentz.\u00a0 My friend thinks I\u2019m strange and weird and rude, but apparently SEP thought it was funny.\u00a0 Made her laugh\u2026 that\u2019s not a bad thing, right?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Gushing isn’t always bad, especially if you make people laugh.\u00a0 But there’s a difference between gushing<\/em> and ass-kissing<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What I see a lot at events, or on blogs, is ass-kissing.\u00a0 Or worse, it’s people who look like they are trying to come off as extremely clever or witty, hoping they’ll come off as memorable to this supreme being.<\/p>\n

Guys…they aren’t<\/em> supreme beings.\u00a0 Don’t wax endlessly about how this person or that person how so much knowledge or foresight or insight.\u00a0 Know what?\u00a0 You’re probably the ten billionth person who has said so. \u00a0 You’re not standing out.<\/p>\n

Yes, you’ll probably find the ones who respond very well to extreme flattery\/ass-kissery type behavior.\u00a0 But think about it-that’s fickle.\u00a0 What if you have a book that doesn’t sell<\/em> as well you’d want, but you really believe in it…do you want a fickle agent?\u00a0 A fickle editor?\u00a0 Not to say that they won’t get down to business, but hey…they are people.\u00a0 Just like you.\u00a0 Just like me.\u00a0 There are fickle authors, fickle readers, fickle nurses, fickle people…so there are fickle agents, fickle editors…<\/p>\n

I don’t want fickle.<\/p>\n

I want serious.<\/p>\n

I don’t want somebody who responds to ass-kissing.\u00a0 I don’t want somebody who responds to somebody’s attempts to sound witty.<\/p>\n

I want somebody who responds to me<\/em>. The real me. My books.<\/p>\n

Talk to them like people.\u00a0 Because that’s what they are.<\/p>\n

Some of the stuff I’ve heard people say in person to agents and editors, it’s so…well…obsequious, it leaves me wincing in sympathy.\u00a0 Don’t try to win through flattery and don’t try to be overly witty.<\/p>\n

They’ve seen<\/em> that.\u00a0 Just talk to them.\u00a0 That agent, that editor–they are people.\u00a0 They get up in the morning.\u00a0 They brush their teeth. They go see doctors.\u00a0\u00a0 They pay bills.\u00a0 They have frustrations and quirks and flaws.<\/p>\n

Anything you try to do or saw to impress<\/em> them, they’ve have probably already seen it.<\/p>\n

What they haven’t seen?\u00a0 You.\u00a0 They haven’t seen you.\u00a0 They haven’t read your work, heard your voice.\u00a0 Give them that.<\/p>\n

And relax…they know you’re nervous.\u00a0 I think it’s okay.\u00a0 They don’t expect you not<\/em> to be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
