Then What?<\/h2>\n

You\u2019ve signed the contract, with or without an agent\u2014whichever you decided was the best for your chosen career path.<\/p>\n

What happens next?<\/p>\n

Well, hopefully, you\u2019re already working on the next book.\u00a0 There is always<\/em> the next book, you know. \u00a0Actually, when it comes to publishing, a writer tends to be working on three or more books at any one time\u2014not writing<\/em> them, exactly, but we are working on promo for whatever is coming out soon, we\u2019re editing\/writing what\u2019s due out in the coming months, and we\u2019re getting the ideas together for whatever we’re pitching next.\u00a0 It\u2019s never<\/em> just one book.<\/p>\n

At some point, you\u2019ll hear from whoever your editor is going to be.\u00a0 It may or may not be the editor who contacted you with an offer.<\/p>\n

If you write for epubs, something you\u2019ll probably get that\u2019s different from traditional pubs?\u00a0 Forms about things like cover art\u2014cover art requests.<\/p>\n

Huh? What\u2019s that?\u00a0 It\u2019s just that.\u00a0 You\u2019ll get a standardized form asking what sort of artwork you have in mind for your cover.\u00a0 Don\u2019t freak if you don\u2019t have anything in mind.\u00a0 I rarely have any certain image in mind.\u00a0 Just peruse the cover art of your publisher\u2026and others<\/em>\u2026and get an idea for the \u2018feel\u2019 you want.\u00a0\u00a0 That can give an idea where to start.<\/p>\n

With epubs, you actually get some say, or at least a lot of suggestion when it comes to cover art.\u00a0 Although I will say I\u2019ve been surprised with a number of my traditionally pubbed titles, I have been asked if I had anything in mind.\u00a0 I think Chains<\/em><\/strong> was the first one, and I actually did have an idea of something I\u2019d like\u2014a woman, dark background\u2026with chains.<\/p>\n

Simple, striking, and in my opinion, perfect.<\/p>\n

There will be revisions, probably.\u00a0 Revisions can be from something as simple as a few minor changes to fairly substantial.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t panic.\u00a0 It\u2019s part of the process.<\/p>\n

And remember that<\/em>.\u00a0 It is<\/em> part of the process.\u00a0 Not a one of us are so perfect that we can\u2019t<\/em> improve our writing.<\/p>\n

However, also<\/em> remember\u2026sometimes there might be requested changes that we feel will change the voice of our story.<\/p>\n

Know when something is actually improving<\/em> the story, and when something might be making your story not<\/em> your story. \u00a0\u00a0If it\u2019s mechanics, that\u2019s an improvement thing, and chances are, you need to do it.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s changing your voice, though, then you need to think about whether or not you want to do that.\u00a0 Editors like writers who are flexible and easy to work with.\u00a0 But writers create the story and we want our story to remain just that.<\/p>\n

Just don\u2019t be a diva about it.\u00a0 The diva routine, it\u2019s gets old, fast, and if you\u2019re new, your editor isn\u2019t going to put up with it.\u00a0 Even if you\u2019re not<\/em> new, your editor isn\u2019t likely to put up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
