Thursdays tips are a new feature I’m doing…basically aimed at the newly published\/contracted.\u00a0 I’ll be compiling the posts and publishing them somewhere for download once I’m done with the articles.<\/em><\/h3>\n

No Agent?<\/h3>\n

In epublishing, it\u2019s not<\/em> uncommon to get a contract offer without an agent.\u00a0 In epublishing, it\u2019s not uncommon to sign and write without using an agent.\u00a0 I don\u2019t use an agent on my epublishing contracts and I\u2019m comfortable enough with the lingo to navigate those waters on my own.<\/p>\n

However\u2026if you\u2019ve just been offered a contract by an epublisher, no matter how big they are, how well established, how well known, please, please, please, have a contract attorney review the contract first<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I do know that my epubs have a \u2018customized\u2019 contract for me and each time I turn in a new work, this same contract is used.\u00a0\u00a0 You can ask if this is something that can be done so you don\u2019t need to worry about paying that fee each time you sign a contract, but trust me, it\u2019s better to pay a contract attorney than to not<\/em> pay it and then spend years wishing you had.<\/p>\n

In traditional publishing, it\u2019s not<\/em> as usual to get a contract offer without having an agent.\u00a0 Many publishers do require an agent submit the work, but that doesn\u2019t mean you won\u2019t get an offer.<\/p>\n

My first offer from a traditional publisher came without me submitting a work, and I didn\u2019t have an agent.\u00a0 I was still just writing for my epubs and was contacted by an editor about writing a novella for an anthology.\u00a0 This has happened for other authors, so it does and can happen.<\/p>\n

But\u2026there\u2019s no way I\u2019m going to navigate the waters of traditional publishing without an agent on my side.<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

v\u00a0 There\u2019s more money involved<\/p>\n

v\u00a0 There are more markets<\/em> involved<\/p>\n

v\u00a0 There are usually more books<\/em> involved<\/p>\n

v\u00a0 There is more legalese involved<\/p>\n

v\u00a0 The contracts tend to be more complicated<\/p>\n

With things like First Right of Refusal, Option on Next Work, etc, etc, etc, etc\u2026 I\u2019m not signing those contracts without having an agent on my side.<\/p>\n

The agent is there to push for my<\/em> best interest.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s not affiliated with the publisher, she\u2019s not working for the publisher, she\u2019s there to help me, to fight for my best interests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
