{"id":581,"date":"2008-01-08T15:09:57","date_gmt":"2008-01-08T15:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shilohwalker.wordpress.com\/2008\/01\/08\/when-it-rains\/"},"modified":"2008-01-08T15:09:57","modified_gmt":"2008-01-08T15:09:57","slug":"when-it-rains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2008\/01\/when-it-rains\/","title":{"rendered":"When it rains&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, so I just finished edits last week or the week before on <i>Hearts and Wishes<\/i>, due out from EC in February.<\/p>\n<p>The week or two before that, I was finishing up edits on <i>Beautiful Girl<\/i>, which comes out from Samhain end of this month.<\/p>\n<p>Then on Saturday that lovely fedex package showed up containing edits for <i>Through the Veil<\/i>, due out in mass market this summer.  I&#8217;ve also got a novella to write, a book to proofread and polish so I can get it to my editor before 2\/1.<\/p>\n<p>Oye&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Since I&#8217;m too busy today to play, how about an excerpt from <i>Beautiful Girl<\/i>?  Warning&#8230; this is from my UNEDITED copy since the final is still being finished up.<\/p>\n<p>~*~*~*~<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">\u201cDamn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">Over the pounding of her heart and the rattle of the chain, Del hadn\u2019t heard the door open.<span>  <\/span>She spun around, hands lifted in defense.<span>  <\/span>When she saw Blake standing there, she lowered them.<span>  <\/span>She sucked in air and jerked the gloves off and tossed them on the floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">The heavy bag was still swinging back and forth and automatically, she reached out and laid a hand on it. \u201cHello, Blake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">He sauntered into the garage and circled around her.<span>  <\/span>\u201cYou picked up some moves, didn\u2019t you, Deedee?<span>  <\/span>You pounding on anybody in particular or just working up a sweat?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">\u201cDel,\u201d she corrected automatically.<span>  <\/span>He moved closer and it seemed as though the big garage seemed to shrink, closing in around her.<span>  <\/span>Her face heated as she remembered how she had broken down in front of him.<span>  <\/span>She hadn\u2019t thought about it at the time, but later, down at the lake, Del realized the entire time she\u2019d been crying, he had been holding her and she hadn\u2019t once felt afraid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">Blake moved a little closer and despite herself, Del felt that familiar panic reared its ugly head and she battled it back down.<span>  <\/span>Blake wouldn\u2019t hurt her.<span>  <\/span>She knew that, knew it enough so that she really didn\u2019t feel that threatened even when he did move in on her a little, eliminating even more distance between them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">He brushed a damp strand of hair back from her face, his fingers lingering on the curve of her neck.<span>  <\/span>\u201cHow are you?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">\u201cFine.\u201d<span>  <\/span>Inanely, she asked, \u201cYou?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">A faint grin came and went on his face and he drawled, \u201cOh, I\u2019m right as rain, ma\u2019am.\u201d<span>  <\/span>His lids drooped, shielding his gaze, but there was little mistaking the lazy, lambent look in his eyes.<span>  <\/span>She felt frozen in place as he looked down at her.<span>  <\/span>He seemed to take in every single thing about her, seeing beyond the too loose pants, the form fitting shirt and drab brown braids.<span>  <\/span>Those eyes of his had always seen too deep. He saw so much of her and Del hated it.<span>  <\/span>Hated how he made her feel. These yearning, needy feelings were just a disaster waiting to happen.<span>  <\/span>She\u2019d gone twelve years not letting anybody get too close, physically and emotionally.<span>  <\/span>Even if she had finally admitted to herself that she was far from okay, she didn\u2019t know if she was ready to risk letting somebody get close again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">Especially not Blake.<span>  <\/span>He had an advantage over most, considering he\u2019d been her first, and only, love.<span>  <\/span>She\u2019d always figured romanticized her memories of him but looking at him, she had to wonder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">He was still so ridiculously good looking, more so now than he had been in high school.<span>  <\/span>Those fine, rather chiseled looking good looks of his belonged in Hollywood, not in Prescott, Tennessee, a small town in the middle of nowhere.<span>  <\/span>Impossibly blue eyes and a mouth she could still remember feeling against hers.<span>  <\/span>She had the odd urge to reach up and pull off the black cloth covering his head.<span>  <\/span>Plain and simple, she wanted to reach out and touch him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">Del hadn\u2019t wanted to touch anybody in so damn long.<span>  <\/span>And it scared the hell out of her. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><i><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">Maybe it\u2019s time you did\u2026 <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">That voice seemed to come from all those wishful, wistful yearnings.<span>  <\/span>Common sense told her something else. Carefully, Del edged around him, circling away without really appearing to run.<span>   <\/span>\u201cDo you need something, Blake?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">He shrugged, still moving forward with that slow, lazy grace.<span>  <\/span>Gently, he asked, \u201cAre you afraid of me, Del?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">Disgusted with herself, she planted her feet and met his gaze levelly.<span>  <\/span>\u201cOf you?<span>  <\/span>Not exactly.\u201d<span>  <\/span>She shrugged her shoulders and admitted, \u201cOf men in general?<span>  <\/span>Yeah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">He nodded and murmured, \u201cI get that.<span>  <\/span>What if I want to touch you?<span>  <\/span>Should I ask?<span>  <\/span>Should I not bother?<span>  <\/span>If I told you that I wanted to kiss you, would you tell me to get back in my car and just leave you the hell alone?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">Fear had her shaking.<span>  <\/span>Her voice was almost non-existent and she couldn\u2019t decide who was more surprised when she said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">Blake\u2019s eyes darkened and he closed the distance between them and dipped his head.<span>  <\/span>He pressed his mouth to hers, keeping the touch light and gentle.<span>  <\/span>He gave her plenty of room to pull away and she was the one who deepened the kiss.<span>  <\/span>She rose on her toes and pressed her mouth against his with a little more pressure.<span>  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">Del sighed against his lips and that soft, hungry little female sound was sheer torture.<span>  <\/span>At the same time, it was sheer bliss.<span>  <\/span>Blake wanted nothing more than to grab her and hold her tight against him, taking the kiss deeper, harder.<span>  <\/span>He was greedy for the taste of her and would have chopped off a limb just to get it, but he didn\u2019t do anything.<span>  <\/span>He just stood there and let her kiss him.<span>  <\/span>She licked his lower lip and he felt the blood drain out of his head and straight down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">It was heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;text-indent:0.3in;line-height:150%;\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt;line-height:150%;font-family:'Book Antiqua';\">It was hell.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, so I just finished edits last week or the week before on Hearts and Wishes, due out from EC in February.
