There was a chill to his features that made her gut go cold. And suddenly, Daisy wished she had stayed in bed. Wouldn\u2019t have mattered though. She felt cold all over. A cop knew what was wrong when a person was woken up in the middle of the night. It was because somebody had died.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you here?\u201d she asked softly, backing away from him. She rested her hips against the hall table and folded her arms around her chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTanya?\u201d Daisy asked, clenching her jaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo\u2026Tanya hasn\u2019t passed on yet,\u201d he said quietly. He continued to watch her closely and she saw the answer in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Daisy had never seen anybody who looked as haunted as he did. She prayed she\u2019d never see it again. Swallowing the knot in throat, she said huskily, \u201cThen you\u2019re going to have to explain who you are talking about. Tanya is the only one who has died recently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you that he had taken somebody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seemed like the pit of her belly dropped out. Closing her eyes, she said, \u201cNo. You said he just took her.\u201d One hand closed into a tight fist and she fought against the useless burst of fury. No.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t kill her. She died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perplexed, Daisy opened her eyes and glared at him. She shoved off the table and planted her hands on her hips. \u201cDamn it, O\u2019Rourke, you\u2019re not making much sense. Now granted, it is the middle of the night and I\u2019m in dire need of a caffeine rush. But if you\u2019re going to come here and tell me that a girl is dead\u2014\u201d She clamped her mouth shut and hissed out a breath. She took a deep breath. Tried to think, turned his words over in her head. Nope. Still didn\u2019t make sense. Looking back at him, she said in a tight voice, \u201cYou need to remember something. I\u2019m a cop. I\u2019m the town sheriff. I take a dead girl pretty damned seriously. Especially since we have a killer using my town as his hunting ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His lashes lowered, hiding the haunting blue of his eyes. \u201cShe was sick\u2014bad heart. I told you that. I think her heart gave out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With that, he turned on his heel and started for the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused, looking over his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere in the hell do you think you\u2019re going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut to the field. Tanya might be ready to talk to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Propping her hands on her hips, Daisy stared at him. \u201cWhy? What changes things from this morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause a girl is dead,\u201d Michael said, his tone patient, as though he was talking to a small child.<br \/>\n\u201cYeah and this morning, talking might have saved her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s lips curled in a sad smile. \u201cI don\u2019t think so\u2014you don\u2019t understand, Sheriff. The deceased, they are like kids. Like a young one, scared, confused and alone in the dark. She couldn\u2019t this morning\u2014it just wasn\u2019t time, not for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo because it wasn\u2019t time for her, some young girl was raped and tortured, probably scared to death\u2014\u201d her voice faded away at the look on his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. She wasn\u2019t hurt. I don\u2019t know what happened. But there\u2014wasn\u2019t that tortured touch to her. I need to go. Are you coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Damned jerk,<\/em> Daisy thought a few minutes later as she drove over the rough roads. He sat next to her in silence.
