FYI, it&#8217;s erotic romance so if that&#8217;s not your thing&#8230;\u00a0although this snippet isn&#8217;t racy.<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWho could do this?\u201d Eli muttered. The vampire had the face of a fallen angel\u2014high cheekbones, a mouth that was almost too pretty for a man and eyes the color of old gold. His blond hair was tied back in a stubby ponytail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He was pissed. His eyes glowed with fury and Tori could see a muscle jerking in his jaw as he stared at the kids who were gathered around his wife. The youngest one sat in Sarel\u2019s lap, playing with the witch\u2019s braid. The middle child was lying on his belly, drawing a picture. \u201cThis is my mommy. She died. She got sick. There was a bump in her chest and it got bigger and bigger\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cShe had cancer.\u201d It was the first thing the oldest child had said since Eli and Sarel had arrived. Her voice was soft and timid and she wouldn\u2019t look at anybody. The fear inside that child broke Tori\u2019s heart. Her straw-yellow hair hung in her face as she said, \u201cShe just kept getting sicker and sicker. I tried to make her feel better. I tried to help. But I didn\u2019t help enough. It\u2019s my fault she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cNo.\u201d Sarel\u2019s voice was firm but gentle. She reached out and touched the girl\u2019s arm\u2014one quick, light touch and then she pulled away. Tori still thought the woman was a bitch and a half but she had a way with kids that Tori envied. Kids adored her. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t your fault, Beth. Sometimes people just get sick. And it\u2019s nobody\u2019s fault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Beth shook her head. \u201cIt was my fault. God took her because I\u2019m bad. I\u2019m evil.\u201d She looked down at her hands and Tori could see they were shaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cYou are not evil.\u201d Sarel\u2019s eyes were flashing, burning with anger but no sign of her fury showed in her voice. \u201cYou\u2019re a kid. God doesn\u2019t punish little kids. He loves them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sarel continued to talk to them and by the time Tori left the room twenty minutes later, even the oldest one had a small smile on her face. Eli followed her out of the room and Tori gave him a grin. \u201cIt\u2019s still hard to believe how good she is with kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Eli\u2019s lips curved upward in a smile and he arched a brow at her. \u201cYou know why the two of you don\u2019t get along, Torrence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBecause you fell in love with a mean bitch?\u201d Tori offered helpfully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He just laughed. \u201cSarel can be mean when she wants. Just like you. That is the problem, pet. The two of you are entirely too much alike. Stubborn, hot headed, willful and arrogant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tori curled her lip in a sneer. \u201cBite me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI already have.\u201d Eli laughed. \u201cAnd as delightful as it was, any more biting on my part and Sarel will rip my balls off.\u201d He passed a hand down her hair and then rested it on her shoulder. \u201cGo on. I know you want to catch up with Declan. We\u2019ll take care of the children. They are in good hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She smiled faintly. \u201cI know they are.\u201d She turned around and moved to hug Eli but as she moved toward him, she stumbled. Bent over. A deep, racking cough choked her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Smoke. Choking her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Fire. Searing her flesh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cDeclan\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Distantly, she heard her name being called. Felt big, strong hands on her arms, shaking her. Another voice. A hand touched her face.
