{"id":5241,"date":"2007-07-25T08:00:27","date_gmt":"2007-07-25T08:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shilohwalker.wordpress.com\/2007\/07\/25\/hwh-workshop-that-all-important-tension\/"},"modified":"2007-07-25T08:00:27","modified_gmt":"2007-07-25T08:00:27","slug":"hwh-workshop-that-all-important-tension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2007\/07\/hwh-workshop-that-all-important-tension\/","title":{"rendered":"HWH Workshop, that all important tension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So we&#8217;ve talked about getting to your characters.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve\u00a0talked about backstory and reasons why the H\/H should (or shouldn&#8217;t) be together and how to show more emotion in bed and making the sex scenes love scenes.<\/p>\n<p>Since\u00a0I&#8217;m lazy and\u00a0I don&#8217;t always explain myself clearly, again, we&#8217;re going to hear what other authors had to say about it when I asked them,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A good romance is going to have emotional tension.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>A good erotic romance has to have both emotional and sexual tension. <span>\u00a0 <\/span>How do you accomplish it?\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/jaciburton.com\">Jaci \u00a0Burton <\/a>said<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I think in erotic romance you have to have both emotional and sexual tension. Entwine the two together&#8211;make the characters feel both emotional and sexual longing for each other. Physical longing is great, but if that&#8217;s all there is, the reader isn&#8217;t invested in the characters, doesn&#8217;t care about them being together. It&#8217;s just sex. Emotional longing, the craving of the mind, heart and soul to be with that one person they know they have to be with&#8211;that&#8217;s the big payoff in an erotic romance<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sylviaday.com\">Sylvia\u00a0Day<\/a> said<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span>Since the sex should be moving the plot\/character arcs\u00a0forward, the tension should be inherent. One of the reasons why I love reading\/writing erotic romances is because it&#8217;s fantastic to watch the sexual tension between two people who&#8217;ve already had sex, yet know that furthering the relationship will impede their goals. Once you&#8217;ve had\u00a0a pleasure,\u00a0resistance becomes\u00a0much harder. You know how good it is; you want more. Fighting an addiction is tense, and that&#8217;s where the sexual tension comes into play.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><a href=\"http:\/\/angelasknights.com\">Angela Knight<\/a>\u00a0says<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span>You accomplish sexual and emotional tension by reminding the reader frequently that they&#8217;re attracted to each other, and why.\u00a0 You also have to stress their reasons for NOT becoming a permanent couple.\u00a0 &#8220;I can&#8217;t fall in love with her because she&#8217;s a werewolf, and I&#8217;m not.&#8221;\u00a0 Or whatever.\u00a0 What you&#8217;re doing is creating tension between that romantic, erotic attraction and all the reasons they can&#8217;t be together, so the reader is thinking, &#8220;How is she ever going to resolve this?\u00a0 How are they going to get together?&#8221; <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>What works for one writer isn&#8217;t going to work for another.\u00a0 I tend to get hmmm&#8230; dramatic&#8230;almost overly so, I think, and when I write, I try to focus on what emotions the characters are feeling when they are together, whether they are fighting, whether they are making love or facing down death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But one thing clear from everybody that I&#8217;ve talked to is that the emotion is crucial<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We are writing erotic romance.\u00a0 Yes, it&#8217;s explicit, it&#8217;s HAWT, it might make you want to jump into an icy shower when you&#8217;re done, but it&#8217;s a romance.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re working through the book and it&#8217;s lacking that emotion, go back and see if you can get that emotion in there.\u00a0 Yes, it can take time.\u00a0 Some can write faster than others but you have to set your own pace and make the book.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>You can&#8217;t just string sex scenes together and think that&#8217;s what makes an erotic romance.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not even erotica.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just porn and that&#8217;s usually not what a reader is looking for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Get the heart into the book and it will be worth it in the end.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So we&#8217;ve talked about getting to your characters.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve\u00a0talked about backstory and reasons why the H\/H should (or shouldn&#8217;t) be together and how to show<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2007\/07\/hwh-workshop-that-all-important-tension\/\" class=\"more-link\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;HWH Workshop, that all important tension&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"facebook_10161045129738658_54762468447":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_bluesky_dont_syndicate":"","_bluesky_syndication_accounts":"","_bluesky_syndication_text":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[61],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5241","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-writing"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
