After all, I&#8217;m now in my 30s.\u00a0 Turned 31.\u00a0 Honestly, as long as I keep getting presents, I&#8217;m cool with having birthdays.\u00a0 It&#8217;s better than the alternative, right?\u00a0 And hey&#8230;I&#8217;m greedy and materialistic.\u00a0 I <em>love <\/em>getting presents.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">This card, from my kids, made me laugh.\u00a0 I made a comment last night that maybe the baby bratlet would let me sleep in for a present.\u00a0 Naturally&#8230; she did not.\u00a0 She still in the <em>I want Mama and only Mama will do<\/em> stage, so once she wakes up, I have to get up too.\u00a0 Guess that is what happens when you nurse a baby until they are a year old.\u00a0 ;o)\u00a0 I did get a nap though, which isn&#8217;t a frequent thing.\u00a0 I did like my nap.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Back to the card&#8230;<em>How\u00a0can a working mom get 8 hours sleep?\u00a0 Divide it into 2 nights.<\/em>\u00a0 Man, that is so true.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">It&#8217;s weird when people ask me what I do.\u00a0 I tell them that I&#8217;m a writer, or that I work at home&#8230;most people, the first thing they know about me is that I&#8217;m a mom.\u00a0 If I don&#8217;t have my kids with me, it&#8217;s a little different, but it usually comes up.\u00a0 (Me, talk about my rottens much?\u00a0 Nah)<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The common reply when people hear that I work at home, that I&#8217;m a writer, or however I phrase it depending on the situation, is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Oh, that must be nice.\u00a0 You get to spend more time with your kids.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">I don&#8217;t think most of them are trying to sound condescending when they say that.\u00a0 Really, I don&#8217;t.\u00a0 The <strong>condescension<\/strong> comes after I tell them I write&#8230; gasp&#8230; <em>romance<\/em>.\u00a0<em>\u00a0 <\/em>I mean, come on&#8230;I gave up a career as a pediatric nurse to write smut.\u00a0 That deserves condescension<strong> <\/strong>right?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">I won&#8217;t get into the condescending people, although I could go on a diatribe.\u00a0 No, this is more about the people who think writing and keeping the kids at home while you write is akin to walking and chewing gum.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think they\u00a0are trying to be condescending. \u00a0I think they are just&#8230;hmmmm&#8230; misinformed.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Writing is a job.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a process.\u00a0 It requires some modicum of concentration.\u00a0 And how many people could concentrate with the following:<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Mom, I&#8217;m bored.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Mom, she took my game.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Mom, he hit me.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Mom, she won&#8217;t play with me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Mom, I&#8217;m hungry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Mom, I want to go\u00a0 __________ (fill the blank with swimming, bike riding, to the YMCA or a million other options)<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Can you see a nurse being able to do her job with that going on?\u00a0 A doctor?\u00a0 A manager at the local Wendy&#8217;s or a cashier at Walmart?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Uh&#8230; no.\u00a0 I guess a lot of people don&#8217;t realize that writing, just like any other profession, is a job.\u00a0 It requires your focus, your concentration, and it&#8217;s hard to split it between three kids and the laptop.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now ain&#8217;t that the truth&#8230; Today&#8217;s my birthday.\u00a0 My husband keeps warning me sooner or later, I&#8217;m going to hate birthdays.
