I mentioned in the first post on etiquette<\/a> that how you carry yourself online can affect your career.<\/p>\n

A perfect example…my name was mentioned to Cindy Hwang by a couple of people- Angela Knight<\/a> being one of them.\u00a0 While I was pondering these ‘etiquette’ posts, I asked AK if she would have mentioned me to Cindy if I was a totally mean, nasty evil bitch.<\/p>\n

Her response…<\/p>\n

AK:\u00a0Nope, if you\u2019d been a total bitch, I probably wouldn\u2019t have mentioned you to Cindy.\u00a0 And not simply because of my feelings toward bitches. \u00a0Cindy would have to deal with you, and if you\u2019d made her life miserable, she wouldn\u2019t have appreciated my recommending you.\u00a0 So advocating for a bitch wouldn\u2019t have been good for my career.\u00a0 <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/font>When I recommend other writers to an editor, I want it to be somebody who is responsible and professional.\u00a0 Bitches are neither.\u00a0 Neither are people too flaky to meet their deadlines.<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nIf she hadn’t passed my name on, I don’t know that Hunting the Hunter <\/em>would have ever been written.\u00a0 I probably wouldn’t be working on my sixth (I think) book for Berkley, and I certainly wouldn’t have been asked to do a second anthology with them.\u00a0 Would they have come looking in my direction?\u00a0 Possibly.\u00a0 Would I have submitted to them?\u00a0 Maybe sooner or later.<\/p>\n

But I can say with relative certainty, it wouldn’t have happened as early on for me as it did.\u00a0 Angela wasn’t the only one who’d mentioned me to Cindy~I believe one other friend did and I know her well enough to know that if I\u00a0had been a\u00a0total bitch, she wouldn’t have\u00a0done it.<\/p>\n

This is just one example, one based in fact, of what can happen if you try to maintain a somewhat professional persona online.\u00a0 Have I done everything perfect?\u00a0 Of course not.\u00a0 Nor am I Miss Congeniality.\u00a0 But you need to think before putting something on the internet.\u00a0 It’s pretty much there forever<\/em>.\u00a0 If you are going to look back in one, five, ten or fifty years and cringe…hit the delete key.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
