{"id":5099,"date":"2007-03-06T16:17:24","date_gmt":"2007-03-06T16:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shilohwalker.wordpress.com\/2007\/03\/06\/the-alpha-hero\/"},"modified":"2007-03-06T16:17:24","modified_gmt":"2007-03-06T16:17:24","slug":"the-alpha-hero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2007\/03\/the-alpha-hero\/","title":{"rendered":"The Alpha Hero"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elliot_Stabler\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/shilohwalker.files.wordpress.com\/2007\/03\/200px-elliot_stabler.thumbnail.jpg?w=1170\" alt=\"200px-elliot_stabler.jpg\" \/><em>Picture found at Wikipedia<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eliot Stabler-<em>the<\/em> alpha hero, as far as I&#8217;m concerned.\u00a0 No, I&#8217;m not in lust with him and I don&#8217;t drool over him.\u00a0 He&#8217;s average looking, IMO.<\/p>\n<p>The guy\u00a0faces off with a child molestor and\u00a0you can just\u00a0hear the thoughts going on in his head&#8230;he wants that bastard dead, plain and simple.\u00a0 But he wears a badge and he believes in what he does.\u00a0 He loves his kids, he loves his wife, although their marriage goes beyond rocky and he would die for his partner, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olivia_Benson\">Benson<\/a>.\u00a0 In keeping with the show, Stabler&#8217;s character is intense, broody and not without a little bit of violence.\u00a0 He&#8217;s flawed and that&#8217;s one of the things I love the most about his character.\u00a0 He ain&#8217;t perfect.<\/p>\n<p>Alphas shouldn&#8217;t be perfect. They don&#8217;t have to be gorgeous, or rich, or in the ultimate physical condition to be alpha. Alpha has nothing to do with looks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nope, the alpha hero is about the guy&#8217;s attitude, his personal moral code, how he treats others and how he treats himself.\u00a0 It has nothing to do with being a domineering ass, and sadly, that&#8217;s the way a lot of supposedly alpha heroes come off. Most of the heroes I&#8217;ve enjoyed the most in romances have a little of alpha, a little of beta in them.\u00a0 Alpha because they are generally confident, they&#8217;ll lay down their lives to protect those they love, they aren&#8217;t afraid to fight.\u00a0 Beta, because they aren&#8217;t perfect and they know that.\u00a0 They know they may not always be right and they accept that.\u00a0 They make mistakes, they have a sense of humor, they aren&#8217;t afraid to realize that they have emotions and they aren&#8217;t convinced that just because they have a penis, it means they know everything. They aren&#8217;t so arrogant that if I ever met their real life double that I&#8217;d just as soon strangle them as look at them.\u00a0 They might even have some of those insecurities that make them seem real.<\/p>\n<p>Very few writers can write a domineering alpha male and still reel me in enough that I love the book.\u00a0 Lora Leigh is one of them-her heroes are <em>pure<\/em> alpha, no doubt about it.\u00a0 If I ever met one of her <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/loraleigh.com\/books.html#Breeds\">Breeds<\/a>, I&#8217;d be tempted to dump sugar in his gas tank, Nair in his shampoo, or maybe even just strangle him.\u00a0 Make no mistake, I love to read about them, but put in a room with a guy who just bowls over everybody and expects me to tolerate it&#8230;..hmmmmmm&#8230;. nooooooo. No, no, no.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another alpha, although a much smoother alpha,\u00a0 would be <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.noraroberts.com\/jdrobbbooks.htm\">Roarke<\/a> from the JD Robb books.\u00a0 As much as I love the Robb books, I wouldn&#8217;t want Roarke in my life for anything.\u00a0 He&#8217;s too perfect.\u00a0 Being around that much perfection would only highlight my own flaws and I&#8217;m all too aware of them.<\/p>\n<p>Lora Leigh&#8217;s Breeds and JD Robb&#8217;s Roarke are a couple examples of the ultimate alpha hero, or at least to me, but not too many writers can pull it off like they do.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve read books where it seems authors are trying to mimic the intensity of Lora&#8217;s Breeds.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve read books where a suave, sexy millionaire comes onto the scene and he&#8217;s oh so perfect in pretty much every way, and while that is basically Roarke&#8217;s profile, they don&#8217;t appeal to me in the same way Roarke does.<\/p>\n<p>Alpha heroes are a lot of fun to read, if the author does it right.\u00a0 But don&#8217;t try to mimic somebody&#8217;s success because it can&#8217;t be done.\u00a0 Nobody else can write a hero like one of the Breeds.\u00a0 Nobody else will ever create another Roarke.\u00a0 Instead of shooting for the ult in alphas, I think some writers would be better off creating a more realistic hero-even in the paranormal crazed market we&#8217;re in.\u00a0 Give him a little less intensity.\u00a0 Give him flaws.\u00a0 Give him a sense of humor and give him some hang ups.\u00a0 I tend to relate to the heroines when I read and if the heroine is less than perfect and the hero is just so shiny and pretty and wonderful, it&#8217;s probably going to lessen my enjoyment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Picture found at Wikipedia Eliot Stabler-the alpha hero, as far as I&#8217;m concerned.\u00a0 No, I&#8217;m not in lust with him and I don&#8217;t drool over<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2007\/03\/the-alpha-hero\/\" class=\"more-link\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;The Alpha Hero&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"facebook_10161045129738658_54762468447":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_bluesky_dont_syndicate":"","_bluesky_syndication_accounts":"","_bluesky_syndication_text":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[61],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5099","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-writing"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
