\"hunters-salvation.jpg\"<\/a>I got an email late Thursday from my editor.\u00a0 She’d just finished the read thru on Hunter’s Salvation<\/a>.\u00a0 She was happy with it.\u00a0 I always worry about that.\u00a0 Half of my stuff, okay, most of my stuff, I think sucks.\u00a0 I’m rarely satisfied with them so I don’t expect others to be.\u00a0 But that’s just one of my paranoias and has nothing to do with my post.<\/p>\n

She was satisfied with it, but she wanted to know if I could maybe add this to the last chapter and expand on that in the last chapter.\u00a0 Yep. I can do th<\/a>at.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I ended up <\/a>rewriting most of the last chapter before I was satisfied. \u00a0One thing I kept was the closing line, though.\u00a0 I had to juggle this and reaarange that and thrown the other part out altogether, but I made it work because I really wanted to keep that very last line the same.\u00a0 I got it turned back in by Friday and she was very happy with the changes, so I’ll sleep a little better.\u00a0 Maybe.<\/p>\n

But in the middle of the rewrite, going from (I think) a twelve page chapter to a twenty something page chapter, I did my normal blog hopping on Fridays.\u00a0 Fridays, I don’t always hit too many blogs.\u00a0 I glance at RTB<\/a>, I look at Sybil<\/a>‘s, I check the vamps and scamps<\/a>, sometimes I drop by Jaci’<\/a>s but most of the blogs I lurk on.\u00a0 The one blog I read faithfully pretty much every day is PBW<\/a>.\u00a0 I’ll shamelessly admit I’m a PBW junkie and have been for a while.<\/p>\n

PBW\u00a0had a question on her Friday 20<\/a>\u00a0about wrapping a book up.\u00a0 Since I spent most of Friday re-wrapping a book, so to speak, that one got me to thinking.\u00a0 Wrapping up a book can be tricky.\u00a0 Sometimes, the book is flowing so well, I get to that last chapter and think, excellent, almost done… and then whap.\u00a0 I freeze.\u00a0 The last few pages just won’t come.\u00a0 Or I’ll be struggling along with a book, dreading the ending and whaddya know… that last chapter was the easiest part.<\/p>\n

She recommended mirroring something that had happened earlier in the book. I’ve done that.\u00a0 Tying up some small, almost insignificant detail…yep, I’ve done that.\u00a0 Unconsciously, though.\u00a0 Those endings are the ones that come when I least expect it.\u00a0 When I’ve been fighting the characters almost the entire story.\u00a0 It’s almost like a present when the ending comes that easy.\u00a0 Which I guess is why I was determined to keep that last line in\u00a0Hunter’s Salvation<\/em>.\u00a0 I fought with that bastard<\/strike>, I mean the hero throughout the entire book and when I finally wrote that very last line, I heaved a major sigh of relief.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A lot of people I know will read the first line of a book before they decide to buy.\u00a0 That makes that first line soooo important.\u00a0 But after fighting with last lines as much as I have, I know the last line(or lines) is just as important.<\/p>\n

(Eve)\u00a0 “The least I can do after standing you up tonight is make you feel manly.”<\/em><\/p>\n

(Roarke) “The very least,” he agreed.<\/em><\/p>\n

From Surviving Demon Island<\/u> by Jaci Burton If she could that, she could do anything. Bring on the demons.<\/em><\/p>\n

And one of my absolute faves, From Seven Up<\/u> by Janet Evanovich<\/p>\n

Ranger removed his gunbelt and dropped it on the floor.\u00a0 “DeChooch is fine, but <\/em>we have unfinished business.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Yep, a good closing line (or lines) is a gift. If\u00a0it’s a series, it should leave the reader practically dying for the next book.\u00a0 A good last line\u00a0should leave the reader smiling (well, if it’s a romance…ideally, a smile works for me no matter what the genre, though)\u00a0 and feeling satisfied with the book.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
