My book is <\/em><strong>brilliant<\/strong><em>. BRILLIANT, I TELL YOU<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see the spiels run the gamut from the author baring her tender, delicate feelings on twitter, to being <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"n absolute sideshow crazy piece of work like Kathleen Hale (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/p\/author-kathleen-hale-admitted-to-stalking-a-goodreads-user-now-she-has-a-book-deal-about-it-15649240\" target=\"_blank\">an absolute sideshow crazy piece of work like Kathleen Hale<\/a>, who <em>fricking stalked a reviewer over a review<\/em>, showing up at the woman&#8217;s <em>home<\/em>. FYI, the link doesn&#8217;t go to the author&#8217;s site, but to an article by Bustle that details the bullshit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve talked about the craptastic behavior on the parts of some (almost always new, almost always female and almost always younger) authors who see a one star review or read a less than stellar one and <em>they flip out<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it&#8217;s <em>always<\/em> the same basic routine&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Author sees the review or rating<\/li><li>Author freaks out<\/li><li>Author goes on a rampage about the one star, sometimes screenshotting or calling the reviewer out directly or just weeping brave silent tears&#8230; publicly&#8230; so people can see her tribulations<\/li><li>Some do rush to pet and stroke and soothe the soul of the poor, wounded author<\/li><li>Author continues to devolve and clutch her pearls<\/li><li>People tell author she&#8217;s being overdramatic at best, an idiot or spoiled diva at worst<\/li><li>Author now feels like a victim because people don&#8217;t understand <em>how terribly she&#8217;s been wronged because somebody didn&#8217;t LOVE HER PRECIOUS BABY<\/em><\/li><li>Author lashes out against those who have pointed out the one star <em>isn&#8217;t that big a deal<\/em><\/li><li>Author digs a deeper hole<\/li><li>Clapback gets worse<\/li><li>Author goes quiet<\/li><li>Very often, author deletes posts or tweets or blogs like nothing ever happened<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I mean, this plays out over and over and over&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was the Kathleen Hale incident that, really, <em>defines<\/em> a diva author having a tantrum and <em>why you shouldn&#8217;t freak out over reviews<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are also incidents that led to <em>these<\/em> posts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2014\/04\/i-feel-the-need-to-repost-on-negative-reviews-and-think-of-the-unicorns\/\" target=\"_blank\">On negative reviews and unicorns<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2012\/01\/you-shouldnt-post-negative-reviews\/\">You shouldn&#8217;t post negative reviews<\/a>!<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2010\/08\/thursday-tips-bad-reviews\/\">Bad reviews<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These things never turn out in a positive way for the author(s) involved, because after showing their asses in public in such a fashion, they end up on plenty of <strong>NEVER TO BE READ <\/strong>lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But&#8230;yesterday, I saw one of these boring old <em>one star reviews will ruin me<\/em> dramas take on a new twist! Much drama! Big Excite!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tweets from the author ended up getting deleted but, as typical, there were some individuals that rushed to soothe\/pet\/stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And <em>one<\/em> had this brilliant (<em>meaning very very stupid<\/em>) idea&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"627\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/reviewersareevilBAH.png?resize=627%2C175&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tweet suggesting that unless readers can prove purchase, they shouldn't be able to review a book.\n\nSeriously. What kind of BS is this?\" class=\"wp-image-45960\"\/><figcaption>Seriously. What kind of BS is this?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naturally, there was some clapback. Somebody asked about libraries or friends borrowing books. And we got this response from the genius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"633\" height=\"223\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/reviewersaresoevilBAH.png?resize=633%2C223&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tweet suggesting that people who borrow books are taking money from authors unless they buy or review the book.\n\nThen it suggests trolls can kill a book dead.\" class=\"wp-image-45961\"\/><figcaption>I suspect this writer wannabe is going to have a harder time getting people to review future books.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then we end up with this&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"317\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/reviewers-are-so-evil-BAH.png?resize=765%2C317&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tweet suggesting authors push for a  'no purchase, no review' rule, with a poll to gauge thoughts of others.  His opinion isn't the popular one.\" class=\"wp-image-45962\"\/><figcaption>Really. <br>Suggesting action that unless a reader can prove <br>PROOF OF PURCHASE&#8230;then no review.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay, folks. If you made it through all of that&#8230; and your eyeballs haven&#8217;t rolled out of your head, then you deserve some cookies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for the newby writers reading this? Just keep in mind&#8230;.you&#8217;ll get negative reviews. They won&#8217;t kill you. We <em>all<\/em> get them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making an ass of yourself, though? Well, bloggers and reviewers and librarians can be a huge ally in this dodgy, crazy world.
