It amused me, satisfied\nsomething in me I hadn\u2019t even known existed and I found myself giving him a\nlook of wide-eyed confusion and the sort of puzzled smile Bianca liked to give\npeople when she was about to teach them a lesson in what she called Smart-Ass\n101. \u201cI really couldn\u2019t say because I\u2019m not familiar with your line of work, Mr.\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He snarled, then abruptly\nstarted to laugh. \u201cYou hid that sarcastic bitch very well. Call me Spectre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs that a first or last\nname?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNeither.\u201d He shot me a level\nlook. \u201cAnd I expect you know it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of answering, I\nlooked back out the window. I did it in time to see a sign, green and white,\nmarked with the upcoming cities. \u201cWhere are we going?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019d rather not tell you\nthat,\u201d he said softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A headache started to pulse\nbehind my eyes and I pinched the bridge of my nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen are you going to let me\ncall my brother?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have a secure sat phone at\nour target destination. I\u2019ll call him from there and you can speak to him\nbriefly.\u201d He shot me a narrow look before returning his attention back to the\nroad. \u201cYou\u2019re not allowed to give him any information about where we are. I\u2019ll\nend the call the second you try.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPerhaps you should try\ncouching that in some other terms, Casper,\u201d I said sharply. \u201cI don\u2019t respond to\nnot allowed<\/em> very well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was quiet for a long, long\nmoment, so long that I shifted in my seat to give him a wary look. He had a\npuzzled frown on his face and after a few seconds, he asked, \u201cWhy did you call\nme Casper?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSpectre\u2026ghost.\u201d I waved at\nhim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not following.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I blinked. \u201cAre you serious?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t I be? What does\nSpectre, or ghost, have to do with the name Casper<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWere you dropped onto this\nplanet by aliens?\u201d I asked. \u201cOr have you never seen cartoons before?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My first comment had teased\nthe start of a smile from him, but by the time I finished talking, the smile\nhad faded. And unless I was mistaken, there was a faint but unmistakable\ntension now, in the strong line of his lean shoulders, in the forearms, left\nbare by the rolled-up sleeves of a plain denim workshirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy childhood didn\u2019t allow\nmuch time to indulge in cartoons, I\u2019m afraid,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were entire untold\nstories there, delivered in those simple words, in his bland, emotionless\nvoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for some reason, they\nleft a strange ache in my chest. No, <\/em>I told myself. He can\u2019t make\nthings in your chest ache, damn it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s kind of sad. Explains\na lot, though.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I directed my attention back\nto the front window and stared at the filthy back doors of a semitruck.\nSomebody had scrawled a giant smiley face through the dirt. Casually, I looked\nat the license plate and committed it to memory, then noted the time on the\nclock. It wasn\u2019t much of a reference point but if I could get enough licenses\nstored in my memory, and a rough idea of the time, I\u2019d have something to give\nmy brother. I didn\u2019t know how I\u2019d pass the information on, but I\u2019d worry about\nthat later. Right now, I needed to focus on creating a moving path of\nbreadcrumbs across the middle of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat does it explain?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His voice distracted me.\nIrritated, I looked away from the green Hyundai I\u2019d picked out even as I\u2019d\ntried to more carefully form a plan. Still in its abstract, the idea fell apart\nand I scowled at him. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe cartoons I\u2019ve never\nwatched. What does it explain?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time there was<\/em>\nsomething in his voice, an odd, almost wistful sort of curiosity and damn if\nthat didn\u2019t make that ache in my chest expand. Irritated even more, I crossed\nmy arms over my chest and glared at the filthy semi with enough intensity that\nmy will alone should have melted through the steel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s easy. It explains why\nyou have more in common with a droid than a person. What kind of kid doesn\u2019t\nhave time to indulge in cartoons<\/em>? Was your daddy too busy trying to\nbuild you into the ultimate assassin or something?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spectre\u2019s mouth tightened.\n\u201cNo, Tia. His intentions were to make me into the ultimate monster. That\u2019s even\nworse than an assassin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ache in my chest was gone\nnow, replaced by an awful cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wished I hadn\u2019t flung that last bit out at him. But it was too late to take it back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
