It wasn\u2019t a long drive back to Asheville. Maybe an hour. But it seemed to take the entire day. He\u2019d spent that interminably long drive practicing what he\u2019d say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019d been an ass. He\nwas sorry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They weren\u2019t\nexclusive but he\u2019d no right to treat her that way and he was sorry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And maybe\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His gut knotted up\njust thinking about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he needed to do\nsomething.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides, sometimes,\nwhen he\u2019d see Lacey at the club, when she was talking to some of the guys she\nknew, even though it was just casual, he had these moments where his brain just\nwanted to explode. Where he wanted to grab anybody who was even near her and\njust pummel them bloody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was it a bad thing,\nreally, to have a real relationship with her?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would make her\nhappy. It would maybe fix the awful, ugly rift he\u2019d put between them. And he\nwouldn\u2019t have to worry about that cold, nasty dread that was spreading through\nhim\u2026that feeling that he was losing her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lights of\nAsheville gleamed ahead and it wasn\u2019t too long before he was able to turn onto\nthe street of Lush and Lace, the little shop her friend Rocki owned. Lacey\nmodeled some of the corsets, handled the one-of-a-kind photo shoots for the\nstore\u2019s popular website and maintained the tech aspects as well, plus worked at\nthe store three days a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brogan hadn\u2019t been\nhere more than two or three times, but he knew all about it. Maybe he could\npick a few things out for her. He loved the lingerie they sold, loved seeing it\non her, loved taking it off her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Checking the time,\nhe saw it was close to five. The store closed early on Sundays. That was good.\nHe could ask her on a date. They could go out and he would make it up to\nher\u2014hurting her the way he had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They would talk\nand\u2026he would fumble his way through the apology. He sucked at apologies because\nhe so rarely offered them. Unless the person mattered, he didn\u2019t bother with\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Lacey was the\nfirst person to really matter in a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everybody is out\nto screw you over\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He just hoped Lacey\nhad missed him half as much as he\u2019d missed her. It would make it easier to\nsmooth things over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was nervous. It\npissed him off, but there wasn\u2019t much to be done for it. It wasn\u2019t an unusual\nthing with Lacey, though. He\u2019d never been on entirely level footing with Lacey.\nHe\u2019d always felt a little less in control, a little less sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the main\nreason he\u2019d kept her at a distance. Seeing her, though, the thought of it had\nalways left him excited, hot\u2026more. She did things to him, made him wish for\nthings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it wasn\u2019t ever\nlike this. He hadn\u2019t ever really worried that he might lose her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Losing Lacey\u2026 That\nwas just unthinkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLike hell.\u201d He\nwasn\u2019t going to lose her. With that in mind, he stormed into the store. They\u2019d\nhave it out, and they\u2019d do it now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shoving open the\ndoor, he had his mouth open to say\u2026something. But it wasn\u2019t Lacey behind the\ncounter. It was Rocki and she didn\u2019t look at all sick. For a second, he just\nstared at her, his mind spinning. And although he already knew, he found\nhimself asking, \u201cWhat are you doing here? I thought you were sick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSick?\u201d Rocki lifted\na brow at him. Her mouth curled in an amused little smirk. \u201cWell, I was feeling\nfine, right up until I saw your face, asshole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sighing, he skimmed\na hand back over his naked scalp. \u201cOkay, I deserve that.\u201d Taking a deep breath,\nhe said, \u201cLacey told me she was covering for you because you were sick. I\u2019d\nasked her to come to the cabin with me. I guess it was too much to ask for her\nto just be honest and say she didn\u2019t want to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou think you\ndeserve that? You treat her like shit but you deserve honesty from her?\nRespect?\u201d Rocki sauntered out from behind the counter. She wore boots, the\nheels tall enough to put her eye to eye with him. Her dark-brown eyes glinted\nwith heat and disgust as she stared at him. \u201cYou know, I really don\u2019t get what\nshe sees in you, you stupid ass.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRocki\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She shook her head.\n\u201cShut up. I don\u2019t want to hear it. She\u2019s into you\u2014I know that. But I don\u2019t know\nwhy. All you do is hurt her. You\u2019ve done it for the past two years and if she\u2019d\nstayed around, you\u2019d keep on doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He narrowed his eyes\nat her. \u201cI don\u2019t hurt her. And what we do is none of your damn business\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI said shut up,\u201d\nshe snarled, leaning in until she was no more than an inch from his face. \u201cYou\nthink I give a damn what the two of you do behind closed doors? She likes her\nsex rough. Fine. Yippee. As long as she\u2019s into it and you don\u2019t do anything she\ndoesn\u2019t want? Have fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She spun away and\nstalked toward the counter. There, she turned around\nand leaned back, crossing her arms over her chest, eyeing him as though he were\nsomething she would scrape off the bottom of her boot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou hurt her,\u201d she\nsaid again, her voice low, all but vibrating. \u201cAll the damn time. Every time I\nthink the two of you might actually be making a go of it, you do something\nstupid and I want to shake her <\/em>because she just puts up with\nit. You were at the club with her the other night\u2014she looked as happy as I\u2019d\never seen her, and then she goes to the bathroom and within thirty seconds,\nthat bitch Grace is hanging all over you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, wait a minute\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rocki shoved off the\ncounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDidin\u2019t I already tell <\/em>you to shut the fuck up?\u201d she snapped.\n\u201cDo it or I will smash that ugly face of yours in. You come into my store after\nbreaking my friend\u2019s heart, you will hear what I have to say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brogan blinked,\ncaught off guard. Rocki had claws\u2014he\u2019d always known that. It was part of why\nshe and Lacey got along so well. Both of them had a streak of mean a mile wide.\nBut he hadn\u2019t had too many women threaten to\u2026how did she put it? Yeah, threaten\nto smash his face in. Running his tongue across his teeth, he rocked back on\nhis heels and waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care if you\ntwo have an open relationship and I don\u2019t care if you and Grace go way back,\u201d\nRocki said, her eyes glinting. \u201cI<\/em> go way back with Lacey. And you\ntreated her like shit. I was the one watching her try not to cry after you\nhumiliated her. So if I want to call you an ass and that woman a bitch, I damn\nwell will. You don\u2019t deserve Lacey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brogan set his jaw\nand shifted his attention past her to stare at the wall. There was an unframed\nprint mounted there, the woman in a shimmering bronze corset, vivid, red-gold\ncurls spiraling down her back, her hands gracefully tying the laces. The viewer\ncouldn\u2019t see the model\u2019s face, but he knew who it was. Lacey. He stared at the\nprint for a long, long moment before he finally shifted his attention to Rocki\nand said gruffly, \u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou know.\u201d Rocki\narched a brow. She paced forward, that look of acute dislike still on her face.\n\u201cSo\u2026you wanted to take her to the cabin. You broke her heart. You humiliated\nher, and then you called and offered to take her to the cabin. Let me guess,\nyou thought taking her away for a romantic getaway, fucking her brains out for\na few days would make it all better?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There really wasn\u2019t\nany way to respond to that, Brogan decided. So he stayed silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing to say\nnow?\u201d Rocki asked mockingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou seem to be dead\nset on saying it all.\u201d He rubbed his hands over his face and turned away. He\nhad to fix this. \u201cLook, I\u2019ve screwed up, a hundred times, a thousand times. But\nI do care about her, and I\u2019m going to fix this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah.\u201d She snorted.\n\u201cGood luck with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He shot her a dirty\nlook. \u201cI\u2019m not giving her up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToo late. She\u2019s\ngiven up on you.\u201d A cat\u2019s smile curled her lips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He opened his mouth\nand then just snapped it shut, shaking his head as he headed for the door. He\ndidn\u2019t have time to play Rocki\u2019s games. He had to find Lacey and start fixing\nthis. As he hit the door, he paused and looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rocki stood there,\nstill watching him with a smirk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something about the\nlook in her eyes should have warned him. But he was so determined to get to\nLacey, he just wasn\u2019t thinking clearly. All he could think about was the fact\nthat he had to fix this. Had to make Lacey understand that he hadn\u2019t done\nanything to hurt her, not intentionally, at least\u2014that he was just screwed up\nand he needed time to level out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019d\nunderstand\u2026right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u221e \u221e \u221e<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lacey lived in a\nredesigned loft across town. It acted as both studio and home. It was\nmeticulously neat, rarely a thing out of place in his experience. But this\nwas\u2026unreal. After he\u2019d used his key to let himself in, he found himself\nstanding in the middle of the main room, staring at\u2026nothing. Her things were\ngone. Logically, he knew what that meant. But he wasn\u2019t letting himself admit\nit. Not yet. She couldn\u2019t be gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019d only left town\non Friday. He\u2019d been gone two damn nights<\/em>. Two nights. He couldn\u2019t\nhave been so fucking stupid as to let her leave him like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except the evidence\nwas right in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right<\/em> in\nfront of him\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was gone.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hurling his keys\nacross the empty cavern of a room, he stormed into the kitchen and hit the\nlights. The glass-fronted cabinets revealed empty shelves. The refrigerator was\nempty. The pantry was empty. The bathroom had none of the numerous soaps and\nlotions she loved. Everything was gone. Her bedroom\u2026the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, in the\nextra bedroom that she rarely used, he lucked out and found some sign of life.\nAs in boxes. A number of them. Packed up as if ready for storage. The sight of\nit was like a fist to his chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stunned, he leaned\nagainst the door frame. She was gone\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hearing the familiar\nsound of a door opening, he turned. Lacey\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking off down the\nhall, heart racing, he came to an abrupt stop. The man in front of him wasn\u2019t\nwho he wanted to see. Cole Stanton, Rocki\u2019s fianc\u00e9, stood there, his hands in\nhis pockets and an appraising look on his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not here.\u201d\nCole\u2014the master of understatement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI see that,\u201d Brogan\nsnapped. \u201cWhere the hell is she?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other man\nshrugged. \u201cThat\u2019s not for me to say. I just promised to make sure things got\nmoved into storage. She\u2019s subletting her loft for a while and I need to get\nthis stuff put away before the new tenant moves in next week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New tenant\u2026 <\/em>Brogan\u2019s\nstomach dropped to his knees. This\u2026shit. This wasn\u2019t a temporary thing. She\nwouldn\u2019t be giving up her place if she was coming back any time soon. \u201cDamn it,\nwhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy do you care?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brogan stalked\nacross the floor and reached out, fisting his hand in the other man\u2019s shirt. He\nhauled him close until just a few breaths separated them. \u201cIf you don\u2019t tell me\nwhere she is, I\u2019m going to pummel that pretty face of yours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tight smile curled Cole\u2019s face. \u201cYou can try.\u201d Then Cole\u2019s hands shot out and, with surprising ease, he broke Brogan\u2019s hold. After he\u2019d moved a few feet away, he smoothed his polo shirt down and pushed a hand through his hair. Just like that, the pretty boy looked like he was ready to step onto the cover of\u00a0GQ<\/em>. \u201cHere\u2019s the deal, Brogan\u2026 You want to go a round with me? I\u2019m game. I\u2019d love to hurt you some for what you did to Lacey. But I\u2019m not telling you shit. Go put that fancy-ass security firm of yours to use or figure it out on your own. Lacey\u00a0left\u00a0<\/em>you. You treated her like shit and she needed to be away from you. If you don\u2019t like that, then I suggest you start figuring out what the problem is, fix it and then go after her. Because if you can\u2019t fix it? You don\u2019t deserve her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
