Broken 3.02.2010<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

With his belly rumbling a reminder at him, he sauntered down the walkway and followed it around the house. His nostrils flared and he caught the scent of something absolutely divine\u2014spaghetti. The lady was making spaghetti and when she made spaghetti, she also had homemade garlic bread.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, Quinn was damn glad he hadn\u2019t hung around after he\u2019d turned over Blanford. If he\u2019d been given another job, he would have missed out on what was rapidly becoming his favorite meal, with a woman who was rapidly becoming one of his favorite people\u2014and that was no small feat. Quinn could count the people he really liked on one hand. Until Theresa had smilingly bowled him over, he would have had a finger left over after he counted up his friends.<\/p>\n

He opened the door\u2014<\/p>\n

And stopped dead in his tracks as somebody all but fell into his arms. Somebody\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. a woman. And not<\/em> Theresa.<\/p>\n

He caught her just above her elbows, automatically steadying her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she said, her voice soft and low.<\/p>\n

Then she lifted her face and Quinn found himself gazing into the biggest, brownest eyes he\u2019d ever seen in his life. Feeling a little dazed, he studied her face while she stammered out another apology.<\/p>\n

Quinn barely heard it.<\/p>\n

He was too busy staring at her mouth. A very pretty mouth, a cupid\u2019s bow slicked with deep, vibrant red. Under his hands, he could feel silken smooth skin and unable to resist, he stroked a thumb along her inner arm.<\/p>\n

Her skin was soft, soft and warm\u2014the creamiest, most flawless skin imaginable. Her shoulder-length hair was a shade caught between blonde and brown, nondescript, but for some reason, he found himself thinking about tangling his fingers in that hair and holding her head still while he kissed that red-slicked mouth.<\/p>\n

Well, hello<\/em> .\u00a0.\u00a0. he could all but feel his libido kicking up as he stared at that mouth. Every last one of his senses tuned in on her\u2014<\/p>\n

The way she looked\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. sex and sin.<\/p>\n

The way she smelled\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. sex and sin.<\/p>\n

The way she sounded\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. sex and sin.<\/p>\n

The way she felt\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. the way she might taste. He knew it without a doubt. She\u2019d taste like sex and sin.<\/p>\n

His mouth was all but watering.<\/p>\n

\u201cAhhh\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. excuse me,\u201d she said, tugging against his light hold.<\/p>\n

\u201cUh\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. yeah.\u201d He uncurled his fingers and let go, although he hated every second of it.<\/p>\n

She immediately backed away, putting a good five feet between them and eying him nervously. In that moment, he was acutely aware of the fact that he hadn\u2019t bothered shaving that morning, or the morning before. He was also acutely aware of the wrinkled state of his gray T-shirt and the jeans he wore. He\u2019d finally gotten into the habit of wearing the unofficial uniform\u2014a black shirt with Bond Enforcement<\/em> printed on the front and back, and either jeans or black fatigues\u2014worn by most of the guys who worked for Gearing.\u00a0\u00a0 He wore the Bond<\/em> shirts for work, but usually changed before leaving. Wearing those particular shirts outside of work had ended up causing him a headache or two.<\/p>\n

She continued to stare at him, her face expressionless and her eyes measuring. She might have just continued to stare at him indefinitely if Theresa hadn\u2019t come bustling down the hall. \u201cQuinn?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tearing his eyes away from the unknown woman, he smiled at his landlord. It no longer seemed so weird to smile at somebody\u2014as in he didn\u2019t worry his face might crack if he wasn\u2019t careful. Still, the smile on his face did feel odd. \u201cHey, Theresa. I didn\u2019t know you had company.\u201d<\/p>\n

She beamed at him. \u201cThis isn\u2019t company. This is your new neighbor. She just moved in to the upstairs apartment. Sara\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. I\u2019d like you to meet Quinn Rafferty. Quinn, this is Sara Davis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sara.<\/em><\/p>\n

Neighbor.<\/em><\/p>\n

Staring into Sara\u2019s dark brown eyes, his heart sank just a little. Great.<\/em><\/p>\n

Some people collected books.<\/p>\n

Collected knickknacks, or coins.<\/p>\n

Theresa collected lost souls, as evidenced by the fact that he was living in her basement after she\u2019d charmed him into changing her tire outside Dierburg\u2019s a few months earlier.<\/p>\n

The last person to stay in that apartment had been a battered woman hiding out from her ex. Before that, it had been a girl who\u2019d been all of nineteen, with two kids and a third on the way. When that one left, she\u2019d stolen from Theresa and skipped out on the piddling amount of rent.<\/p>\n

If Sara Davis was living in Theresa\u2019s upstairs apartment that made her pretty much off limits. It didn\u2019t matter that his dormant sex drive was all of sudden flaring up on him.<\/p>\n

The last thing Quinn needed to be around was another lost soul, not when he still struggled to find his own.<\/p>\n
