{"id":4478,"date":"2010-02-28T00:00:20","date_gmt":"2010-02-28T04:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shilohwalker.wordpress.com\/?p=4478"},"modified":"2010-02-28T00:00:20","modified_gmt":"2010-02-28T04:00:20","slug":"reading-pet-peeves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2010\/02\/reading-pet-peeves\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading Pet Peeves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We all have them, right?\u00a0 Something that will just grate on your nerves when you&#8217;re reading?<\/p>\n<p>And sometimes they are annoying enough that you just give up reading the book?<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of mine&#8230;in no particular order.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Branding\/labeling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><strong>Too many fricking <\/strong>labels\/brand names dropped in the span of so many pages.\u00a0 If I can&#8217;t turn three pages without having a ferragamo, a prado, a ferrari, heineken, escalades or cadillacs smacking me up across the face&#8230;sometimes two or three times on any one page, chances are I&#8217;m going to be so distracted by that, I&#8217;m going to be hardpressed to tell you what&#8217;s going on in the story. Which means&#8230;I&#8217;m going to probably stop reading the story.\u00a0 Unless those clothing, the shoes, the cars or the booze are crucial to the plot?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t need the name brands or labels or the pricey manufacturers.\u00a0 Really.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Powers that make no sense<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\">I can suspend disbelief while reading.\u00a0 Really, I can.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t honestly think a 6 ft tall guy can really turn into a 7 ft werewolf.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t.\u00a0 Nor do I believe in vampires.\u00a0 But I want the writer to <em>sell<\/em> me the story in a believable fashion.\u00a0 That means&#8230; I want any powers to make sense.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Think of it like this&#8230;a guy can be a natural athlete.\u00a0 But that doesn&#8217;t mean he walk onto the slopes and automatically win a gold medal in skiing, right?\u00a0 With no training?\u00a0 He has to train.\u00a0 And if he&#8217;s never skiied?\u00a0 He needs to know how.\u00a0 So if there&#8217;s a person with special power in a book and they come by them all of a sudden, one thing that will annoy the hell out of me is if they can suddenly use that special power like a pro within like&#8230;oh, say&#8230;five pages.\u00a0\u00a0 Even fifty.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Big<\/em> does not equal <em>sexy<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\">Now I don&#8217;t really care what the hero looks like in the book.\u00a0 As long as he&#8217;s given some sort of appeal&#8211;I can fill the blanks just fine on my own if you give me some starting points.\u00a0\u00a0 I like a smile.\u00a0 A laugh.\u00a0 The way he watches the heroine, or the way he moves.\u00a0 A sense of humor.\u00a0 How he laughs.\u00a0 Something. \u00a0 How he looks definitely plays into it, but <em>big<\/em> doesn&#8217;t translate to sexy.\u00a0 I actually prefer leaner men myself, so unless there is something else worked into the story about the hero-his mannerisms, his smile, his attitude, humor&#8230;<em>something<\/em>, when I read <em>big<\/em>, if the writer hasn&#8217;t given me something else to help form a picture of the guy&#8230;well, I just tend to flash to memories of Andre the Giant.\u00a0 Which means&#8230; I often end up tossing a book aside.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overly independent heroines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\">Actually, this could work for heroes, too, I guess, but for some reason, it seems like heroines are the ones who end up going out and doing something so fricking stupid, in the name of &#8216;I&#8217;m my own person&#8217; or whatever, that in real life, could get them killed, or somebody else hurt.\u00a0 I&#8217;m all for independence.\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty independent myself-would much rather do things <em>my<\/em> way that have somebody help me and do it the <em>wrong<\/em> way, or even have to <em>explain<\/em> the right way.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t like asking for help, etc, etc, etc.\u00a0 But if there&#8217;s a situation where it&#8217;s clear that if I don&#8217;t get help, it&#8217;s going to A) put my life at risk\u00a0 B) put somebody else&#8217;s life at risk\u00a0 C) put property\/sanity\/money\/important stuff at risk, well, you can damn well bet I&#8217;d ask for help.\u00a0 <em>Not<\/em> doing it is stupid.\u00a0 And I don&#8217;t like stupid crap.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\">\n<p>So there are some of my reading pet peeves.\u00a0 What are yours?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We all have them, right?\u00a0 Something that will just grate on your nerves when you&#8217;re reading?
