She wanted to curl up on the chair close to the front door and read a book with light streaming in over her shoulder from the window. Hell, she even wanted to wake up and stare at the cheerfully yellow walls.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted to come to a place that could actually feel like <em>home<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really is lovely, but I\u2019m afraid I can\u2019t afford it.\u201d It wasn\u2019t a lie\u2014she <em>could<\/em> just barely manage the monthly payments, and she wouldn\u2019t even have to dip into her precious stash of cash. But she couldn\u2019t afford the other things that would come with taking the apartment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps if we made it three hundred\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. and you could help me in the gardens from time to time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sara shook her head. \u201cNo, I\u2019m sorry.\u201d She started for the door.<\/p>\n<p>She had her hand on the doorknob when Theresa spoke again. \u201cYou\u2019d be safe here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sara froze. Every muscle in her back tensed up and she took a deep breath, consciously made herself relax and give Theresa a puzzled smile. \u201cI\u2019m sorry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard me, darling.\u201d Theresa sighed and the happy, contented mask on her face fell away, revealing a woman who looked as if she understood worry\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. fear. \u201cYou\u2019d be safe. You can pay me in cash and I don\u2019t need to run a credit check, I won\u2019t ask for identification. There is no security deposit\u2014the only thing I ask is that you not steal anything from me when it\u2019s time for you to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breath was trapped in her lungs. She didn\u2019t even realize she\u2019d stopped breathing until her chest started to ache. Releasing a pent-up breath, she collapsed back against the door and stared at Theresa. \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>God, does she know? Did I give myself away\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. <\/em>how<em>?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As though she knew every thought running through Sara\u2019s mind, Theresa shook her head. \u201cDon\u2019t worry, Sara. I don\u2019t know who you are and I don\u2019t know why you\u2019re running or what you\u2019re running from. But you <em>are<\/em> running. Aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you think I\u2019m running from something, the last thing you should do is offer me a place to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, sweetheart\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. not everybody runs away because they\u2019ve done something wrong.
