He tried hard not to think about what he was doing. Why.<\/p>\n<p>He tried hard not to think about the still body that lay in the shallow grave at his feet. If he thought about it too much, he was going to lose his mind. He had a fragile hold on sanity and he knew it wouldn\u2019t take much to snap.<\/p>\n<p>But he couldn\u2019t <em>not<\/em> think. Couldn\u2019t <em>not <\/em>remember.<\/p>\n<p>Elena was dead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Trust me<\/em>,\u201d she had whispered to him. She had given him that serene, enigmatic smile and kissed him, stroked a hand down his chest and murmured, \u201c<em>Trust me, Quinn. I will do this\u2014one more time. One last time. I have to<\/em>.\u201d<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d been right\u2014she\u2019d done it one last time\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. and it had gotten her killed. Now her last words haunted him. Even as he\u2019d left her alone in the hellhole dive where they\u2019d met to exchange information, he\u2019d wanted to go back to her. Go back, demand that she stop. Demand that she come with him.<\/p>\n<p>Quinn had no idea how he\u2019d possibly have gotten Elena out of Colombia, but he would have worked something out. Broken whatever laws necessary, kept her with him.<\/p>\n<p>But she\u2019d told him to trust her.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou look at me like you want to be with me, but you do not trust me. How can I be with a man who cannot trust me?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It was something she\u2019d asked him months ago\u2014yet more words to haunt him.<\/p>\n<p>It was quiet in the forest, the air hot and heavy. He worked in the dark, because he couldn\u2019t risk somebody discovering him. Not that he feared they would\u2014he almost hoped that would happen soon. But not until he\u2019d taken care of Elena first. Then his team. Had to make sure the team was safe.<\/p>\n<p>Fuck, by rights, he should be doing that <em>now<\/em>. A Ranger didn\u2019t leave his team hanging.<\/p>\n<p>But a man couldn\u2019t leave the woman he lo\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShit.\u201d He drove his stolen shovel into the ground and covered his face with grimy, bloodstained hands. He wasn\u2019t going there\u2014too fucking late now. Too fucking late. Too late for him, and too fucking late for Elena.<\/p>\n<p>Her body lay wrapped in a blanket that was soaked through with blood. Broken\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. broken, and battered.<\/p>\n<p><em>Trust me\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>How can I be with a man who cannot trust me?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He couldn\u2019t ask it of her\u2014he never had, and he never would have. But she\u2019d looked at him and known that he felt something. She probably understood how he\u2019d felt better than he did. Quinn sucked at feelings. But he\u2019d wanted her. For always. Elena had known and she\u2019d wanted to give it to him.<\/p>\n<p>But he had to trust her.<\/p>\n<p><em>Trust me<\/em> .\u00a0.\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>So he had made himself trust her. And by doing it, he\u2019d let her die.<\/p>\n<p>Tears burned his eyes, but he wouldn\u2019t let them fall. He couldn\u2019t cry. Not right now. He had to take care of Elena. If he managed that without getting caught, then he would get back to his team.<\/p>\n<p>No time to fall apart, not now.<\/p>\n<p><em>God, the team.<\/em> Man, he needed to get back to them. He\u2019d already sent a message back\u2014the mission had been ready to blow up in their faces and he needed to get back to them\u2014<em>now<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But he couldn\u2019t leave Elena\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><em>Trust me\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He should have known better.
