Recently, she decided her series was <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-40551\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/51uahqfpyoL._SY346_.jpg?resize=230%2C346&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"cockygate\" width=\"230\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/51uahqfpyoL._SY346_.jpg?w=230&amp;ssl=1 230w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/51uahqfpyoL._SY346_.jpg?resize=199%2C300&amp;ssl=1 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/>&#8220;The\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Cocky Series&#8221; and she trademarked the word &#8220;Cocky&#8221;, then went after a bunch of authors who had books titled Cocky (fill in the blank).\u00a0 Books got removed by Amazon. Romance Writers of America &amp; the Author&#8217;s Guild got involved. The books removed by Amazon have since been reinstated and Amazon has agreed not to remove any books until the matter is decided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s gone to court because FH wants to sue people. A really awesome author, (and former IP\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">attorney and current hero) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kneupperwriter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Kneupper<\/a> decided to petition to have the trademark canceled, as common use words really aren&#8217;t supposed to be protected by trademarks.\u00a0 It would be like trademarking the word SECRET&#8230;or BABY.\u00a0 The case appeared before a judge on Friday and let&#8217;s just\u00a0say it didn&#8217;t go well for FH. (However, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtneymilan.com\/cockydocs\/I61RHOPM.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">court transcript<\/a> was\u00a0<em>highly<\/em> entertaining to read.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40552 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cocky-books.jpg?resize=625%2C226&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cockygate\" width=\"625\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cocky-books.jpg?resize=1024%2C370&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cocky-books.jpg?resize=300%2C108&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cocky-books.jpg?resize=768%2C277&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cocky-books.jpg?resize=624%2C225&amp;ssl=1 624w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Cocky-books.jpg?w=1780&amp;ssl=1 1780w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">If this was something like\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">muggle,\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">it would be different.\u00a0 But there were authors using the word &#8220;COCKY&#8221; as titles for months before Faleena Hopkins&#8217;s first &#8220;cocky&#8221; book even came on the scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The way trademarks work is that you have to be the FIRST to use something in such a fashion, and it&#8217;s pretty clear FH wasn&#8217;t the first to use COCKY.<\/p>\n<p>Since all of this started, a lot of authors have spoken up.\u00a0 And in the way authors tend to do&#8230;we fight with words.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s already one anthology out&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Jb4GTn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cocktales<\/a>.\u00a0 Author Jackie Barbosa is putting together an antho&#8230; &#8220;The Cocky Cockers&#8221; and I submitted a story for that.\u00a0 Funds will go to either charities or legal funds if needed.<\/p>\n<p>The story I submitted was &#8220;Forever Cocky&#8221;&#8230;a super short story that&#8217;s&#8230;well,\u00a0<em>kind<\/em> of an enemies to lovers, although secret crush is more like it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Forever Cocky<\/em> is the first in the new series I&#8217;ve started&#8230; The Cochrans of Cocker County. And below you can see the covers for the first full-length book&#8230;and the last one. Straight contemporary romance.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure when\u00a0<em>Cocksure<\/em> will be out but I&#8217;m working on it now and I&#8217;ll be getting <del>a blurb up<\/del>\u00a0<strong>(UPDATED TO ADD BLURB-SEE BELOW) <\/strong>it ready for the retailers soon.<\/p>\n<p>Am I doing this to copy or imitate FH?<\/p>\n<p>Hell, no.\u00a0 I&#8217;m doing it because\u00a0<em>nobody should own a word<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>COCKSURE<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sabrina<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s the cockiest bastard I\u2019ve ever met and I mean that with all the affection and adoration in the world.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been in love with him for years, and not just because of those intense blue eyes or that slow smug smile that promises to make all your dreams come true. I\u2019ve seen what lies under that smile and his cocksure attitude. It\u2019s enough to make me melt.<\/p>\n<p>Not that I\u2019d ever let him know.\u00a0 Not <em>only<\/em> is Luke Cochran one of Hollywood\u2019s up-and-coming movie stars\u2026he\u2019s also my boss.\u00a0 I\u2019m his personal assistant and have seen all the women who come and go in his life.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t even hold a candle.\u00a0 But a girl can dream\u2026right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Sabrina is one of the sharpest, funniest, kindest people I\u2019ve ever met. Sometimes, I think I\u2019m taking advantage of her, but I seriously cannot cope with my hectic lifestyle without her to keep me on track.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, my life just got totally knocked <em>off<\/em> track.\u00a0 One of my sisters called.<\/p>\n<p>They need me back home. My mother is sick and the last thing I can think about is the promotional tour I\u2019ve got coming up.<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina\u2019s coming with me.\u00a0 She\u2019s the only person who can keep me focused and centered in a time like this. Besides, my family <em>adores<\/em> her. And it\u2019s just a quick visit.
