\"Shame\"\u201cI\u2019m going to come inside and take a look around,\u201d he announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cShame,\u201d she said, sighing, \u201cyou don\u2019t need to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI do.\u201d He opened the door and met her halfway around the car, eying her as she walked and noting that she was steadier than she had been. \u201cYou\u2019re steady now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am. I think it was just the adrenaline. You did him a lot more damage than he did to me,\u201d she pointed out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t do enough.\u201d He waited until she started for the house, then he fell into step with her, taking the keys from her to unlock the door. He held it for her, but with a hand on her shoulder, kept her from moving deeper into the house as he hit the lights and did a quick walk through the kitchen, then the living room and the rest of the lower level.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you going to go upstairs and check my bedroom next?\u201d she asked tartly. \u201cMake sure that guy didn\u2019t follow us out here and somehow manage to hide under my bed?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got a smart mouth,\u201d Shame said, cutting a look at her. And because he was weak, he found himself staring at her mouth.<\/p>\n

The faint swell in the middle only made him more aware of the fullness of the entire curve of her lower lip. \u201cI don\u2019t like seeing marks on you,\u201d he said, voice raw.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know you don\u2019t,\u201d she said softly. \u201cBut I\u2019m fine, and you can stop worrying.\u201d<\/p>\n

He told himself to do just that. But instead, he moved closer. \u201cDid he touch you anywhere?\u201d Shame demanded.<\/p>\n

She blinked, looking caught off guard. \u201cI\u2026 He grabbed my arms. They are sore, might bruise a little, but it\u2019s no big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBruises are a big deal to me,\u201d he said, his vision going a little hazy. He wanted to hunt the bastard down and put a few bruises on him<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cShame\u2026for crying out loud.\u201d She sounded exasperated. To his surprise, she shrugged out of the gauzy blouse she wore.<\/p>\n

His heart started to thud in slow, heavy beats as the material was peeled away, revealing pale skin that never freckled and sleek, toned arms. She turned to the side and brandished one arm, bared completely. She wore a tank top with thin straps and all he could think was that he could strip that shirt away in a second.<\/p>\n

Then he saw the mottled discoloration on her arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are going to bruise,\u201d he said, voice thick. He didn\u2019t remember closing the distance between them, but he had, and now, as he reached out to gently trace the mark with his fingertip, he noticed that her skin had broken out in goose bumps. \u201cYou\u2019re cold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charli wasn\u2019t looking at him. \u201cNo. I\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

But a light shiver raced down her spine.<\/p>\n

Cupping her chin, he dragged her face around so he could see her eyes. He loved her eyes\u2014steel blue and incisive, all the intelligence she had shining in them.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, she looked at him and those eyes were soft, and emotions she shouldn\u2019t be feeling for him would flicker there. When he saw that, it made him weak.<\/p>\n

And now, those emotions were glinting in her eyes.<\/p>\n

Groaning, he went to pull his hand away.<\/p>\n

She caught his wrist.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet go, Charli,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not a reason,\u201d she said, her voice a challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s reason enough,\u201d he told her. \u201cLet me go. I shouldn\u2019t have come in here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut a monster might have been hiding under my bed,\u201d she teased.<\/p>\n

There was a monster standing in front of her and she seemed blind to it.<\/p>\n
