There seems to be a common theme in the comments…people want to know exactly how\/why Ana betrayed Duke.\u00a0 The answers to that are in one of the previous Hunter books, Hunting the Hunter<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 For those who haven’t read it…I’ve posted a few brief snippets from that book, where they were introduced.\u00a0 But it’s a complicated story there and your best bet is to read Hunting the Hunter.<\/a> Also, please note…the below snippets are not the finalized version, but I can’t find the right file so I’m making due with these.<\/p>\n

Snippet 1:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Duke had had enough of Miss Analise Morrell.\u00a0\u00a0 But she wasn’t going anywhere.\u00a0 He could smell her. The soft sweet scent of her skin called to him as much now as it had that first night.<\/p>\n

Fuck, had it just been three nights ago?<\/p>\n

“Duke?”<\/p>\n

Shit.\u00a0 Can you not even let me ignore you in peace?<\/em> he thought wearily.\u00a0 Opening his one good eye, he stared at her coolly.\u00a0 “Get away from me,” he said hoarsely.\u00a0 His throat was raspy and dry.\u00a0 Duke hadn’t had a drink of water or a bite to eat since he’d left the bar.\u00a0 That wasn’t good for a shifter.<\/p>\n

She seemed to know that, too.\u00a0 In one hand, she held a glass of water and as she held his gaze, she lifted the water to his lips.\u00a0 But Duke just turned his head away. “Get away from me, Analise,” he rasped, staring at the wall in front of him so he wouldn’t have to see her face.<\/p>\n

“Duke, you need water.\u00a0 Drink it.\u00a0 And I’ll bring you some food once…once she leaves for the night,” Analise said as she tried once more to offer him the water.<\/p>\n

Duke jerked his head away almost violently.\u00a0 The glass bobbled out of her hand and fell tot he floor, shattering at his feet. Staring angrily into her eyes, he rasped, “I said get away from me.\u00a0 That bitch wants me dead, so why in the fuck does it matter if I’m thirsty or hungry?”<\/p>\n

Analise backed away, staring at him with eyes he couldn’t read.\u00a0 “Don’t you care if you live or die?”<\/p>\n

Snippet 2:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Duke sucked in a painful breath.\u00a0 Breathing was torture.\u00a0 There were at least two, if not three, broken ribs on his right side.\u00a0 “Get me the fucking water.”<\/p>\n

“So now you want to live?”<\/p>\n

“I never wanted to die.\u00a0 But know this, Analise.\u00a0 if she hurts Kendall, I’ll make damn sure I find a way to make you pay.”<\/p>\n

Analise laughed sadly.\u00a0 “I’ve been paying every single day since she found me, Duke.\u00a0 Don’t worry about that.”<\/p>\n

Snippet 3:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Analise didn’t understand true magic.\u00a0 But she understood psychic power.\u00a0 She had it, after all.\u00a0 It was what had drawn Cat to her.<\/p>\n

And it was the only thing that protected Brad right now.<\/p>\n

He had the power himself.\u00a0 And his own power was strong, entirely too strong.\u00a0 Cat wanted nothing more than to control the child, but so far, she hadn’t been able to.<\/p>\n

If Brad had been a normal child, it would have been child’s play to control him.<\/p>\n

But Brad was unique, in so many ways.\u00a0 And he wouldn’t be controlled.\u00a0 Walking through the door to the room she shared with the nine-year-old boy, Analise met his eyes and forced a smile.\u00a0 “Hey, sweetie.”<\/p>\n

“You have to get him out of here, Ana.\u00a0 She’s going to kill him.”<\/p>\n

Analise shook her head.\u00a0 “She won’t.\u00a0 She’s using him to bait a trap.\u00a0 Doesn’t work as well if the bait is dead.”<\/p>\n

Brad rolled his eyes.\u00a0 “You’re so naive sometimes.\u00a0 All Cat has to do is make this Kendall person think<\/em> he is here, and she’ll come.\u00a0 You’d do the same for me.\u00a0 Get him out.\u00a0 Tonight.”<\/p>\n

Shaking her head at her brother, she said, “No.\u00a0 She’d take it out on you, Brad.\u00a0 I won’t risk it.”<\/p>\n

Snippet 4:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Kendall started to slide into the car but Kane caught her gaze.\u00a0 Something in his eyes made her pause.\u00a0 “Duke, first,” she whispered.\u00a0 Then she looked away and climbed into the car.<\/p>\n

Enough people had died because of her.\u00a0 Because of Cat.\u00a0 She wasn’t going to let another one die.<\/p>\n

Looking into the rearview mirror, she met Analise’s gaze.\u00a0 “If Duke dies, I hope you realize you go with him.”<\/p>\n

Analise nodded.\u00a0 “Just promise me, somebody will take care of my little brother.”<\/p>\n

Guilt ripped at Kendall.\u00a0 The brother played into this.\u00a0 A lot.\u00a0 She gave one sharp nod.<\/p>\n

Hope that helps a little.\u00a0 If not….well, I’m afraid you’ll have to read Hunting the Hunter.\u00a0 I can’t post anything else from that book without major spoilers…and a major headache since I can’t find my finalized file.\u00a0\u00a0 \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n
