\u201cSpeaking of your cast, how is your arm?\u201d he asked easily. \u201cYou doing okay, champ?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt hurts.\u201d Toby stated it matter-of-factly then shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cDad pushed me and I fell of the porch.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words were delivered with the honesty of a child not yet broken.<\/p>\n

Bree went still.<\/p>\n

Connor froze. But the most dangerous reaction came from the man still sitting at the bar.<\/p>\n

Glass shattered.<\/p>\n

Bree jumped at the noise and Con flinched.<\/p>\n

From the corner of his eye, Riley saw Shame slip off the stool. \u201cDude,\u201d the other man said, sighing heavily.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 I\u2019m just a klutz.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shame didn\u2019t wait for a response. He was already walking across the floor and nobody spoke as he disappeared down one hallway and returned a moment later with a broom and dustpan in hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d Toby asked, leaning in to whisper, the words overloud and easily carrying across the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, you heard him.\u201d Riley tried to shrug it off.\u00a0 \u201cShame can be kind of clumsy.\u00a0 He dropped the glass.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s it, kid,\u201d Shame said, voice calm and measured as he cleaned up the mess.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve just got butterfingers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toby didn\u2019t think to ask about why the glass lay broken in a glittering mess of shards ten feet from where Shame had been sitting.\u00a0 But kids could be like that, so open, so easy and trusting.<\/p>\n

To Riley, it was amazing that this could<\/em> trust, considering the life he\u2019d had.<\/p>\n

Shifting the boy onto his hip, he looked over at Bree.<\/p>\n

She was staring at the wall, still frozen.<\/p>\n

\u201cBree.\u201d<\/p>\n

She jumped at the sound of her name and he wanted to go to her, kiss her, touch, hug her, hold her\u2026something, just to let her know she was going to be okay.<\/p>\n

He needed<\/em> it.<\/p>\n

But she was trembling and nervous, her eyes skittering around the room like she was preparing for an attack.<\/p>\n

Riley didn\u2019t know how to handle this.<\/p>\n

He offered a smile and she gave him one in return, but it was weak and wobbling and all that did was make him more furious and it made the helplessness inside him grow until he thought it might explode out of control.<\/p>\n

Silence grew heavy and weighted between them, broken only by the faint noises coming from behind them as Shame finished cleaning up his mess.<\/p>\n

He disappeared again down the hall.\u00a0 Riley could see the other man from the corner of his eye and he half-expected Shame to just disappear.\u00a0 That was what the man did when things got emotionally complicated.\u00a0 Riley understood it.\u00a0 Shame\u2019s life had sucked so bad for so long and Riley couldn\u2019t even say that Shame was getting a grip on any of it, that he\u2019d even learned how to cope.<\/p>\n

What Shame did was exist.<\/p>\n

But Shame didn\u2019t disappear.<\/p>\n

He came back into the main room of the club and approached Bree, stopping a few feet away.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry. You didn\u2019t need that.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked away, uneasy.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you get that looked at?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2026yes.\u00a0 It looks worse than it is.\u201d\u00a0 She met his eyes now and Riley could see the spread of blood creeping up her neck and into her cheeks.<\/p>\n

She was embarrassed, ashamed.<\/p>\n

But she met Shame\u2019s eyes when she wouldn\u2019t even look at Riley. It made sense, in a way.\u00a0 If anybody would understand, it was Shame Schaffer, the son of the biggest piece scum to ever come out of Turner Grove.<\/p>\n

His father, Samuel Schaffer, was serving a life sentence a federal penitentiary, but not for the crimes he\u2019d committed against Shame.\u00a0 Just about everybody in the whole damn town had turned a blind eye to what had been done to him as a boy.\u00a0 His father was the richest man in town\u2014who was going to cross him?<\/p>\n

Sadly, nobody had realized just what would happen when that man\u2019s children grew up and had children of their own\u2014like his daughter.\u00a0 She\u2019d ignored the cries and screams\u2026until it was her own son.<\/p>\n

Shame had sat through the entire trial.<\/p>\n

Riley had been there with him, as had his brother and sister.<\/p>\n

Never once had they discussed it.<\/p>\n

But they all knew.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t go back,\u201d Shame said softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d\u00a0 She nodded slowly, the movement awkward like she\u2019d forgotten how to control her own body.<\/p>\n

A moment later, Shame turned around and headed for the door.\u00a0 He paused long enough to say, \u201cI\u2019ll see what I can do about that\u2026staffing problem that developed last night, Ry.\u00a0 Back in later today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2026uh\u2026yeah. I need to go eat.\u201d\u00a0 Con gave Bree a quick hug, light and easy, and then he paused by Toby and hugged him.\u00a0 \u201cYou be good, tough guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toby laughed.\u00a0 \u201cBye, Con.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once the three of them were alone, Bree busied herself looking at everything but Riley.<\/p>\n

Riley busied himself with eating in the sight of her as fast as he could.<\/p>\n

The only times he ever saw her were on the random trips to the grocery store\u2014he knew her schedule like the back of his hand and did his best to time all of his shopping so that he\u2019d be there when she worked.<\/p>\n

But those few minutes each week weren\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n

Not for him and not for her, either.<\/p>\n

She still cared about him. He could see it.<\/p>\n

Her eyes would light up and she\u2019d get that blush of nervous excitement she\u2019d had on her cheeks the first time he\u2019d asked her out, the first time he\u2019d kissed her\u2026the first time he\u2019d stripped her naked and made love to her in the back of his old pick-up truck.<\/p>\n

Now, as if she sensed his thoughts, she glanced over at him and that blush made an appearance, started low on her neck, tinging her dusky skin with a soft pink and spreading upward.\u00a0 He wanted to bite her, wanted to lick her and kiss her and a thousand other things.<\/p>\n
