A rage that made no<\/span><\/em> sense to Duke.\u00a0 Even as he prowled around the vampire, struggling against the urge to pounce, there was a saner part of his mind that kept demanding, What in the hell is your problem<\/span><\/em>?<\/p>\n

Ana wasn\u2019t hurt\u2014nobody would have let it go that far.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t even waste time trying to convince himself that he\u2019d be this pissed no matter who the woman had been.\u00a0 Of course he\u2019d been pissed.\u00a0 Ready to rip a throat out.<\/p>\n

Except he knew his reaction wouldn\u2019t be this<\/em> extreme.<\/p>\n

Ana\u2014that bastard had put his hands on Ana.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou put your hands on her\u2014after she made it clear she didn\u2019t want you touching her.\u00a0 But you want us to buy that you wouldn\u2019t hurt her?\u201d he asked quietly, pacing in a tight circle around Neal.<\/p>\n

Neal echoed Duke\u2019s movements, keeping the shifter in his sight.\u00a0 Baffled, he said, \u201cYou make her sound like some kindergarten teacher, like I was going to grab her, rape her and drain her dry, just for breathing.\u00a0 She\u2019s not some damned innocent.\u00a0 She\u2019s not some helpless victim. She\u2019s not\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s mortal.\u201d\u00a0 Duke closed the distance between them and reached out.\u00a0 Vamps were quick.\u00a0 Shifters?\u00a0 Quicker.\u00a0 Neal didn\u2019t have time to evade as Duke grabbed him and whirled.\u00a0 Slamming the vamp back into the wall, Duke repeated, \u201cShe\u2019s mortal\u2014she\u2019s got psychic gifts, but her power is all in the mind.\u00a0 She\u2019s got no offensive powers, she\u2019s no stronger than some kindergarten teacher.\u00a0 She gets hurt, she\u2019ll take just as long to heal as any other mortal.\u00a0 You cut her, she\u2019ll bleed like any other mortal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neal shoved Duke back, but he was still caught in the grip of that inexplicable rage and he snarled at the younger man, flashing incisors that had already begun to lengthen.\u00a0 His gray eyes swirled and pinwheeled, glowing with ominous warning.\u00a0 Rage\u2014hot, thick and potent, spiraled inside him, straining against his skin, fighting to tear past the confines of his self-control.<\/p>\n

Over her<\/span><\/em>\u2014<\/p>\n

Ana\u2026<\/p>\n

The man inside him struggled with it, fought to understand it.\u00a0 The animal inside him didn\u2019t care<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n
