Less than sixty seconds after she\u2019d said yes, her brother Brannon had proposed to his girlfriend Hannah.\u00a0 He\u2019d been planning his proposal\u2014Neve\u2019s fianc\u00e9 hadn\u2019t known and had popped the question.<\/p>\n<p>There was plenty to celebrate.<\/p>\n<p>Moira just shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cThis is a happy time for them. I\u2019m just as good in here as I am out there. Nobody wants to talk plans tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plates in her hand smacked down sharply on the edge of the counter, hitting with enough force he was surprised none of them broke.\u00a0 Moira was still staring at the plates, her jaw tight.\u00a0 \u201cI could go out there and be a fifth wheel. No thanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ella Sue, a genteel sort of tyrant, came bustling in and she arched a brow at him before looking at Moira\u2019s stiff back.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m in the mood for champagne,\u201d she announced, taking up an empty space at the counter.<\/p>\n<p>While she tore the foil, Gideon turned back the sink and rinsed a few dishes off.\u00a0 \u201cI used to wonder who did all of this,\u201d Gideon said.\u00a0 He was talking just to talk and he knew it.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t care for the sound of his own voice, but it was better than that terse silence.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019ve got all the money in the world. You could hire people to do this stuff. Then you could hire people to hire people to do it <em>for<\/em> the people\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moira let out a soft, strained sigh.<\/p>\n<p>He looked over at her.<\/p>\n<p>Their gazes locked and held for a moment and she broke it, shifting her attention back to the pots she was putting up.\u00a0 \u201cMom and Dad wanted to make sure we understood the value of hard work.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of the things that have kept this family honest and successful all these years\u2014or so they say,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard them tell you that, more than once.\u201d\u00a0 He blew out a breath, mind turning back to the man who used to watch him every time Gideon would escort Moira out the door for a date. \u201cSometimes I still expect to hear him, you know. Your dad, that voice of his. Big and powerful, echoed all through the place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d\u00a0 She glanced over at him, smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>A few moments later they were all done.<\/p>\n<p>Ella Sue pushed a glass of champagne at each of them and then disappeared\u2014again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe seems more interested in flitting in and out than anything,\u201d he said.\u00a0 He was under no illusions as to why, either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard you were out with Maris the other night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moira\u2019s voice\u2014bright and almost too cheerful\u2014cut through his heart like a knife.<\/p>\n<p>He took a slow, deliberate sip of the champagne, the bubbles oddly flat on his tongue. It had come from the McKay cellars and chances were that the stuff cost a good grand a bottle.\u00a0 But it was like water to him.\u00a0 He still took another easy sip before he looked over at her.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn\u2019t surprise Moira had heard he\u2019d been out with Maris Cordell, one of the deputies with the county sheriff\u2019s department.\u00a0 What he was surprised about was the fact that she seemed to give a damn.<\/p>\n<p>She tossed her champagne back like it was moonshine and she was dying for the buzz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had dinner.\u201d\u00a0 He shrugged casually and thought to himself he wouldn\u2019t have made a bad actor.<\/p>\n<p>Moira, however, never would have made it.\u00a0 She gave him a sharp-edged look and said, \u201cIsn\u2019t that just <em>lovely<\/em>.\u00a0 I bet you two have a lot to talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gideon ran his tongue over his teeth, debated.\u00a0 Then he shrugged and tossed back the rest of the bubbly wine.\u00a0 He rinsed out the glass.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019d better head out.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got case files to last me into the next decade, so\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe the deputy can give you hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor fuck\u2019s sake!\u201d He spun around and glared at her.<\/p>\n<p>She gave him an innocent smile as she polished off her champagne and put the flute down.<\/p>\n<p>Striding back to her, he caught her arms.\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you want, Moira?\u00a0 It\u2019s sure as hell not me.\u00a0 I spent almost twenty <em>years<\/em> begging for you to come back to me, but you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears gleamed in her eyes as she stared up at him.<\/p>\n<p>A fist grabbed him by the throat, by the heart.\u00a0 \u201cYou won\u2019t,\u201d he said bleakly.\u00a0 As the tears broke free and rolled down her cheeks, he brushed them away.\u00a0 \u201cYou won\u2019t.\u00a0 You\u2019re the only woman I\u2019ve ever loved.\u00a0 Probably the only woman I\u2019m ever going to love.\u00a0 But I\u2019m tired of standing on the sidelines, of reaching out for you only to have you push me away.\u00a0 I\u2019m <em>tired<\/em>, Moira.\u00a0 I\u2019m tired of being alone and being lonely.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want me.
