I was going to write this post on Sunday, but upon seeing the news about the Pulse shooting, I held off. I need to write it now before I forget. \u00a0I spent the weekend in Alabama for the Heart of Dixie Readers Luncheon, which was fabulous. \u00a0Kristan Higgins was the speaker and she was wonderful.\u00a0\"romance<\/p>\n

She hit some excellent points when she was talking, and this one really hit home and I wanted to share.<\/p>\n

Now…about that book…<\/p>\n

After the luncheon and signing was over, I was killing time down in the lounge area and ended up talking to some ladies who’d driven down from Ohio.<\/p>\n

One of them wants to write. As a matter of fact, she does write. \u00a0Like a lot of new writers, it sounds like she keeps rewriting the same chapter…over and over.<\/p>\n

And yes…a\u00a0lot<\/em> of new writers do this. \u00a0I think the reasoning is because they read their writing, then read the books they read and think…It should be more like that<\/em>, or they are aspiring to perfection from the get go.<\/p>\n

But perfection never happens. \u00a0What\u00a0does<\/em> happen is learning how to hone your own voice, and that doesn’t happen until you’ve written a couple of books. \u00a0I think it was Sylvia Day who said this…<\/p>\n

“I think it took me maybe a million words before I discovered my voice.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What is your voice? \u00a0It’s basically the author’s storytelling fingerprint–how each of us tell our story. \u00a0It’s uniquely ours, but it takes a while to find that voice. \u00a0It also takes a while to find what kind of story we have to tell.<\/p>\n

And if you’re wondering what that means…?<\/p>\n

At another event I was out to dinner with a couple more writers. \u00a0And this is awful, but I can’t remember who asked me. \u00a0She asked what kind of stories I wrote–she didn’t mean\u00a0genre<\/em>. She went on to explain that she wrote about tribes…families. \u00a0After a minute, I responded,\u00a0I write about broken people…and how they put their lives back together<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Writers tends to have a\u00a0core<\/em> story.<\/p>\n

Nora Roberts writes a lot of families, for example.<\/p>\n

Discovering your voice, and that core story, takes time…you have to write several stories before you figure that out. \u00a0And that first story, that second story? Probably even the third one are going to suck. \u00a0Very few writers publish their very first book…and most of us are\u00a0fine<\/em> with that. \u00a0My first story was written in purple ink in seventh grade and\u00a0noooooo….<\/em>I don’t want it published. \u00a0Write that first book, then put it away. \u00a0Then write another. And another…by the time you’re ready for the fourth book, you’ll start understanding more about your voice, more about your core story.<\/p>\n

Sound complicated? Sound hard?<\/p>\n

Well…to quote another writer? Paraphrasing here, because it’s been a couple of years, but…<\/p>\n

It’s meant to be hard. \u00a0If it wasn’t, anybody could do it. \u00a0It’s the hard that makes it special. -Nora Roberts, RWA Keynote Speaker, 2010<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
