Hell took the form of Damon shifting to his half form, over seven feet tall, his muscled pelt covered in a golden pelt and spotted. His clothes fell in shreds around him as he launched himself at Scott.<\/p>\n

My mind denied what it was seeing.<\/p>\n

Scott flung up a hand and Damon flew to the far side of the room while Scott leaped toward me. I whipped up my sword, my mind furiously trying catch up with what was going on. \u201cStay back,\u201d I warned.<\/p>\n

A grin\u2014one that seemed both insanely out of place and strangely familiar\u2014twisted Scott\u2019s lips.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, now, Kit\u2026is that any way to say hello to an old friend?\u201d<\/p>\n

The voice\u2014oh, shit<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Those words had no sooner left his lips than a growl ripped out of the shifters who\u2019d burst into the room like their lives depended on it.<\/p>\n

And one of them was\u2026Scott<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Damon was off the floor and moving again.<\/p>\n

Instinct screamed.<\/p>\n

Move now\u2014think later<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I swore as I dove for Damon and the Scott-lookalike. \u201cI\u2019m going to kill you,\u201d I told the man who\u2019d somehow managed to sneak into the Lair. Of all <\/em>places.<\/p>\n

He chuckled, his visage starting to waver. \u201cYou won\u2019t be saying that in a minute. I\u2019m here for a reason\u2026you know that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He leaped up and in a movement that defied physics\u2014and the human body\u2014as he flipped and sailed through the air, placing his body behind mine.<\/p>\n

Damon made a deep, deep noise, one that spoke of fury\u2014and I heard something else, too.<\/p>\n

Perhaps Chang would recognize it, but I doubted anybody else would.<\/p>\n

It was fear.<\/p>\n

He saw only some unknown enemy and the man was now at my back.<\/p>\n

I held up a hand. \u201cStop\u2026Damon\u2026stop. He\u2019s not\u2026\u201d I heaved out a breath before I said the one thing that might keep the man in front of me from trying to kill the man behind me. \u201cHe\u2019s a friend. He\u2019s saved my life twice now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Damon slowed for a split second, but nothing changed the animalistic set to his features.<\/p>\n

Behind me, there was a faint whisper. \u201cYou\u2019d think I\u2019d remember how sharp their noses are, wouldn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope you enjoyed yourself,\u201d Damon said, his voice a predatory growl. \u201cEvery man should have a little fun before he dies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I don\u2019t do this<\/em> for fun, son. Trust me, this<\/em> is a pain in the ass.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be a more of a moron than you already are,\u201d I snapped over my shoulder.<\/p>\n

Chang was staring at the man behind me with eyes that promised death. This was going to be ugly. The man had breached their home\u2014their safehold. Unless he had a good reason for doing that…<\/p>\n

Damon made another move toward me, green-gold eyes locked on the intruder.<\/p>\n

\u201cDamon\u2026I know him.\u201d I reached back, daring to risk one quick glance\u2014my eyes connected with eyes of pure white<\/em>\u2014all white. No pupil, no discernible iris and whiter than any mortal eye should be.<\/p>\n

And Nova, for all intents and purposes, was<\/em> mortal.<\/p>\n

A freakishly powerful mortal with psychic skills that weren\u2019t supposed to exist, but still, he was mortal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello, Nova.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at me and grinned. \u201cKit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Damon took a step forward.<\/p>\n

Chang placed a hand on his shoulder and they shared a look. The subtle nod Damon gave the other man unsettled me and I pondered ripping my hair out when Chang was the one to move forward to meet Nova.<\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t call Damon the more reasonable<\/em> one of the two, but there were times I could get Damon to listen to me. If Chang made up his mind…<\/p>\n

Nova slid to the side, shifting so that he faced all of us, although he was clearly keeping his focus on the shifters. \u201cCome on, boys\u2026let\u2019s all take a deep breath and calm down.\u201d He shot them what was considered his\u2026less crazy smile. \u201cI\u2019ve been here three times <\/em>today and I\u2019ve called five<\/em> asking, then demanding then begging<\/em> to speak to Kit. It\u2019s urgent, I said. It\u2019s life or death, I said. And I\u2019m told to leave a message at her office.\u201d<\/p>\n

He snorted and shot me a sidelong look. \u201cKit, how often do you check messages at your office?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGet to the point, Nova.\u201d<\/p>\n

He hitched up a shoulder. \u201cI\u2019m trying to be polite and explain why I felt the need to take drastic measures, Kit. In a minute, you\u2019ll be just as pissed as I am. The third time I came to the gate and said I absolutely had to see you\u2026\u201d The whites of his eyes started to glow.<\/p>\n

Oh, fuck\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cSee, I was told, We don\u2019t listen to urgent messages from the likes of <\/em>you, meat. Get out<\/em>.\u201d Nova\u2019s smile went cold. \u201cThe guards you have at the door really should show more courtesy\u2014I could have turned them<\/em> into meat. But I showed restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chang made no response, just took another slow step toward Nova.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really should have left a message at her office,\u201d Damon said.<\/p>\n

\u201cKit sucks at checking her messages. I thought this kind of thing\u2014the lives of some friends and all\u2014was a bit more important.\u201d Nova cocked his head. \u201cBut if not\u2026well, we can get downright nasty in here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lives of some friends\u2026?<\/p>\n

\u201cNova?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

Scott\u2014the real one\u2014had circled around. I whipped my gun out and leveled it at his knee. \u201cDon\u2019t. I like you, Scott, but if you even think of trying to move me out of the way\u2026I\u2019ll put you on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nova chuckled. \u201cNow it gets fun<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

I fought the urge to turn and punch him in the nose. \u201cOne of these days, I\u2019ll find a way to thank Justin properly <\/em>for introducing us, Nova.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can do that by saving his life, Kit. Now…\u201d<\/p>\n

I spun to stare at him, the gun falling limp to my side. I was the one to lunge for Nova. And he didn\u2019t try to stop me. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow\u2026ask me why I\u2019m here,\u201d he said gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cNova.\u201d<\/p>\n
