Something wicked this way comes\u2026<\/i><\/div>\n
The arrival of a very important person in her office seemed to be the start of a lot of problems for Kit Colbana, investigator extraordinaire.\u00a0 Claiming that he needed somebody with her special skillset, he sends her on a series of jobs that made little to no sense until one culminated with both her and her partner, Justin barely escaping with their lives.<\/span><\/div>\n
Back in Orlando, they go their separate ways to recover, Justin heading to the house of a local witch, while Kit returns to the Lair, where she\u2019s recently been living with her lover Damon, the Alpha of the Southern Cat Clans.<\/span><\/div>\n
There\u2019s barely a chance for to catch her breath before trouble of the highest order comes knocking on her door. This time, it\u2019s the form of a psychic by the name of Nova.\u00a0 Nova has bad, bad news\u2026Justin has gone missing and so has the witch who was going to put him up while he healed. Colleen, one of Kit\u2019s closest, dearest friends.<\/span><\/div>\n
With all sorts of non-humans disappearing, fury doesn\u2019t even touch what Kit is feeling as she heads out to hunt down the people responsible.<\/span><\/div>\n
But Kit isn\u2019t the only one out on a hunt\u2026somebody is hunting for\u00a0her<\/i>\u2026somebody Kit would rather never, ever see again.<\/span><\/div>\n

It was just pure dumb luck that I found her at all.<\/span><\/div>\n

The\u2026 Well, I can\u2019t say it was a house, but it had been her home. She\u2019d left it weeks ago, maybe longer. It was dying, too.<\/div>\n

Granted, when I\u2019d been sent out to look for her, I\u2019d thought maybe it was another wild goose chase\u2014the first job had been a pain in the ass, too.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But this one\u2026<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Hell.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I was staring at a dryad.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A real dryad.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
She turned her head and stared at me with eyes the color of good, strong oak. In her hand, she had a branch she used to draw circles in the earth.<\/div>\n
After a few seconds of us studying each other, she went back to looking out over the river, her gaze sad.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWhat is it you want?\u201d she asked, her voice reedy and thin.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Like she was fading, dying as swiftly as the tree she\u2019d left behind.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As I fumbled for an answer, she lifted the branch and plucked off one of the leaves. They were still green. But the moment she plucked that single leaf away, it withered, shriveled, and then it was dust\u2014even before it hit the ground.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI\u2026\u201d Uneasy, I licked my lips. \u201cYour tree is dying.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cNo.\u201d Those dark brown eyes came back to mine. \u201cIt is already dead. It died when I left it. It just hasn\u2019t figured that out yet. It will. But that isn\u2019t what you want.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWhy did you leave it?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cBecause the wind whispered it was time.\u201d She lifted a shoulder and the wispy strips of cloth that made up her garments drifted with the movement before settling back into black. She was more naked than clothed\u2014covered at her breasts and hips. Her skin was a mottled mix of brown and tan. She could stand in the trees and scarcely be seen, but standing out here on the side of the road and gazing into the river, she stood out.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
That was how I\u2019d found her.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I\u2019d been heading back to East Orlando, carefully thinking through the call I\u2019d have to make, when I saw her. I\u2019d been driving the backroads, mostly because I wanted to think, and all the traffic on the main roads annoyed me.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The last thought I\u2019d had before caught sight of the woman had been\u2026I never should have taken this stupid job.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
My current client\u2014I now realized\u2014was a self-important, pompous prick.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But I\u2019d accepted the contract, and for another three weeks, I was giving him twenty hours a week for work of a sensitive nature. His term, not mine.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The first job, I\u2019d been asked to find out if there was any truth to the rumors of a Green Man who might be living in Alabama\u2014he had a locale and a few names; he wanted me to look around and see what I thought. I\u2019d also been asked to talk to the families of a couple missing NHs while in the area. Missing non-humans was why I\u2019d taken the damn job to begin with.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Missing people. He had connections.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
There weren\u2019t many who had more connections than the President of the United States of America, after all.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
When I\u2019d told him I didn\u2019t see the connection between a possible Green Man and the disappearances, he\u2019d pointed out that a Green Man would have ways of seeing things happening in nature that I could never see.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Well\u2026true enough.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But if there was something weirder than a shifter in those decaying woods, then I hadn\u2019t felt it.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
My boss hadn\u2019t seemed bothered when I\u2019d been unsuccessful. But I hadn\u2019t wanted to tell him I\u2019d found a dryad\u2019s tree\u2026and no dryad.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Right now, though, I wanted even less to tell him I\u2019d found the dryad.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThe wind told you it was time?\u201d Raking her up and down with a look, I shook my head. \u201cWhat else is the wind telling you to do?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThe wind tells me to do nothing.\u201d A serene smile curled her lips as she plucked off another leaf. This time, when it shriveled and faded, she seemed to fade a little more, too.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Oh, shit.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cIs that from your tree?\u201d I asked softly.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cYes. All that is left, all that is living.\u201d She plucked another leaf. \u201cOnce it is gone…\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cSo why are you killing it?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cBecause unlike Albus, I am not strong. I cannot stand up to pain and torture. Even cutting down a single tree would break me, and he has much more in mind than cutting down trees.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Abruptly, she wrenched a handful of leaves, four, five, six\u2026 Dust blew around me and I rushed to her as she swayed, then staggered. She felt lighter than air as I eased her down. Her skin felt like the smooth bark on a young tree. \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
She just shook her head. \u201cIt\u2019s been a long time coming. This\u2026this is best. I\u2019ll see Albus soon.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
She tried to fumble a few more leaves off but her hands shook too much.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cPlease.\u201d She looked at me.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
My phone rang.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
She continued to watch me with those calm, patient eyes. Patient, solid.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Like an oak.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I took the branch and stripped the remaining leaves off as the phone rang again.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
By the third ring, she was withering away, turning to nothing but dust and ash that blew away in the soft, chilly fall breeze.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I answered the fourth ring.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cMs. Colbana, I was calling for an update.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI found her.\u201d Dragging a finger through the dust, I rose to my feet and stared down. Even the branch was gone. \u201cShe\u2019s dead, sir.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s pissed.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Shanelle Maguire was a beautiful bitch and she delivered the words in a stark voice as she dropped into the chair across from my desk.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI gathered that.\u201d I\u2019d just finish talking to him myself. Whitmore was a pain in the ass. \u201cDid he send you here to snarl and snap at me in hopes of making me do better?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
She snorted. \u201cLike that\u2019d do any good.\u201d She skimmed her hands back over her hair in what I\u2019d come to realize was a nervous habit. Beautiful bitch or not, I\u2019d come to sort of like her over the past ten days. She was blunt and didn\u2019t hold back the truth, something I could definitely appreciate.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
She was also manipulative as hell\u2014something I less appreciated\u2014but she knew how to make things happen. \u201cLook, I was standing out\u2014\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThis is my shocked face.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cShut up,\u201d she said, sighing in annoyance. \u201cI heard you explaining what happened. What were you going to do? She wanted to die.<\/div>\n
\u00a0Although\u2026wow. Picking leaves off a tree branch\u2014that\u2019s crazy.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cDryads have a connection to their chosen trees.\u201d I shrugged and thought of the forest giant I\u2019d gone back to look at before returning home. It hadn\u2019t turned to dust, but it was dead. It had been an oddity, standing there in the middle of the forest where so many trees had already gone brilliantly orange and yellow, but its leaves had been green\u2026mostly. Some, though, had been going brown. Not yellow or orange, the way you\u2019d think.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But brown.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
All the leaves had been gone the second time I saw it and the branches hung despondent, as if the tree\u2019s strength had simply drained out of it with the life of the dryad gone. I\u2019d touched the bark and it had crumbled under the light pressure.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A few storms, a few hard rains, and it would come crashing down.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cSo she just lay there, plucked the last few leaves and died, huh?\u201d Shanelle wasn\u2019t even looking at me. She was staring off at nothing, looking about as tired as I felt\u2014although I doubted it was for the same reason.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cFaded into dust,\u201d I said, carefully dancing around the fact that I wasn\u2019t telling the complete truth. I\u2019d had to do the same with Whitmore, but for some reason, I was reluctant to explain that I had been the one to strip away those few remaining leaves.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Whitmore had really wanted to talk to that dryad.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
My gut was all twisted and hot as I remembered what she had said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Who was the he she\u2019d been referring to? I had a bad feeling it might be my client\u2014but there was no way I could even try to figure that out without questioning him; everything in me was saying Don\u2019t\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I thought of asking Shanelle, probing gently. I knew how to dance around things and be subtle. It wasn\u2019t my greatest skill, but I could do it.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
While I was debating, though, the door swung open.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The sight of the man standing there was enough to distract me, though.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cJustin…\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I hurtled across the room and caught him up in a hug so hard, he was laughing and wheezing at the same time. \u201cCareful there, Kit\u2026I break.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I didn\u2019t care. \u201cYou\u2019re awake.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cSeems that way. Although if you keep squeezing the life out of me…\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Two weeks ago, Justin had almost died. The first week, he\u2019d been in a coma. He\u2019d started to stir, but another friend of ours, Colleen had used her healing to put him back under.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThe swelling in his brain has gone down, but there\u2019s still a lot of healing to do\u2014the area of the brain that controls magic has been heavily damaged and the longer he rests, the more likely it will be that he\u2019ll regain full control.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We\u2019d agreed. He needed to stay asleep for a bit longer, but Colleen could only hold him for a few more days before she had to bring him back.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t know she was letting you up today.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He patted my back when I sniffed.<\/span><\/div>\n

Absently, I\u2019d realized Shanelle had left and I still needed to talk to her. But that could wait.<\/div>\n
