\"ShadowedSomething wicked this way comes\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The arrival of a very important person in her office seemed to be the start of a lot of problems for Kit Colbana, investigator extraordinaire.\u00a0 Claiming that he needed somebody with her special skillset, he sends her on a series of jobs that made little to no sense until one culminated with both her and her partner, Justin barely escaping with their lives.<\/p>\n

Back in Orlando, they go their separate ways to recover, Justin heading to the house of a local witch, while Kit returns to the Lair, where she\u2019s recently been living with her lover Damon, the Alpha of the Southern Cat Clans.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s barely a chance for Kit to catch her breath before trouble of the highest order comes knocking on her door. This time, it\u2019s the form of a psychic by the name of Nova.\u00a0 Nova has bad, bad news\u2026Justin has gone missing and so has the witch who was going to put him up while he healed. Colleen, one of Kit\u2019s closest, dearest friends.<\/p>\n

With all sorts of non-humans disappearing, fury doesn\u2019t even touch what Kit is feeling as she heads out to hunt down the people responsible.<\/p>\n

But Kit isn\u2019t the only one out on a hunt\u2026somebody is hunting for\u00a0her\u2026somebody Kit would rather never, ever see again.<\/p>\n

\"Kit<\/p>\n

It was just pure dumb luck that I found her at all.<\/p>\n

The\u2026well, I can\u2019t say it was a house<\/em>, but it had been her home. But she\u2019d left it weeks ago, maybe longer.\u00a0 It was dying, too.<\/p>\n

Granted, when I\u2019d been sent out to look for her, I\u2019d thought maybe it was another wild goose chase\u2014the first job had been a pain in the ass, too.<\/p>\n

But this one\u2026<\/p>\n

Hell.<\/p>\n

I was staring at a dryad.<\/p>\n

A real<\/em> dryad.<\/p>\n

She turned her head and stared at me with eyes the color of good, strong oak. In her hand, she held a branch that she used to draw circles in the earth.<\/p>\n

After a few seconds of us studying each other, she went back to looking out over the river, her gaze sad.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it you want?\u201d she asked, her voice reedy and thin.<\/p>\n

Like she was fading, dying as swiftly as the tree she\u2019d left behind.<\/p>\n

As I fumbled for an answer, she lifted the branch and plucked off one of the leaves. They were still green.\u00a0 But the moment she plucked that single leaf away, it withered, shriveled and then it was dust, even before it hit the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2026\u201d Uneasy, I licked my lips.\u00a0 \u201cYour tree is dying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 Those dark brown eyes came back to mine.\u00a0 \u201cIt is already dead.\u00a0 It died when I left it.\u00a0 It just hasn\u2019t figured that out yet.\u00a0 It will. But that isn\u2019t what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy did you leave it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause the wind whispered it was time.\u201d She lifted a shoulder and the wispy strips of cloth that made up her garments drifted with the movement before settling back into black.\u00a0 She was more naked than clothed, covered at her breasts and hips and her skin was a mottled mix of brown and tan.\u00a0 She could stand in the trees and scarcely be seen, but standing out her on the side of the road and gazing into the river, she stood out.<\/p>\n

That<\/em> was how I\u2019d found her.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d been heading back to East Orlando, carefully think through the call I\u2019d have to make when I saw her.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d been hired by somebody I\u2019d recently decided was a self-important pompous prick but I\u2019d accepted the contract and for another three weeks, I was giving him twenty hours a week for work of a sensitive nature.\u00a0 The first job, I\u2019d been asked to find out if there was any truth to the rumors of a Green Man who might be living in Alabama\u2014he had a locale and a few names and he wanted my thoughts on it.\u00a0 I\u2019d also been asked to talk to the families of a couple missing NHs.\u00a0 That<\/em> was why I\u2019d agreed to work with him anyway. Missing people. He had connections.<\/p>\n

There weren\u2019t many people who had more connections than the President of the United States of America, after all.<\/p>\n

When I\u2019d told him I didn\u2019t see the connection between a possible Green Man and the disappearances, he\u2019d pointed out that a Green Man would have ways of seeing things happening in nature that I could never see.<\/p>\n

Well\u2026true enough.<\/p>\n

But if there was something weirder than a shifter in those woods, then I hadn\u2019t felt it.<\/p>\n

My boss hadn\u2019t seem bothered when I\u2019d been unsuccessful.\u00a0 But I hadn\u2019t wanted to tell him I\u2019d found a dryad\u2019s tree\u2026and no dryad.<\/p>\n

Right now, though, I wanted even less<\/em> to tell him I\u2019d found the dryad.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wind told you it was time?\u201d Raking her up and down with a look, I shook my head.\u00a0 \u201cWhat else is the wind telling you to do?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wind tells me to do nothing<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 A serene smile curled her lips as she plucked off another leave.\u00a0 This time, when it shriveled and faded, she<\/em> seemed to fade a little more, too.<\/p>\n

Oh, shit.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that from your tree?\u201d I asked softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u00a0 All that is left, all that is living.\u201d\u00a0 She plucked another leave. \u201cOnce it is gone\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo why are you killing<\/em> it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause unlike Albus, I am not strong. I cannot stand up to pain and torture.\u00a0 Even cutting down a single tree would break me and he has much more in mind than cutting down trees<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abruptly, she wrenched a handful of leaves, four, five, six\u2026dust blew around me and I rushed to her as she swayed, then staggered.\u00a0 She felt lighter than air as I eased her down.\u00a0 Her skin felt like the smooth bark on a young tree.\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

She just shook her head.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s been a long time coming. This\u2026this is best. I\u2019ll see Albus soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

She tried to fumble a few more leaves off but her hands shook too much.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease.\u201d She looked at me.<\/p>\n

My phone rang.<\/p>\n

She continued to watch me with those calm, patient eyes. Patient, solid. Like an oak.<\/p>\n

I took the branch and stripped the remaining leaves off as the phone rang again.<\/p>\n

By the third ring, she was withering away, turning to nothing but dust and ash that blew away in the soft, chilly fall breeze.<\/p>\n

I answered the fourth ring.<\/p>\n

\u201cMs. Colbana, I was calling for an update.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI found her.\u201d Dragging a finger through the dust, I rose to my feet and stared down.\u00a0 Even the branch was gone.\u00a0 \u201cShe\u2019s dead, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n
