Despondent, I reached out and fisted my hand in the grass.<\/p>\n

The stupid, stubbornly green grass.<\/p>\n

Black feathers appeared in my line of sight and a moment later, gold-dusted skin followed.<\/p>\n

Crow sat in front of me and finally, I looked up.<\/p>\n

He arched a brow.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will not speak?\u201d he asked softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have much to say to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn\u2019t my fault the traitor is gone,\u201d Crow said, lifting a shoulder. \u201cHe owes a debt he can never repay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oh. That was so<\/em> the wrong thing to say.<\/p>\n

I was on my feet. I didn\u2019t even recall moving. Shoving my face into his, I jammed a finger into his chest. It was like trying to shove a finger through a boulder. He didn\u2019t budge. I just shoved harder. \u201cI don\u2019t give a damn what debt<\/em> he owes. If you got a problem with him, that\u2019s your tough luck. You clearly have no idea<\/em> how many lives he\u2019s saved, how much good he has done. Whatever he fucked up back in the day? I think he\u2019s square with the house again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSquare?\u201d Crow\u2019s brows dropped.<\/p>\n

I could all but see<\/em> him puzzling through what she\u2019d said. Yeah, yeah, yeah\u2026I\u2019d used modern talk with somebody who was clearly not<\/em> modern. The weight of his years hung over me like an oppressive cloak, grabbing at my neck, all but choking me.<\/p>\n

Will and Sina had that kind of feel to them, but Crow was even more<\/em> so. I don\u2019t want to think about how old he was. Once, I\u2019d managed to get enough information out of Sina to make a stab at her age. She wasn\u2019t quite <\/em>two thousand years old, but she was close.<\/p>\n

Will was\u2014and damn it, he was still alive\u2014older.<\/p>\n

Crow had even more age to him\u2014I could feel it weighing down the air around me.<\/p>\n

He felt so very\u2026other<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I think he\u2019d been human once, but he now made no attempt at being anything but what he was. Other<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d I went back to staring at the spot where I\u2019d last seen Will. \u201cHe\u2019s paid his debt, and then some.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes I thought that if I stared hard enough, if I waited long enough, he would just come back. He could find his way back.<\/p>\n

Crow sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cFoolish child. You don\u2019t even understand what he did. How can you decide if he has paid<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got more than two thousand years of paying<\/em> under his belt,\u201d I said, shaking my head. \u201cHe\u2019s been forced to kill and bring people back, forced to watch everything he knows, everybody he knows die and watch as the world changes all around him\u2014and he\u2019s still here. You think that\u2019s not an acceptable payment?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked up at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s given up his very soul. What else must he give up?\u201d<\/p>\n

Crow made a derisive snort. \u201cThe one you call Will has<\/em> no soul. He gave that<\/em> shriveled, useless thing up long ago. But believe in your fairy story if you must. Perhaps it will comfort you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rose and launched himself into the sky. My eyes watered from the force of his passing.<\/p>\n

\u201cFairy tale<\/em>,\u201d I muttered. \u201cIt\u2019s fairy tale<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

And I\u2019d do just that. I had little else left to believe in.<\/p>\n
