My kids and I were talking about writers and books and trainwrecks the other day. \u00a0Trainwrecks as in the kind of books that we sometimes find ourselves reading that we keep asking ourselves…why<\/em> am I reading this….<\/p>\n

Specifically, my kids and I got to talking about trainwrecks.<\/p>\n

Let me explain what a trainwreck is…They are the books that riddled with plotholes or characters that just don’t make sense. \u00a0In romance, sometimes the hero is a total ass. \u00a0I don’t mean alphahole. \u00a0I mean an\u00a0ass<\/em>. \u00a0The heroine is BEYOND TSTL. \u00a0There are things tripping us up every other line.<\/p>\n

And yet…these books can\u00a0sell<\/em>. \u00a0And sometimes, we\u00a0love\u00a0<\/em>them. \u00a0It’s confusing. \u00a0I told my kids that I think I had the answer to this figureed out and it’s pretty simple.<\/p>\n

I think, basically, there are three kinds of writers. \u00a0Now there are going to some variations and ‘subsets’, so to speak of these writers, but these are the ‘core’ types of writers. \u00a0Maybe the ‘archetypes’ of the writers out there.<\/p>\n

You’ve got trainwrecks, writers and storytellers.<\/p>\n

trainwrecks<\/h6>\n

The trainwrecks are the ones who can produce trashy crack. \u00a0It’s the\u00a0why am I reading this<\/em>…type of book. You can’t put it down. \u00a0You might want to, you might not. \u00a0Maybe it’s a ride on a rickety roller coaster and you’re loving it. \u00a0Or maybe it’s just a trainwreck and you want to look away and can’t.<\/p>\n

You might even be one of those people who love trainwrecks.<\/p>\n

The point is, that a trainwreck book is one that you know is flawed like hell but you can’t stop reading it. \u00a0Whether or not you’ll read another book by that author? Who knows. \u00a0Some trainwreck authors only have a few books in them and then they just…disappear. Some keep putting out trainwrecks and sometimes the writing improves, other times it doesn’t…the characters don’t grow, the stories don’t evolve.<\/p>\n

You love them…until you don’t.<\/p>\n

These writers don’t know much of anything about the craft <\/em>of writing.\u00a0Which is fine, because we all gotta start somewhere and we tend to start out crawling.<\/p>\n

Of course, the key here is that you gotta start to walk at some point.<\/p>\n

They never learn to walk, per se. They don’t try to grow their craft.<\/p>\n

Writers<\/h6>\n

Writers probably make up the biggest group. \u00a0They can tell a story. \u00a0That story may hold your interest, but you may or may not go back and buy more from them.<\/p>\n

More, they tend to improve over time.<\/p>\n

Some may be bigger names, some of them may be smaller names…some may never even get published.<\/p>\n

But they try to grow. They either consciously or unconsciously work to improve and their stories get better.<\/p>\n

Storytellers<\/h6>\n

These are the magicmakers. \u00a0In my book, these are the people like Lynn Viehl, Nora Roberts,\u00a0 Ilona Andrews, Nalini Singh and some of my newest favorites… Peter Clines and Marc Greaney.<\/p>\n

They have it down and a lot of them just come by it naturally. \u00a0That doesn’t mean they don’t work at it, because they absolutely do, but I think there is an inborn gift for storytelling that some people just have.<\/p>\n

They have\u00a0<\/em>it…and they\u00a0work<\/em>. \u00a0If you have that talent and then you push yourself, you create a story that is just magic.<\/p>\n

Storytellers\u00a0have that cracktastic appeal that a lot of the trainwreckers do, but they also understand the\u00a0craft<\/em> of writing and they work to improve.<\/p>\n

They left crawling and walking behind a long time ago–they were probably born to fly.<\/p>\n

These are the storytellers.<\/p>\n

So… that was the dinner conversation a few days ago. \u00a0And that was one of the more normal ones. \u00a0You should hear us when we talk about things like…\u00a0what if everything was made of strawberries…<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
