This story is set in Kit Colbana’s world. \u00a0It’s loosely connected, but can be read as a stand-alone. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\"MiserysWay300<\/a>A Kit Colbana World Short Story<\/h4>\n

Her name is Frankie. At least, that\u2019s what she calls herself.<\/p>\n

She looks human, but she\u2019s no more human than she is a faith-healer. That doesn\u2019t stop her from using her\u2026more unique abilities to take care of certain needs. It\u2019s those abilities that lead to a chance encounter with an unusual woman in Florida.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a chance encounter with fate that will set these two down a collision course with destiny.<\/p>\n

Excerpt<\/h4>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s crowded tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced up at the man who\u2019d slipped up to join me.\u00a0 I stood just outside the curtain of the tent.\u00a0 Through the slit, I could peer inside and the darkness of the night kept them from seeing me.\u00a0 It was one of the few remaining moments of solitude, of peace, that I\u2019d have for the rest of the night.<\/p>\n

Saleel\u2019s presence didn\u2019t disturb that solitude.<\/p>\n

He was as welcome as the whisper of air against my skin, as the twinkle of stars overhead.<\/p>\n

He was a reminder of what I did have\u2014even if I didn\u2019t have something as simple and coveted as humanity<\/em>, I had my life.\u00a0 I had freedom.\u00a0 And I had him as my companion.<\/p>\n

We shared a moment of comfortable silence before I looked back inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re restless,\u201d he said after another moment.<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t surprised he\u2019d noticed.\u00a0 Saleel noticed everything.<\/p>\n

I slanted a look up at him.\u00a0 \u201cI guess I\u2019m getting bored here.\u00a0 Ready to move on.\u00a0 Have you scouted out the next spot?\u201d<\/p>\n

Saleel lifted one shoulder.\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u00a0 Montana. \u00a0I tire of the heat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMontana?\u201d\u00a0 I grimaced and mentally shuddered.\u00a0 Summer was rapidly drawing to a close.\u00a0 That would mean cold<\/em>.\u00a0 Snow.\u00a0 Worse\u2026ice<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cI hate the cold.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019d spent many of my earliest years in the muggy heat of America\u2019s south\u2014or in the heart of Africa.\u00a0 Some of those years that hadn\u2019t been spent\u2026elsewhere.\u00a0 Heat was simply bred into my bones.\u00a0 I could handle the cold, but that didn\u2019t mean I liked it.<\/p>\n

Saleel\u2019s teeth flashed white in the faintest of smiles when he glanced at me.\u00a0 \u201cThen perhaps next time when I ask you if you have a preference, you should give me an answer.\u00a0 Instead, you say, Do whatever you want, Sal<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

He managed an imitation of my voice that was almost dead-on.<\/p>\n

I stuck my tongue out at him.<\/p>\n

He went back to staring into tent.\u00a0 \u201cOffer your tongue again, my angel, and I will make use of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yeah.\u00a0 Right.<\/p>\n

The two of us were like gasoline and fire and we both knew it. \u00a0Combustible\u2014and dangerous.<\/p>\n

\u201cPromises, promises,\u201d I said lightly and then I eased closer, bracing my shoulder on the lightweight metal of the door frame, gazing deeper into the tent.<\/p>\n

Saleel was right.<\/p>\n

I was restless.<\/p>\n

But I hadn\u2019t yet figured out why<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A hot summer wind caressed the back of my neck.\u00a0 I enjoyed it while I could.\u00a0 Once I got inside, the air would be stifling. Already, I was dreading it.\u00a0 I could smell the heat of too many bodies and the air was thick with sweat.\u00a0 Heavy with despair.<\/p>\n

Hope clung to many of the people who awaited me but hope was a capricious bitch. I could all but hear the cackling, gleeful laugh as she darted from one person to another, crooning\u2026you don\u2019t really think this will work, do you?\u00a0 You\u2019re going to die\u2026you\u2019re all going to die\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Fans churned from all corners, laboriously whirring away.\u00a0 They did little to cool the temperature, but at least the air kept moving.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t the heat, though, that plagued me.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t even the promise of death.\u00a0 People died.\u00a0 It was simply part of life.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t the despair or the misery\u2014the hunger inside me reached for that, but that wasn\u2019t what made me restless.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time,\u201d Saleel murmured.<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

But still, I didn\u2019t move, searching inside the tent.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrankie?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going.\u201d\u00a0 I took a deep breath and reached deep inside for the well of calm that would carry me through when I took another\u2019s pain inside me.\u00a0 I craved pain\u2014fed on it.\u00a0 That didn\u2019t mean it was pleasant.<\/p>\n
