contemporary romance<\/em><\/h3>\n

So I’ve had a few people ask when the next Barnes Brother book will be out. \u00a0I don’t have a date, but I do have news.<\/p>\n

Some of it is good. \u00a0There will be another title.<\/p>\n

Some of it is…well…eh. Decide for yourself.<\/p>\n

The next title will be\u00a0Ruined<\/em>, Sebestien’s story. \u00a0No release date yet. \u00a0For those who enjoy reading the series in ebook, hey…cool! \u00a0You’re all good.<\/p>\n

Sadly…for those who enjoy it in print, well…um.<\/p>\n

Crickets chirping.<\/p>\n

It won’t be available in print. Probably not at all. \u00a0My print sales from Berkley are dropping pretty steadily. \u00a0They aren’t willing to put it in print. \u00a0It’s going to release from their digital imprint. \u00a0It will be at a lower price, so that’s good, right?<\/p>\n

Hopefully, it will do well enough that I’ll be able to wrap up the series and write Travis’ book. \u00a0If not, well. \u00a0I dunno.<\/p>\n

Here’s a short snippet of the story…<\/p>\n

The low, monotonous beeping was annoying the fuck<\/em> out of him.<\/p>\n

It was almost as bad as the pain jabbing into his side.<\/p>\n

It was even worse than whatever the hell that weird smell was.<\/p>\n

It was almost like a\u2026<\/p>\n

His eyes flew open.<\/p>\n

Brilliant white met him and he squinted.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, sunshine.\u00a0 Welcome back.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sound of his oldest brother\u2019s voice had him groaning.\u00a0 Bright lights, Zane, headache.\u00a0 Had he gotten drunk? Was he hungover?<\/p>\n

\u201cHoney?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom?\u201d he whispered.\u00a0 Or tried.\u00a0 His throat was so dry, he didn\u2019t get a thing out.\u00a0 Clearing his throat, he tried again, but the pathetic whisper was so soft, he barely heard it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, honey. I\u2019m here.\u201d\u00a0 A hand slid into his.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re all here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho\u2019s we?\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cWhere\u2019s here?\u201d<\/p>\n

He tried to look around and realize he could only see with his right eye.\u00a0 Something covered the entire left side of his face.\u00a0 \u201cWhat the\u2026\u201d he reached up, the movement uncoordinated and stiff.\u00a0 He\u2019d barely touched the covering when Zane caught his hand.\u00a0 \u201cHold up, kid, okay?\u00a0 You\u2019ve gotta leave the bandage alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stilled. \u201cBandage?\u201d<\/p>\n

Zane\u2019s face went taut.<\/p>\n

Fear fluttered inside him.\u00a0 He looked around, understanding dawning.\u00a0 He was in the hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d he asked, forced to crane his head awkward so he could see everybody in the room.\u00a0 All of his brothers, his sister-in-law Abby along with the two soon<\/em> to be sisters-in-law Keelie and Ressa, his parents\u2026and Marin.\u00a0 Instinctively, he looked away from Marin. Since she seemed to be doing the same, he didn\u2019t see the problem there.<\/p>\n

Nobody answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d he shouted.<\/p>\n

\u201cBaby, it\u2019s going to be okay,\u201d his mother said, her voice gentle.<\/p>\n

He slammed his fist down.\u00a0 She stilled.<\/p>\n

Immediately, he regretted, and not just because it sent pain arcing through his side.<\/p>\n

\u201cSebestien.\u201d<\/p>\n

At Zach\u2019s voice, he looked away from his mother\u2019s averted face.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were out having dinner\u2014you\u2019d been with Monica,\u201d his brother said in a low voice.\u00a0 Low\u2014intense<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cDo you remember?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMonica\u2026\u201d Closing his eyes, he struggled to do just that. Remember<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cShe was going to kiss me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clouds half hid the memory but as he focused, they started to lift.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2026I didn\u2019t really much care if she did.\u00a0 Crazy\u2026as much as I missed her.\u00a0 I thought I\u2019d do almost anything to get her back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you remember what happened next?\u201d Zach asked tautly.<\/p>\n

Sebastien swept his gaze to his brother.<\/p>\n

Pain sliced through him\u2014his face, his side\u2014as memory sharpened. Clarified.<\/p>\n

\u201cHanson,\u201d he rasped.<\/p>\n

Clutching one hand in the sheets, he said, \u201cMonica.\u00a0 Is she\u2026Did he\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s fine.\u201d\u00a0 Abby moved forward and covered his fisted hand.\u00a0 \u201cHe didn\u2019t hurt her, honey.\u00a0 She\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sucked in a breath.\u00a0 \u201cGood.\u00a0 Good.\u00a0 So\u2026everything\u2019s okay, then, right?\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019ll heal up and\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The awkward silence had his stomach tilting sideways, like he\u2019d developed his very own Tilt A Whirl<\/em> right inside his gut.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cHanson\u2026\u201d Zach looked away, his shoulders tight. \u201cHanson\u2019s dead. And\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Sebastien went cold.<\/p>\n

Slowly, he flung his legs over the side of the bed.<\/p>\n

When his father moved to his side, he waved him away.<\/p>\n

Something jabbed in his arm and he scowled, staring at the IV tubing.\u00a0 With deliberate thoroughness, he peeled back the tape and pulled out the needle, ignoring his parents and his brothers.<\/p>\n

Blood dripped out as he rose and moved over to the mirror hanging over the sink.<\/p>\n

A heavy bandage covered the left side of face, from the just under his hairline, down to the jawbone, a bizarre Phantom of the Opera\u2014just no eyehole. He reached up and started to peel the tape away.<\/p>\n

\u201cDamn it, Sebastien, you\u2019re bleeding all over the place and you\u2019re going to rip the stitches out,\u201d Zach snarled at him, moving up to grab his hands.<\/p>\n

It was Zane who stopped him.<\/p>\n

Zane who came up and helped with the tape.<\/p>\n

Zane who took the discarded bandages and who used them to make a temporary one for the bloody place on his arm where the IV had been.<\/p>\n

And Zane was the one standing there when Sebastien force himself to look at his face.<\/p>\n

The scar ran from his forehead, just above the eyebrow, in jagged line, all the way down until it stopped about an inch away from the corner of his mouth. His eye was taped shut and when he tried to open it, instinctively, it hurt like a motherfucker.<\/p>\n

Numbness settled inside him.<\/p>\n

He would scar.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t even have to ask.<\/p>\n

He would scar, period.<\/p>\n

Turning away from the mirror, he looked at his family, from one brother to another and then at his parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to get your arm looked at, Seb,\u201d Zane said softly.<\/p>\n

Sebastien looked down at it almost absently.\u00a0 What the fuck did his arm matter?\u00a0 He pulled away the wadded up bandage and immediately, blood started to well up, forming a fat bead before it started to roll down his forearm once more.<\/p>\n

A soft sound caught his attention and he looked up, met Marin\u2019s gaze.<\/p>\n

She sucked in a soft breath and he looked away.<\/p>\n

He was fucking ruined<\/em>.<\/p>\n
