{"id":34382,"date":"2015-05-23T09:00:54","date_gmt":"2015-05-23T13:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?p=34382"},"modified":"2015-07-30T17:26:01","modified_gmt":"2015-07-30T21:26:01","slug":"final-protocol-up-for-preorder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2015\/05\/final-protocol-up-for-preorder\/","title":{"rendered":"Final Protocol&#8230;up for preorder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My first straight SF in&#8230;well&#8230;ever. \u00a0There\u00a0<em>is<\/em> a romantic sub-plot, so for those who need some romance, and for those who think&#8230;<em>ewww&#8230;yuck, romance&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jcdanielsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/FinalProtocol72lg-1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-845\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jcdanielsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/FinalProtocol72lg-1-200x300.jpg?resize=200%2C300\" alt=\"FP\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re in the mood to watch, he might let you. After he\u2019s done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked away from the couple to find Garner staring at me with his dark, dead eyes. \u201cWatching isn\u2019t really my thing, Garner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You prefer to fuck my brother and try to play cunt-games with him.\u201d He leaned in, the smell of synthetic garlic heavy on his breath. \u201cThe games don\u2019t work. But it\u2019s fun to watch you try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My gut rolled. <em>Play<\/em> with his brother. If only I had much choice in it. I\u2019d stay on the other side of the galaxy if I had any say in the matter. But I didn\u2019t mention that. If either of them had any idea just how deep my revulsion ran, it would become a tool, a weapon against me. Instead of showing how I felt, I reached up and touched a finger to his cheek. \u201cYou spend an awful lot of time worrying about the games I play with your brother, Garner\u2026 What\u2019s the matter?\u201d I leaned in closer and pressed my lips to his ear. \u201cAre you jealous?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I pushed around him and headed for the center of the dance floor.<\/p>\n<p>You might think he\u2019d have his offices in the back. Or down below the floor, in a dungeon, where monsters like him should rot.<\/p>\n<p>But no. He kept his offices high above, and if I wanted in during business hours, I had to take the tube in the middle of the floor. Where he could see me coming.<\/p>\n<p>Garner was right behind me.<\/p>\n<p>I pretended not to notice.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t that hard. If he were going to try and hurt me, he\u2019d have had more of his men with him, and he would have done it outside.<\/p>\n<p>That meant I had a bigger fear to concern myself with. I\u2019d rather take pain over his other forms of keeping me in line. Pain was easy. The humiliations\u2026 Shudders gripped me, wrenched at me, even as I fought not to let Garner see any sign of what I was feeling.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what he\u2019d said to get me here, my <em>handler<\/em> wouldn\u2019t just let me walk away from a job like that.<\/p>\n<p>There would be a reckoning.<\/p>\n<p>And if he wouldn\u2019t take it in blood, he\u2019d take it in flesh.<\/p>\n<p>My body was already burning.<\/p>\n<p>My soul was already screaming.<\/p>\n<p>A hand came up behind me and shoved me into the tube and then Garner crowded in around me.<\/p>\n<p>As it sucked us up into the air, I bowed my head, my hands braced on the smooth, clear \u2019stene surface.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d get through this.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d done it before.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d even do this job, I thought, just because doing it took me away from Jakor. Maybe this would be the last one. Maybe when it was done, I\u2019d guide my transport into the nearest star and end it, swift and easy. Or I could just fuck with the wiring on my transport, dump the oxygen supply\u2014I knew how to do that. I\u2019d killed one of my targets that way once. It wasn\u2019t a pleasant way to die, but I didn\u2019t need pleasant. I just needed it done and final.<\/p>\n<p>Anything to be away from here, forever.<\/p>\n<p>The tube opened up and Garner slid past me.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped outside and slowly lifted my head. Darkness greeted me. This\u2026this wasn\u2019t good. Heart hammering against my ribs, sweat trickling down between my breasts, my shoulder blades, a dull memory worked its way free. It was an old memory; more than a decade had passed since that day. The first time I truly <em>remembered<\/em> much of anything\u2026including the man who awaited me somewhere in the darkness.<\/p>\n<p><em>He owed me money. But he was too afraid to face me himself\u2026so I\u2019m taking you instead. You\u2019ll have to serve in his stead\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And here I was. Still serving. Still trapped.<\/p>\n<p>It would end when I made it end.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve years. It was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Yes. I\u2019d do this final job, and then I\u2019d find a way to end this. I\u2019d either find that botanist, or I\u2019d find my own end.
