At least, that\u2019s what she calls herself.<\/p>\n<p>She looks human, but she\u2019s no more human than she is a faith-healer.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t stop her from using her\u2026more unique abilities to take care of certain needs.\u00a0 It\u2019s those abilities that lead to a chance encounter with an unusual woman in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a chance encounter with fate that will set these two down a collision course with destiny.<\/p>\n<p><em>This short story is loosely connected to the Kit Colbana Files.\u00a0 Can be read as a stand-alone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Due out in June. \u00a0Preorder links coming soonish&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>snippet<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the emotions in my head, the misery and easing of it stopped crashing and swelling inside me, coming to an uneasy sort of peace.<\/p>\n<p>Sleep.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d sleep\u2014right there\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The sound had me coming up off the bed and landing in a crouch.\u00a0 Too many years of fleeing from those who might yet hunt me had me drawing my weapon. \u00a0The blade was as long as my forearm, the metal matte black\u2014it didn\u2019t reflect any light, not that there was much of it in my room.\u00a0 I\u2019d had the blade designed after a flash of light had almost given me away years ago.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t make that mistake again. Not ever.<\/p>\n<p>Head cocked, I listened.<\/p>\n<p>Not even the brush of a shoe on pavement was that quiet.\u00a0 But somebody was outside, on the farthest edges of the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>I crept to the walls.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn\u2019t turned on the lights.\u00a0 I\u2019m just as at home in the shadows and darkness as I am in the light.\u00a0 Comes from living in a perpetual gloom for the first two or three decades of my life.\u00a0 What might seem an unending, unyielding blackness to others was no hindrance to me.\u00a0 Placing one foot in front of the other, carefully placing each step, I made my way to the window, stopping just at the edge of the frame so I could peer out.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, the air in the room stirred.<\/p>\n<p>There was no sound to indicate who it was, but I knew, nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are clever, aren\u2019t they?\u201d I said softly.<\/p>\n<p>Saleel\u2019s scarred hand touched my shoulder.\u00a0 \u201cShall I take care of them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Saleel\u2019s mind, there was only one way to take care of something.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>If I really wanted to take care of them, we both knew I could do it myself.\u00a0 Just as we both knew that Saleel considered it his job.\u00a0 His\u2026duty.\u00a0 Even an honor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.\u00a0 They were closer now.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t see her, which was an oddity, considering how pale she was.\u00a0 I could barely see him, but he was a witch.\u00a0 I could smell a witch a mile away.\u00a0 One that pretty was worth keeping an eye on, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wonder what they want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t approve of you,\u201d Saleel said, and his disgust was so thick, I could have spread it on a slice of toast.<\/p>\n<p>I slid him a smirk over my shoulder.\u00a0 \u201cNeither did you\u2026once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes, nearly black even in the bright of day, held mine.\u00a0 \u201cI did not make a judgment simply because I saw you spread your hands out over a room of ill people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u00a0 You judged me for a different reason entirely.\u201d \u00a0I gave him an arch look.<\/p>\n<p>A grim smile curled his lips.<\/p>\n<p>Our history was complicated.<\/p>\n<p>Very complicated.<\/p>\n<p>I held out a hand.\u00a0 \u201cCome.\u00a0 I\u2019m not in the mood for distractions tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could practically taste his annoyance as he placed his hand in mine.\u00a0 He must have been in the mood to play cat and mouse.<\/p>\n<p>Poor Saleel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a Kit-related thing&#8230;not a Kit thing.
