Carefully, he folded the paper.\u00a0 Then he tucked it inside the journal, keeping it closed.<\/p>\n

He couldn\u2019t look at the second journal, not just yet.<\/p>\n

It was strange.<\/p>\n

For so many years he\u2019d felt little.\u00a0 Except the rage. Rage could always cut through.\u00a0 On the rare occasion when he felt something beyond that hot, heavy burn, it was usually blunted, coming to him from a distance.\u00a0 The few times it didn\u2019t happen that way, it was when Abraham had managed to make him laugh or\u2026<\/p>\n

The skin on the nape of his neck stood up.<\/p>\n

His blood started to pump.<\/p>\n

Slowly, he shifted his gaze and found himself staring across the neat, tidy little lawn.<\/p>\n

There.\u00a0 That was the other thing he felt, a bizarre mix of need, longing and a twist in his heart that he couldn\u2019t fully understand.\u00a0 It only happened around one person.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t a surprise that she\u2019d found him here.<\/p>\n

Nor was it a surprise when his heart did that odd little twist.<\/p>\n

She was the other person who managed to make him feel<\/em>.<\/p>\n

She made him want.<\/p>\n

She made him need<\/em>.<\/p>\n

She made him regret, too.<\/p>\n

Regret that he needed to push her away, regret that he couldn\u2019t reach for the way he wanted.<\/p>\n

Regret that he wasn\u2019t as strong as he should be, because even as he told himself to push her away, she started up the walk, the short skirt she wore barely clinging to her thighs and all he could think about was pulling her into his lap so that the skirt rode higher and he could cup her hips, pull her down to straddle him.<\/p>\n

Vivid, overbright starbursts seemed to explode behind his eyes as that fantasy played out in his mind.\u00a0 It would be so easy.\u00a0 This was a secluded street and people had finally given up on the rubbernecking.\u00a0 Hardly anybody drove down the street to check out the burnt out wreck of the Frampton house.\u00a0 He could pull that stretchy bit of fabric up and be inside her in two minutes.\u00a0 It would be so easy to just lose himself to her.<\/p>\n

She came to a halt in front of him while his blood pounded in slow, steady waves, while need clenched inside him like a fist.<\/p>\n

Tell her to leave<\/em>, common sense dictated.\u00a0 He\u2019d already made the decision he needed to make.<\/p>\n

But his head, his heart, his cock didn\u2019t want to listen.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey,\u201d she said, her red-slicked lips curving up.<\/p>\n

He stared at her mouth, thought about seeing that mouth open, seeing it glide down his chest.<\/p>\n

Blinking, he managed, barely, to look away.\u00a0 \u201cHey back.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was yet another thing he lacked, the ability to talk, even to her, about anything that didn\u2019t involve getting her naked and fucking her.\u00a0 Naked wasn\u2019t even necessary as long as he could be inside her, lose himself to her, hide away from the demons that chased him.<\/p>\n

But if he kept doing that, all those demons were going to start chasing her, too.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t worth a whole hell of a lot and he didn\u2019t care about a whole hell of a lot.\u00a0 But he\u2019d burn this whole damn town to the ground before he let anything from his past start to haunt her. Every moment of peace he\u2019d ever known had come from her.\u00a0 She mattered, more than anything or anybody else in his miserable world.<\/p>\n

So instead of reaching for her, he stared out at the water, acutely aware as she sat down at his side.\u00a0 The journals sat at the other and he resisted the urge to grab them, disappear inside the house, hide them away from her.\u00a0 Hide them away, hide their secrets, as if that would make the truth any less than true.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t blame that kid,\u201d Sybil said out of the blue.<\/p>\n

Caught up in his own head, he barely understood what she meant.\u00a0 Looking over at her, he tracked her gaze and then, as a shiver of cold raced up his spine, he looked back over the water.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlenty of people don\u2019t.\u00a0 Too bad he couldn\u2019t find a way to trap his dad and uncle in there, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sybil murmured, \u201cHis uncle\u2019s brains splattered all over the chief\u2019s wall.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe went too easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrue.\u00a0 But he is still gone.\u201d\u00a0 Her gaze came over to him.\u00a0 \u201cWe fell asleep on you.\u00a0 What did you think about the movie?\u201d<\/p>\n

He frowned, tried to remember something about it.\u00a0 The boy. Wands.\u00a0 A rock.\u00a0 Then he shrugged. \u201cWhat sort of name is Snape?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sybil laughed.\u00a0 \u201cAn interesting one.\u00a0 For an interesting character.\u00a0 Is he a good guy or a bad guy?\u201d<\/p>\n

The question caught him offguard.\u00a0 Then he looked down.\u00a0 \u201cWhat does it matter?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, if you want to watch more of the series with us, it would be kind of fun for me to know now, what you think of him.\u00a0 He plays a big part in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not watching more.<\/em>\u00a0 That was what he should tell her.\u00a0 Sighing, he looked away.\u00a0 Everything he should do, he couldn\u2019t do.\u00a0 It had been like that for most of his life.\u00a0 He should found a better way to make people listen.\u00a0 He should have fought harder.\u00a0 He should have run sooner.<\/p>\n

Then there were the things he shouldn\u2019t<\/em> have done. He shouldn\u2019t have involved Lana.\u00a0 He shouldn\u2019t have stayed in town. He shouldn\u2019t have reached for Sybil that first night.<\/p>\n

A hand reached up, touched his cheek.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re always so serious.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLittle reason to be otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrue.\u201d\u00a0 She moved then and he didn\u2019t even have time to brace himself before she had settled herself in his lap, one leg planted on either side of his hips.\u00a0 Her hands came up, cupped his face.\u00a0 \u201cHow much longer until you decide to tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

His hands moved of their own volition, fingers splayed wide across satiny soft thighs.\u00a0 \u201cTell you what, Sybil?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t play games with me.\u201d She dipped her head so that her hair fell around them like a curtain.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019ve never done it before.\u00a0 Don\u2019t start now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noise clamored in the back of his head, all that chaos rising to a roar as he stared into those beautiful eyes.\u00a0 They slid between gold and green and right now, they all but glowed as she watched him.<\/p>\n

Send her away.\u00a0 Tell her.<\/em><\/p>\n

He slid his hands up, cupping her ass. And he groaned when he found her naked under that sorry excuse for a skirt.\u00a0 \u201cI keep thinking it\u2019s time to tell you to just go.\u00a0 To stay away from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what I thought.\u201d\u00a0 She rubbed her mouth against his.\u00a0 \u201cWhy don\u2019t you do it, then?\u00a0 So I can ignore you and we can fight it out?\u201d<\/p>\n

The cool silk of her hair brushed against his cheek.\u00a0 He tangled one hand in it.\u00a0 \u201cThis isn\u2019t a game anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt never was.\u201d\u00a0 She eased back, watching him with knowing eyes.<\/p>\n

He curled his lip.\u00a0 \u201cIt was one thing when you fucking some Amish builder.\u00a0 It\u2019s another thing when it\u2019s me<\/em>, possible murder suspect, sick degenerate.\u00a0 It\u2019s just a matter of time before the cops decide to start pulling me, demanding answers about what happened the night I disappeared.\u00a0 Just a matter of time before everything comes out in the open.\u00a0 When nobody knew\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

She lifted a hand and pressed her finger to his lips.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always knew.\u201d<\/p>\n
