{"id":34195,"date":"2015-02-03T08:00:37","date_gmt":"2015-02-03T13:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/?p=34195"},"modified":"2015-02-01T15:03:22","modified_gmt":"2015-02-01T20:03:22","slug":"kits-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shilohwalker.com\/website\/2015\/02\/kits-back\/","title":{"rendered":"Kit&#8217;s back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jcdanielsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/rubberducky.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-837\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jcdanielsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/rubberducky.png?resize=577%2C385\" alt=\"rubberducky\" width=\"577\" height=\"385\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Who would be <em>stupid<\/em> enough to try and get into a fight here?<\/p>\n<p>Answer: <em>Me<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In my defense, I hadn\u2019t <em>planned<\/em> on the fight.<\/p>\n<p>It was the crazy-eyed shifter who\u2019d crashed into me at the buffet\u2014<em>she <\/em>started it.<\/p>\n<p>The buffet was loaded with everything from raw cuts of meat\u2014for the shifters\u2014to the most beautiful sugar-spun pastries you could imagine. I was staying far away from the area where things were still bleeding and focusing on the sweets. The sparkly little ball of puffy dough should have looked too pretty to eat.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d eaten five of them before I could stop myself and was pondering a sixth when she moved in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>She was so close, I could feel the ripple of her energy on my skin\u2014<em>way<\/em> too close and I didn\u2019t like it.<\/p>\n<p>I backed up two inches before I realized what I was doing and then I wanted to kick myself.<\/p>\n<p>I already recognized the feel of shifter\u2014and the feel of bitch.<\/p>\n<p>A smug smile curled her lips and I knew I\u2019d just broken one of the cardinal rules when dealing with shapeshifters.<\/p>\n<p>Never back down until they throw you down or your life depends on it.<\/p>\n<p>I could brazen it out, though.<\/p>\n<p>I can brazen my way through anything. With a bright smile, I met her gaze. \u201cHello.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She just continued to stare.<\/p>\n<p>A chill raced down my spine, but I ignored it and selected another sweet, this one a delicate cake that resembled a miniature pumpkin\u2014complete with the grinning jack o\u2019 lantern.<\/p>\n<p>She caught my hand before I could pop the cake in my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t raised very well, were you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice grated across my nerves.<\/p>\n<p>The words, too, rubbed me raw, but while I can\u2019t lie and say I\u2019ve accepted my less than desirable upbringing, I <em>had<\/em> come to grips with the fact that it wasn\u2019t <em>me<\/em> who screwed up.<\/p>\n<p>With an easy smile, I said, \u201cNope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, moving into her grip, I waited and when her grip slackened just the slightest, I twisted away. People never expect you to move <em>in<\/em> when you\u2019re being forcibly restrained.<\/p>\n<p>Once her hand fell away, I backed up\u2014fast.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d already tried to grab me again, but now there was five feet between us\u2014and eyes on us.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of advancing, she flared her nostrils and scented the air. \u201cHuman,\u201d she pronounced and she said it the same way I might say <em>dead mouse<\/em>\u2014with utter distaste.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuilty.\u201d I gave her a wide grin. \u201cAt least, partially guilty. There\u2019s something more in the bloodline than just human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll that matters is the human,\u201d she said, shaking her head. \u201cNo wonder you have no manners. I\u2019m curious just what the Alpha sees in you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few more gazes slid our way. Most people only glanced out of curiosity before looking away, but more than a few started to watch us and the low murmur of voices in the immediate vicinity went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d I still held my plate. I dragged my finger through the sugary powder that had fallen onto it, and then, still watching her, I popped my finger into my mouth. \u201cMaybe he likes <em>human<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor meat.\u201d She all but purred it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Meat<\/em>. What the more asshole shifters called those they considered <em>prey<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that was what he was looking for, I think he would have moved on by now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d She gave a condescending laugh. \u201cPrecious, it\u2019s only pity that holds him. Pity. Fascination. He\u2019ll tire of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A heavy, familiar tread came to my ears and I knew he was near. Near enough to hear us both and it sent a twist through my gut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll tire of you,\u201d she said again and now she smiled. \u201cYou can\u2019t even satisfy his hungers now. Your fear is like a stink in the air. You aren\u2019t even a woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlice,\u201d a low voice said.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t Damon.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t bother to look from her to Chang. I just put the plate down and leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe I\u2019m not a <em>woman<\/em>, but at least I\u2019m not a hyena,\u201d I said, curling my lip at her.<\/p>\n<p>A low, ugly growl escaped her and I saw Chang catch her arm. \u201cEnough,\u201d he said, his voice a biting command. \u201cYou will leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She tensed, like she\u2019d ignore him, but then she inclined her head.<\/p>\n<p>I saw the promise of retribution in her eyes, though, as she headed down the buffet, her back turned to both me and Chang.
