Am I interrupting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chang had an innate courtesy. He\u2019d brush it off. <em>Of course not. How are you, would you like some tea<\/em>\u2014<\/p>\n<p>To my surprise, the only response he made initially was to sigh.<\/p>\n<p>It was a soft, heavy sigh, one that carried a world of weariness. \u201cI had to call a family up north with grim news. An awful sort of call to make.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2026\u201d I stopped for a moment. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. Are there\u2026problems?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An odd question to ask, maybe, but the look on Chang\u2019s face wasn\u2019t one that spoke of somebody who\u2019d lived to see a ripe old age and then died peacefully in his sleep.<\/p>\n<p>From the corner of his eye, he watched me. There was a strange expression to his features, as though he wanted to say something, but then he sighed and said, \u201cNo. Sit. I\u2019ll fix tea. You\u2019ll tell me why you\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no point in arguing.<\/p>\n<p>Chang had fallen back on his role of courtesy.<\/p>\n<p>There was no getting out of it now\u2014and no chance of tugging out any details about that phone call, either.<\/p>\n<p>I waited until I had my tea in hand\u2014tea was a personal addiction of mine, almost as bad as the soaps and lotions and other girly things I bought obsessively. Breathing in the sweet and spicy scent, I sighed. I doctored it with sugar and cream. I liked my tea, with just a little more sugar than most people. Or a <em>lot<\/em> more sugar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow you can drink it that way confounds me,\u201d Chang said. \u201cI keep trying to break you of that habit, but it doesn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo each their own.\u201d I shrugged and took my first sip. Perfect.<\/p>\n<p>Chang had a look of amusement and revulsion on his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you spend a good ten years of your life scrapping just to get enough water and food to fill the hole in your belly, you develop odd cravings.\u201d I shrugged it off.<\/p>\n<p>Chang\u2019s eyes fell away.<\/p>\n<p>I scowled inwardly, wished I hadn\u2019t said anything. I\u2019d dealt with more abuse in my life than most people had ever heard of\u2014I\u2019d come to grips with what my family had done and generally dealt with it, in my own unique sort of way.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, I was even able to not be ashamed of it. But it made other people uncomfortable. Honestly, that\u2019s just plain stupid to me\u2014it happened to <em>me<\/em>\u2014if I can deal with it, then why can\u2019t they?<\/p>\n<p>But then I had to deal with people looking away, or lapsing into silence\u2026or just\u2026fading away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry,\u201d I said, my voice tense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d Chang said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him, opened my mouth\u2014then snapped it shut. \u201cFuck it. Never mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he was too insightful, by far. Unlike many shifters I knew, he didn\u2019t just go by what his senses told him. He <em>looked<\/em> at people. Saw beneath the surface. Sometimes, he saw so deep, it pissed me off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not aggravated with you for speaking of your childhood,\u201d he said softly. \u201cIn a way, it\u2026humbles me. I know you don\u2019t always speak freely of your past, Kit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rose.<\/p>\n<p>The languid way he moved couldn\u2019t be called pacing, not by any means.<\/p>\n<p>But Chang rarely made wasted moves and the way he moved from the window at the back of his office to his wall of weapons then to his desk to straighten the non-existent clutter there before repeating the circuit was nothing <em>but<\/em> wasted movement. And it was done with all the elegance, grace and speed he did everything else with. \u201cAt the same time, the thought that any soul could treat a child as I know you were treated makes me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked up.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in all the time I\u2019d known him, I saw a faint glow roll across his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The flash was gone so fast, I couldn\u2019t even place it\u2014just a glow of color too light to belong in that dark gaze, and then it was gone. \u201cIt angers me. Children should be treasured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s how the world works sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes held mine. \u201cAnd sometimes, the world sucks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve found myself thinking that a lot lately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet another reason I like you, Kit. You are a wise woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that, I snorted. \u201cI\u2019m a lot of things\u2014wise isn\u2019t one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He chuckled and the tension in the air passed. He returned to his seat and faced me. \u201cLet\u2019s discuss why you\u2019re here. Not that I\u2019m not delighted to see you, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d never say it, but I suspected he had things to do, secrets to pass on and people who needed to kill or be killed.<\/p>\n<p>That was his job, after all.<\/p>\n<p>Since I respected that, I didn\u2019t beat around the bush.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m tracking down\u2014or trying to track down\u2014some information. I could use your help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He arched a brow as he lifted his tea cup to his lips.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d help if he could. I knew that. Just like I knew he\u2019d stonewall me if he couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNHs are disappearing. I need to know about any shifters who have gone missing\u2026specifically some in Georgia. I need information and if anybody has it, it\u2019s you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cup froze at his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Without taking a sip, he lowered it. Then he put it down and moved behind his desk to stare out the window. \u201cWho have you been talking to, Kit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I started to move my knee back and forth. \u201cAm I going to sound terribly childish if I say I asked you first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSound as childish as you want. But you\u2019re more likely to get answers from me if you cooperate.\u201d His eyes narrowed ever so slightly. Then a faint smile appeared on his face. \u201cYou can always ask Damon. However, if you wanted to do that, you would have. You often end up in messes that worry him, a fact I\u2019m sure you\u2019re aware of. This is likely why you came to me instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re telling me this because\u2026\u201d I drummed my fingers on the arm of the chair as I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly two people possess the information you\u2019re looking for\u2014or possess an in-depth knowledge of it. That <em>I<\/em> know of. Damon hasn\u2019t spoken to you\u2014he wouldn\u2019t, not about this.
