I mean, you&#8217;re hardly ever bored. \u00a0You can look at a corkscrew and get an idea. \u00a0You can ride the Haunted Mansion ride at Disney World and have an idea for a book (or two). \u00a0You can go to Disney World and write the whole damn trip off\u00a0<em>because<\/em> you had an idea (or two) for a book&#8211;then sold it!<\/p>\n<p>But then there are times when you&#8217;re up until 3am-because the voices in your head just won&#8217;t shut up. \u00a0Yes, voices, because that&#8217;s how my stories come to me. \u00a0People talk to me. \u00a0These are my characters. \u00a0I&#8217;ve mentioned before that I feel more like a narrator than anything else, because I&#8217;m just taking down the notes for the people who are living out the stories that happen in my head. \u00a0So imagine these people&#8230;living in your head&#8230;and they\u00a0<em>never shut up<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s been my head for the past month. \u00a0Several shiny, dazzling new ideas and I&#8217;m letting them all out to play before I knuckle down and get to work on RS project #2.<\/p>\n<p>Which I have to start on this week.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with letting them all out to play is that they don&#8217;t want to stop playing.<\/p>\n<p>They don&#8217;t want to shut up.<\/p>\n<p>They don&#8217;t want to let me sleep. \u00a0They don&#8217;t want to let me think or read or do anything but write their story. \u00a0They&#8217;d take me over and turn me into a&#8230;a STEPFORD writer or something if I let them.<\/p>\n<p>O.O<\/p>\n<p>Maybe this shouldn&#8217;t be a\u00a0<em>down<\/em> side to be a writer, but it&#8217;s exhausting. \u00a0Too many noises inside the noggin.<\/p>\n<p>So this weekend, I shut down.<\/p>\n<p>I barely read email, I didn&#8217;t open my laptop. \u00a0I took a bubblebath or two. \u00a0I watched tv. \u00a0I read books. \u00a0I went to church. I went to the mall.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, I\u00a0<em>did<\/em> glance at my email&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>And I saw one I&#8217;d been hoping to see.<\/p>\n<p>From editor M. with St. Martins.<\/p>\n<p>About RS book 1.<\/p>\n<p><em>I&#8217;m loving this&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hot damn, yes. \u00a0This is the upside to be a writer. \u00a0When somebody loves a book.<\/p>\n<p>Now maybe I can shut up those many voices and focus on the one voice I need to focus on.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8230; snippet. \u00a0This is from book #1. \u00a0Right now, I&#8217;m calling it\u00a0<em>Nothing but Trouble,<\/em> but that title might change. \u00a0No release date, etc available right now.<\/p>\n<p>But let me introduce Neve McKay.<\/p>\n<p>~*~<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Home<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Her throat clogged from the memories and she blew out a breath.\u00a0 She\u2019d let herself get all sentimental and stupid later.\u00a0 For now, though, she was going to have herself that damn beer and figure out her next step\u2014and decide if she was going to call her brother sister right away, or wait until tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Some frisson of nerves twisted inside her at the thought of trying to deal with the rift she\u2019d caused in her family, but she\u2019d deal with that when the time came.\u00a0 All of that was for later.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a drink,\u201d she told herself.<\/p>\n<p>And with that in mind, she started toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>She had to take a minute to acclimate herself once she ducked inside.<\/p>\n<p>The few glimpses she\u2019d had inside the dive that had been Treasure Island didn\u2019t match up with what was before her now.\u00a0\u00a0 The servers wore kilts\u2014shorter lengths for the girls, although nothing that would make their mothers hide their eyes if they bent over\u2014while the guys had a similar style that hit the knee.<\/p>\n<p>She smirked, amused.\u00a0 So they were going for a Scottish theme?\u00a0 And still using the name <em>Treasure Island<\/em>?\u00a0 <em>Oooookkayyy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>To each their own, she mused as she wound her way through the crowd, ducking her head when somebody looked at her too long, averting her face when somebody looked familiar.<\/p>\n<p>She had to avert her face a <em>lot<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Treasure wasn\u2019t a big town\u2014population at the last census was just under nine thousand.\u00a0 Her graduating class hadn\u2019t even topped two hundred.\u00a0 Just in the short walk from the door to the bar, she\u2019d heard several familiar names and seen people she hadn\u2019t seen in eight years.<\/p>\n<p>But she hadn\u2019t seen the people who counted the most, and that was all that mattered.<\/p>\n<p>As long as she could brace herself before she had to see them, then everything would be just fine and dandy.<\/p>\n<p>Spying an empty seat, she slid onto and looked up at the bar.\u00a0 She hooked her backpack on the little hook in front of her and shifted to keep it between her legs.\u00a0 She\u2019d had people try to relieve her of her belongings more than once.<\/p>\n<p>Breathing out a sigh of relief, she let herself relax.\u00a0 Now\u2026for that drink\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell.\u00a0 \u2018Allo.\u00a0 What can I get you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the sound of that voice, a shiver raced down her spine and a punch of heat\u2014something she hadn\u2019t felt in far too long spread through her, warming her from head to toe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are times when being a writer feels like the best damn job in the world. \u00a0Seriously.
