In that moment, I came awake, my body shuddering as pain gripped me.<\/p>\n

I gasped and in a blink, two men stood over me.<\/p>\n

One was Will and I glared at him balefully.<\/p>\n

Okay, yeah, I\u2019d been the one to pounce on his back and send the two of us tumbling to the ground\u2014or\u2026through <\/em>it?<\/p>\n

I still didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

But whatever had happened, it resulted in me hurting more than I could remember hurting, short of dying.<\/p>\n

And I didn\u2019t think that was getting ready.<\/p>\n

But then my gaze skipped over and hit the other man.<\/p>\n

Open your mouth now\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

I sucked in a breath and that very action brought tears to my eyes, but it wasn\u2019t enough to make me look away from him.<\/p>\n

Silvered moonlight washed the color from his eyes, from his hair, leaving him cut with swathes of pale light and deep shadow.<\/p>\n

His face was harder.<\/p>\n

Grimmer.<\/p>\n

But\u2026<\/p>\n

My throat locked.<\/p>\n

A name sprung to my lips, but instinct had me locking it back.<\/p>\n

Thom\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Open your mouth now<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Shaken, I tore my gaze away.\u00a0 Unable to find a single thing to look at, save for his profile or the star-studded sky overhead, I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n

Thom<\/em>.\u00a0 His name was Thom.\u00a0 Thomas\u2026Thomas Finn.\u00a0 It connected in my head.\u00a0 Reflexively, I clenched my hands into fists.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you remember what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

The low, cool voice forced my attention away from Thom and I found myself looking at Will.<\/p>\n

Oh, bite me<\/em>.\u00a0 The comment burned on the tip of my tongue, but I held it back.\u00a0 It was my own damn fault, I was lying there, feeling like I\u2019d been worked over by a couple of the meaner demons\u2014there were some who liked to eat people. Literally.\u00a0 They were vicious and once I\u2019d stumbled across a group of them, interrupted the meal time.\u00a0 If I hadn\u2019t had the Colt I coddled like a baby, I never would have made it out of that alive.<\/p>\n

Two of them had still gotten their hands on me and I\u2019d spent two weeks pissing blood and eating nothing any harder than mashed potatoes while healed up over the damage they\u2019d done me.<\/p>\n

It was the most damage I\u2019d ever taken.<\/p>\n

Right now? I didn\u2019t feel quite<\/em> that bad.\u00a0 But it was close.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember?\u201d\u00a0 I curled my lip at him as I slowly worked on getting my arms under me.\u00a0 That hurt.\u00a0 I eased upright.\u00a0 That hurt worse<\/em>.\u00a0 Something ground inside me and I gasped.\u00a0 Okay, broken ribs.\u00a0 Lovely.\u00a0 Panting, I made it upright and saw that Will was watching me with unsympathetic eyes.\u00a0 Off to the side\u2026I swallowed, tried not to let myself think about him, his name\u2026his hands on me.\u00a0 I remembered that.\u00a0 Bits and pieces of a life I\u2019d suspected but never really remembered.\u00a0 That had changed now.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure.\u201d\u00a0 I settled my weight back on my hands, doggedly focusing on Will\u2019s face.\u00a0 \u201cI remember you grabbing me, knocking me out.\u00a0 Then I\u2019m in a hotel room and you won\u2019t let me leave.\u00a0 You yammering in my ear\u2014then inside my head<\/em>\u2014and then without explaining jackshit\u2014you tell me I\u2019m free to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silver flashed in those eyes.\u00a0 A silver glow<\/em>.\u00a0 It was eerie as hell.<\/p>\n

I tensed and braced myself to grab for a weapon, only to remember he\u2019d taken them all.\u00a0 And I hadn\u2019t gotten them back.<\/p>\n

His voice was still soft as he asked, \u201cDo you remember what happened next?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, yeah.\u00a0 That was the Tilt-A-Whirl<\/em> ride from hell, man.\u00a0 Now.\u00a0 Where are my weapons?\u00a0 Get them and I\u2019ll get out of your hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWill you\u2026\u201d He drew those words out, a thin, mocking layer of amusement under them as he rose and turned.<\/p>\n

I flinched at the sound of the next voice.\u00a0 \u201cShe\u2019s human.\u201d<\/p>\n
