Adam didn\u2019t know what drove him.<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t hear anything.<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t see anything.<\/p>\n
But awareness rippled through him, his skin prickling as he slowly lowered his hands and lifted his head, staring up through the night at the darkened house before him.<\/p>\n
There, at the window of the room he\u2019d given her.\u00a0 He saw nothing, save the ripple of the curtain, the pale material pulled back.<\/p>\n
Then, something shifted and she appeared.\u00a0 All he could see was her hand as she lifted it, pressed it to the glass.<\/p>\n
The next few seconds were just a haze on his memory.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t remember crossing the sidewalk, unlocking the door.\u00a0 He might have ran, raced the entire way and he could believe it, because when he came to a halt in the doorway of her room, it seemed like an eternity later, like an instant later, and his breath came in harsh, ragged pants.<\/p>\n
She stared at him.<\/p>\n
If she\u2019d looked worried or nervous or startled, he could have turned and walked away.<\/p>\n
She just stared at him, the sexy, sleek, horn-rimmed glasses a shield, hiding luminous eyes. In the dim light of the room, he couldn\u2019t clearly make out her face but he didn\u2019t need to. Every feature was etched on his memory.\u00a0 From then to now. He could recall her in detail.<\/p>\n
He crossed the floor to her, his boots thudding on the floor, his heart thudding against his chest and his breath still coming in harsh, uneven rasps.<\/p>\n
He reached up and pulled the glasses off, waited for her to do something, say something.<\/p>\n
She should<\/em>, he thought.\u00a0 She would<\/em>. She wasn\u2019t one of the women who came to him for this, who know what he was\u2026<\/p>\nSuddenly shame twisted in him.<\/p>\n
Rita had needed just that from last night. Comfort.\u00a0 A friend in the night. If he\u2019d let her turn to him, maybe she\u2019d be alive.\u00a0 But he hadn\u2019t been able to give it to her and now she was gone.<\/p>\n
And he didn\u2019t care<\/em>.\u00a0 Oh, he cared about the fact that his friend was gone, but instead of mourning her like he knew he should, what he wanted to do was just reach for her and have what he\u2019d wanted, needed.\u00a0 As he worried, as he wondered, as he needed and prayed and tried to lose himself in everybody but the woman he wanted.<\/p>\nAdam looked down, stared at the glasses he held.\u00a0 Walk away<\/em>.\u00a0 He needed to do that.<\/p>\nHe needed to walk away, if for no other reason than because he needed to be able to live with himself in the morning. He was used to being used.\u00a0 He used plenty of women. He had to do something to numb the pain, smother the guilt.\u00a0 But he couldn\u2019t use her\u2014she was the source of his pain, his guilt, his need\u2026his everything.\u00a0 And it would kill something inside him if she just wanted to use him.<\/p>\n
Swallowing the bitter ache that had settled in his throat, he blindly shoved the glasses at her.<\/p>\n
She caught his hands.\u00a0 One gently took the glasses.<\/p>\n
The other curved over his wrist.<\/p>\n
He stared, mesmerized as she slid a hand up his forearm, pausing to scrape her nail along one of the chainlinks he\u2019d inked onto his skin over the years. His skin burned under her touch.\u00a0 Walk away\u2026walk\u2026<\/em><\/p>\nOnly he didn\u2019t know if he could.\u00a0 Not now.\u00a0 He would lose all self respect in the morning, but he had so little left anyway, what did it matter?\u00a0 It would kill something inside him, but there wasn\u2019t anything there worth saving.<\/p>\n
