Nothing but the desperation of a man staring down the business end of a gun. Guy knew that well enough.\u00a0 But all of this added up to yet another scar on the Bell family and they already had enough.\u00a0 And Chris . . .<\/p>\n

The door slammed shut behind him.<\/p>\n

He had to fight not to flinch.<\/p>\n

Of course she was here.\u00a0 After the night they\u2019d spent, after everything she\u2019d been dealing with, how could he not expect her to come looking for him?<\/p>\n

She always came to him.\u00a0 It was something that he both needed and hated, because he needed her, more than he needed to breathe, it seemed.\u00a0 But she didn\u2019t want the things from him that he wanted from her.<\/p>\n

She wanted comfort, wanted silence. Wanted a million things, and he just wanted her.<\/p>\n

Feeling the weight of her gaze, he turned to face her, leaning against the counter behind him, his hands curling around it so he didn\u2019t give in to the temptation to reach for her as she came even closer to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat in the hell are you doing?\u201d she demanded.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaking some personal time,\u201d he said levelly.<\/p>\n

It had been his idea to take a few days away from work. Piss-poor timing, he knew, but the sheriff hadn\u2019t been able to deny it made sense.\u00a0 Fifteen years ago, Guy had been tangentially involved in what was likely going to be a manslaughter case.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t need him around right then.<\/p>\n

He<\/em> didn\u2019t need to be around right then.<\/p>\n

If he could cut the ties that bound him to Chris, he\u2019d just leave Madison altogether.\u00a0 She was the only thing that really held him here, but those ties were strong, forged of iron and lust and love and need.\u00a0 To cut those ties, he\u2019d have to cut out his heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cPersonal time.\u201d\u00a0 She continued to stare at him, her eyes glinting, sharp and brittle.\u00a0 \u201cWhat did you do? Roll out of my bed and just decide you needed a few days away? Just like that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, I\u2019d put the request in the day before the memorial.\u201d \u00a0Setting his jaw, he looked at the wall past her.\u00a0 \u201cI should have mentioned it before that.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t exactly the best time for me to be around, Chris.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot the best time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The wooden tone of her voice was so unnatural, he couldn\u2019t help but look at her and the shattered expression on her face ripped at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAw, fuck,\u201d he muttered, shoving away from the counter.\u00a0 \u201cChris, that isn\u2019t what I . . .\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 She shook her head, her throat working as she swallowed.\u00a0 Vivid bursts of ink, those sexy, insane bursts of color that bloomed on her flesh moving as her chest shuddered, a ragged breath easing out of her.\u00a0 \u201cFifteen years, I waited for answers.\u00a0 Now I have some of them, and the person I always turn to just up and leaves.\u201d<\/p>\n

He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u00a0 Fine.\u00a0 I get this is hell on you, too.\u00a0 I thought maybe we could help each other through it.\u00a0 But you don\u2019t want that.\u00a0 I\u2019ll see you around.\u201d\u00a0 She turned and headed for the door.<\/p>\n

She was two feet from the door when the threads of his control broke.\u00a0 Slamming a hand over her head, he shoved the door closed as she went to slip outside.\u00a0 When she attempted to jerk it open, he simply outmuscled her.<\/p>\n

When she spun around and glared up at him, he glared back. \u201cYou get that this is hell on me,\u201d he said, echoing her words.\u00a0 \u201cYou have no idea<\/em> what kind of hell this is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her lip quivered, a snarl forming on her face.\u00a0 \u201cPoor Guy.\u201d She gave him a look of mock pity and reached up to pat his cheek.<\/p>\n

He caught her wrist, pinned it to the door.<\/p>\n
