In response, Chris just sighed and turned her head away from him, burrowing deeper into the seat.<\/p>\n

Deputy Guy Miller closed his eyes and tried to mentally prepare himself.<\/p>\n

He could do this.<\/p>\n

He had done it before, after all.<\/p>\n

Blowing out a breath, he reached over and unerringly freed the catch on the seat belt. As he climbed out of the car and circled around, he braced himself.\u00a0 Chris was tired. Chris hadn\u2019t just had a rough day<\/em>\u2014the past few weeks had been hell and he needed to be there for her.<\/p>\n

All he was doing was taking her inside, putting her to bed.<\/p>\n

Just being friendly.<\/p>\n

Yeah, because that was how she wanted things.<\/p>\n

That was how she\u2019d decided things would be between them, just a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n

Friendly.\u00a0 That was exactly <\/em>how he felt.\u00a0 Friendly.<\/p>\n

Lust and love twisted inside him.\u00a0 Just lifting her into his arms made his dick ache.\u00a0 Of course, he\u2019d been a fucking disaster all day, ever since he\u2019d slid onto that hard bench at church, seen the red dress she\u2019d worn.\u00a0 No black for Chris.\u00a0 Her mother had loved color, so Chris had given her color.\u00a0 A brilliant spray of red roses and white lilies had stood between two of the pictures and he already knew who had designed that arrangement, and Chris had worn a dress the same shade of red as those roses, a deep, dark red that had glowed against her skin and she\u2019d left her arms bare so the tattoos had been on display.<\/p>\n

More roses.<\/p>\n

Roses that climbed up her arms and trailed down her back.<\/p>\n

Once, he\u2019d stripped that delicate body naked and learned each curve, each bloom of ink, and tasted that soft flesh.<\/p>\n

One weekend, frozen in time.<\/p>\n

But now, he was just a friend.<\/p>\n

Settling her against his chest, he paused, gave himself a minute to rub his cheek against the softness of her hair.<\/p>\n

Just a friend, maybe.<\/p>\n

Even if everything he felt inside was so much more.<\/p>\n

\u201cChris, baby,\u201d he murmured.<\/p>\n

She hummed in her throat and snuggled against him.<\/p>\n

Sighing, he shifted around and managed to kick the door to his car shut.\u00a0 He relished the soft feel of her in his arms as he carried her to the back door, using his key to unlock the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re good at this.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stilled at the sound of her voice.<\/p>\n

A low beep beep beep<\/em> came to his ears and he scowled, moving inside and using his shoulder to bump her door shut.\u00a0 The alarm system he\u2019d nagged her into buying had a key fob, but he\u2019d forgotten about it. Disarming the alarm, he looked down at the pale circle of her face.\u00a0 \u201cHow long have you been awake?\u201d he asked softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomewhere between the car and here.\u201d\u00a0 She wiggled against him but he pretended not to notice as he carried her into the kitchen.<\/p>\n

If she was awake, he was going to make sure she ate something before he left.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you back on the medicine?\u201d he asked, settling her on one of the bar stools.<\/p>\n

She grimaced at him.\u00a0 \u201cNo.\u00a0 I don\u2019t need it right now.\u00a0 Well, maybe it would be useful, but I don\u2019t want it.\u00a0 Why?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you\u2019re not eating.\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019d lost probably five pounds, easy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never eat when I\u2019m miserable.\u201d\u00a0 She sighed and shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cThe ADHD drugs aren\u2019t the only thing that kills my appetite.\u00a0 Finding out what happened to Mom.\u00a0 The memorial.\u00a0 Nosy bitches who don\u2019t need to be at Mom\u2019s memorial anyway.\u00a0 All of those<\/em> things will make me not want to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re going to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n

She slid him a look.\u00a0 \u201cAm I now?\u201d<\/p>\n

He came back over to the island and planted one hand in front of her, the other on the back of her chair.\u00a0 \u201cYou are.\u00a0 You\u2019re wasting away.\u201d\u00a0 Then, because he knew she might ignore him if he bossed her around, but she\u2019d never ignore him if he asked, he softened his voice and said, \u201cPlease, Tink.\u201d<\/p>\n

She sighed.<\/p>\n

Reaching up, he cupped her cheek, wished he had the right to stroke his thumb over the full curve of her lower lip, maybe press his lips to hers and see if he couldn\u2019t find some way to stir her appetite and make her forget some of her misery for a while.<\/p>\n

She covered his hand with hers and squeezed.\u00a0 \u201cYou need a wife, Guy.\u00a0 You just love taking care of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot all wives want to be taken care of.\u201d\u00a0 He shrugged and turned away.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t about to tell her that the only woman he wanted to take care of was her, that the only woman he wanted was the woman he\u2019d never have.<\/p>\n

Just a few more days…have you ordered?<\/em><\/p>\n
