So… did you meet Tate from BURN FOR ME?<\/p>\n

It’s time to meet Dean…and Jensen, Tate’s younger sister.<\/p>\n

\"Break-for-Me-by-Shiloh-Walker225x340\"<\/a><\/p>\n

That attitude of hers shouldn\u2019t be so appealing.<\/p>\n

He understood the need for the attitude\u2014he\u2019d learned young to cover his, though. Cover the attitude, cover the teeth, all until he had reason otherwise. Jensen had either never learned to hide that attitude, or she just didn\u2019t see the point and as he came to a stop next to her, she all but snarled at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t even have a chance to figure out what to say\u2014a problem with her, because looking into her eyes had a habit of leaving him temporarily dumbstruck. It only lasted a second or two\u2014his mother had a habit of teasing him that she\u2019d know he was serious about a woman when he found the one that made him shut his mouth for more than two seconds, and that woman, apparently, was Jensen.<\/p>\n

But those two seconds were two seconds too long because a man he thoroughly disliked decided to make his presence known.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, if it was me<\/i>,\u201d Detective Jeb Sims said, edging his way into the knot of people, one hand gripping a cup of coffee while the other rested on the butt of his weapon.\u00a0 He constantly seemed to be touching it.\u00a0 \u201cI would have gone for the bigger problem anyway, Bell.\u00a0 Pruitt is a pimple on society\u2019s ass, but you shoulda known he wasn\u2019t going to do much time.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a big bust or anything.\u00a0 Don\u2019t go getting your panties in a twist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dean tensed, something ugly building in his throat.<\/p>\n

Jensen\u2019s eyes went tight around the corners, something so minute, gone in a blink.\u00a0 She turned her head, the sleek fall of her hair shielding her face from him as she looked at Sims.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you see, that\u2019s the difference between you and me, I guess, Jeb,\u201d she drawled, her voice cool and lazy, like she didn\u2019t give a damn about anything Sims had to say.\u00a0 \u201cYou see, I was focusing on the man, the meth lab, the laws . . . and the safety of his family.\u00a0 I\u2019m a cop, you see.\u00a0 To serve and protect. The size of the bust wasn\u2019t the issue.\u00a0 The safety of that kid and his mama were my number one concern.\u201d\u00a0 She shrugged and looked away. \u201cAnd don\u2019t get too concerned about my panties, either.\u00a0 I\u2019ll take care of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just think\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you need to not worry about Bell\u2019s cases,\u201d Sorenson said, his voice mild.\u00a0 The look in his eyes was anything but.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t you have some of your own to deal with anyway, detective?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeb\u2019s face went a slow, ugly shade of red, but he pasted a wide smile on his face.\u00a0 \u201cThat, I do.\u00a0 Sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

He ignored Dean completely.<\/p>\n

After Sims moved out of the area, Dean tried to catch her eye but she looked directly at the chief.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m done for the day.\u00a0 You have a nice night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did good work today,\u201d Sorenson said.<\/p>\n

She nodded at him, tried to avoid looking at Dean.<\/p>\n

You are not just going to completely ignore me<\/i>. He moved to intercept her.<\/p>\n

Her mouth flattened out.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve got a minute, detective?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, I\u2019m afraid I don\u2019t have many of them.\u00a0 I need to wrap things up for the day.\u00a0 I\u2019m meeting my family in a bit.\u201d She edged around him, moving to her desk with fast, easy strides.<\/p>\n

He doubted he was the only one who noticed the looks the two of them got\u2014not that anybody made any effort to hide them.\u00a0 Nosy fools.\u00a0 Ignoring the cops loitering in the area, he waited by her desk as she collected some files, moved them into her bag.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt won\u2019t take but a minute.\u00a0 I\u2019ll just walk you to your car.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something flashed in her eyes, but she gave him a tight smile and strode past him.<\/p>\n

He matched her quick strides easily.\u00a0 She moved damned fast, he\u2019d give her that.\u00a0 Five foot two, he\u2019d bet, and she moved like the entire world was an obstacle course she had to conquer and she only had a finite amount of time to do it.\u00a0 They hit the doors and he paused to see which way she\u2019d go.<\/p>\n

They were outside in the brilliant light of the summer sun in a moment and he fell into step beside her as she headed down the street.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou made a clean arrest.\u201d<\/p>\n

A withering look came across her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m well aware of that, Mr. West.\u00a0 But thanks for the seal of approval.\u00a0 It means the world to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ouch<\/i>.\u00a0 She had a bite to her.\u00a0 Another thing he found all too appealing about her.<\/p>\n

There was very little about her he didn\u2019t <\/i>find appealing.\u00a0 That just served to make moments like this harder.<\/p>\n
